RR -- Free for All!

  • Aug. 4th, 2008 at 8:43 AM
Epic Recs is now being watched by over 300 people!  To celebrate, some of our reccers are going to be posting a bonus rec today.  In addition, we were hoping ya'll would tell us about some of your favorite stories, especially stories that have not fit into any of our previous reader's rec themes.  That's right, anything goes!  Make us proud:)

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to).  All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

A Good Read by Alyjude (NC-17)

Title: A Good Read
Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Categories: angst
Length: medium
Warnings: n/a

Author on LJ: [personal profile] alyburns
Author Website: http://www.skeeter63.org/~k9kennel/Alyjude.htm

Review:
The story opens with a diary entry. A really crushing diary entry that details just what life has been like for Blair Sandburg after the series finale. An ulcer is referred to several times. Not to mention a *lot* of anger. And, because this is Blair, we go from the diary entry to the day of Blair's graduation (if, you know, he were actually being allowed to graduate). Is it any surprise that a madman with a bomb is involved?

As you all know, Alyjude is one of my Sentinel fandom guilty pleasure authors. This story, however, is not a guilty pleasure. It's just plain good, especially with the characterization of kick!ass!Blair, who not only doesn't need saving, but he damn well will save everyone else while he's at it. Toss in a fantastic journal entry, Jim being, uh, Jim, and Simon being completely awesome and you have a great story all around.

A Good Read (pt. 1) (pt. 2)

I knew that I wanted to do a smaller fandom for my bonus rec and had even considered doing a truly tiny fandom (T3), but I've decided to save that one in case we ever have another Tiny Fandom Week. Instead, I present one of those DH4 recs I've been promising you...

Review:
The funny thing about a fire sale is that the effects of it don't just go away overnight. Especially with the power grid in shambles. After the movie, Matt (really having nowhere else to go) moves in to John's guest room and starts trying to put his life back together. Meanwhile, John adapts to having someone in his life again and tries to get himself ready for the inevitable loneliness when Matt leaves.

There are so many things I like about this fic, it's hard to decide where to start. How about the realism for one? Most DH4 fics work under the assumption that as soon as Gabriel is gone, NYC returns to the state it was before the fire sale. While I don't mind the assumption, it really isn't very plausible. The damage Gabriel wrought is a long lasting one, especially in a city that runs on electricity, a resource that wouldn't be available immediately with a hub of the power grid gone and wouldn't be reliable until that hub is rebuilt. That Guy deals with the long-term ramifications of Gabriel's actions, and it is fascinating.

Also fascinating is how John and Matt both grow over the course of the story. Matt, especially, faces a lot of fears about his place in a world where electricity (and thus his computer) is no longer something he can count on. John faces the solitude he's lived with for so long that he's forgotten how much he *doesn't* enjoy it. Their relationship develops slowly and realistically and by the end you want to breathe 'finally' but at the same time recognize that it wouldn't have as much meaning if it hadn't taken so damn long. A wonderful, brilliant story of rebuilding and growth.

I've returned and brought with me a bonus rec to celebrate our 300th watcher.

Title: Sarah's Story.
Fandom: Pride and Prejudice.
Pairing: Elizabeth Bennet/Fitzwilliam Darcy.

Review:
Following tradition, Sarah Hill (the Bennet girls' lady's maid) accompanies the newly married Mrs Darcy to Pemberley and chronicles the changes that the marriage brings to both their lives.

This story is a favorite through the fandom and there are plenty of good reasons for that: the narrator, a truly engaging OC (and how often do you get to say that?); the beautifully portrayed relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy; a perfect balance between the harsh realities of life and the strenght of love and loyalty. Well-written, original and moving, it is indeed a great fic.

The Spaces Inside by Lavvyan (NC-17)

Title: The Spaces Inside
Fandom: SGA
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Category: AU, angst, drama
Length: medium
Warnings: BDSM

Author on LJ: [personal profile] lavvyan
Author's website: http://lavvyan.jerah.com.au/

Author's Summary:
John didn't know when he had started to look forward to their encounters. He only knew that somehow, they had become the highlights of his week.

Review:
This story is set in the general universe of Xanthe's "Coming Home" and "General and Dr. Sheppard", where BDSM relationships are the norm (and no one bats an eye when people get collared). In fact, quite a few authors have written stories in the 'BDSM-verse', and I'll probably have more recs on this topic.

John picks up Rodney, a stray sub, and they begin a no-strings-attached relationship until John realizes he is getting too attached. Some may consider John and Rodney are out-of-character in this story. Indeed, they are, but that's because they've had entirely differently life experiences than the John and Rodney of Atlantis. But John is still John, complete with his inherent sense to save everyone (and that's sort of why he picked up Rodney from the street in the first place). And Rodney is...well, still a genius. While Lavvyan gave us a very submissive Rodney, it is refreshing to see a Rodney that doesn't talk 5 miles a minute (though he does return to a Rodney we're more familiar with towards the end).

There is not much power dynamics in the story and the BDSM is almost completely restricted to sex. It's really a rather sweet story. I think even people not into BDSM would enjoy this one.
