It's my birthday, and I'm turning 24 - and while I know that everyone's busy for the holidays, I hope that y'all are willing to share some of your favorites with me!

Today's Topic: Trace By Echo's Birthday

Stuff I would love to read, if you have it to share:

Any length fic - so long as it's awesome, I don't care if it's ten words long. :) Fanart and vids are great too.

Fandoms: I love Axis Powers Hetalia, Jane Austen books, Horatio Hornblower, Firefly, Due South, Jeeves & Wooster, One Piece, Vorkosigan Saga, Discworld, Good Omens... and any fandom you feel moved to rec. I won't turn down a good rec!

What pushes my buttons:
1) rare &/or non-canon pairings (I may actually not like more than a handful of canon pairings in the history of ever, seriously);
2) slash, het, gen and the rarest of all, asexual romances (because asexuals can fall in love too, okay?);
3) time/dimension travel done well; and
4) fix-it fics for those moments of canon screw-ups.

Not really looking for: gore, unhappy endings, or anything we'd warn for in the community. I'm a humor and happy endings fan at heart.

I'm not really expecting any recs at such a busy time, so anything you'd care to share would make me very happy. (Also, very grateful.) This has been a wonderful community to rec for, and I'm looking forward to continuing reccing in 2010!

You've probably seen My Man Jeeves (http://www.slashfic.co.uk/JEEVES.htm) since it's been around for ever. If you'd like to try something a bit more bizarre - and rare into the bargain - have a look at Arch (http://www.slashfic.co.uk/page2.html#toolr), a series of slash stories based on the film 'Still Crazy' (featuring Bill Nighy and Jimmy Nail). There's also a three-part time-travel saga, 'Things To Do In Belgium When You're Dead', centred on the same characters.

Hey, thanks! I can't remember if I've read My Man Jeeves, but it does sound familiar. I'll have to look up "Still Crazy", for sure. :)

I'm not sure if it counts as asexual romance but Chicago has a lovely romance between a semi-asexual J'onn and Batman(I say semi because J'onn can shapeshift).
It's an epic fic series that spans the first five years of J'onn and Batman's relationship including how they got together.

Thanks - I honestly didn't expect anyone to find even a semi-asexual romance, so extra thanks! I'll have to go try that series out!

Well, I jumped on the link like a jumping thing and I'm enjoying the stories considerably!

Happy ending recs.
If you dont mind bandom forever now (http://passe-simple.livejournal.com/8523.html) is easily one of the best happy-ending stories I can rec. Its Looong!

If you want something more slashy/porny in the genre, and shorter, since the above is essentially kid!fic, gulls (http://bebunny.livejournal.com/585.html) is my pirate bandom AU.

Thanks for the recs! I haven't tried bandom before, but there's a first time for everything - and if you think they're good fics, then at least I'll be starting off right!

Re: Happy ending recs.
Forever Now always puts hearts in my eyes. It's pretty much the cutest thing ever.

Like the Tide is another super sweet angsty fluffy bandom piece. It's an AU (the better to not confuse you with various band history references) and deals with orphans and the foster care system. No super-serious abuse, just some kids with trust issues and wonderfully understanding second families. It's by ArsenicJade and Untappedbeauty.

IIRC there is a pretty long WIP in SGA where John is asexual, but tries to have a relationship with Rodney anyway. I haven't found it yet.

I remember one where it's a SGA team-hookup and they all understand how John's asexual. It was great, and I'm so frustrated that I can't find it again.

BTW, maybe the fic you're thinking of is Lavvyan's Home Shopping AU? John isn't entirely asexual, just mostly, and with an additional childhood trauma re: people touching him.

Oh, I had forgotten about that! I love that story. The mere idea of a home shopping Au! Haha! The thing is, my memory on this is so vague, it might be this one, or it might even be completely invented. It's entirely possible that I'm just retroactivly injecting the Home Shopping asexuality issue into some other story. Actually, I just realized that some of what I remember comes from Enthrall by Leah and Springwoof. Too much fic!! But that's SGA for you.

If I may be tacky for a moment...
I'll just add one of my fics to your list because it has a very unusual pairing. And it's due South.

Through the Looking Glass (http://tres-mechante.livejournal.com/144544.html) is RayK/Fraser, and RayK/human!Dief. It was written for the first-ever [livejournal.com profile] kink_bigbang.

It's 30,850 words, and rated Mature. It has supernatural elements, slash, creepy moment, humour and a happy ending. There is a complete list of warnings (enticements?) in the header.

Summary: Ray’s life has taken a turn for the strange, what with a gruesome murder, creepy witnesses, the woodland version of Hotel California, and a squirrel with attitude. But then along comes some guy claiming to be Diefenbaker and that's when things get weird.

If you're feeling the need for something a bit crackish, you are cordially invited to drop by.

Oh, and happy birthday!

Re: If I may be tacky for a moment...
Oh, that *does* sound interesting (RayK/Human!Dief for the win). Thanks for the rec! I'll give it a try once the term's done. Or this weekend, if my resolve is weak. :)

You want a rare pairing? You read Due South?
I've got two: Frannie & Turnbull, and for slash Dewey & Turnbull. Yeah. You read that one right. There's no sex in either one...exactly. But I'm pretty proud of both of them.
It Was a Very Good Year (http://www.chezshay.net/stories/Verygood.html)
The Man Who Wasn't There (http://www.chezshay.net/stories/Manwho.html).
Hope you enjoy!

Vorkosigan, you say?
Well... maybe not an 'awesome' fic, but cute and funny it is. A Firefly/Vorkosigan crossover short story. Gen, humor.
Creeping Ambition (http://altogetherelsewhere.net/multiverse/creepingambition.html) by Mara Greengrass
Summary: Ivan Vorpatril and the crew of Firefly. Oh dear.

Happy Birthday Trace by Echo!
I come bearing prezzies and lots of good wishes! (deleted the first time for a hilariously stupid spelling error)

Title: Death and the Definitely-Not-A-Maiden (http://community.livejournal.com/dw_cross/18125.html)
Fandoms: Dr Who /Torchwood and Discworld
Characters: Jack Harkness, Death, Susan Sto Helit, Ianto Jones
Categories: Crossover, Gen, Humor
Rating: PG
Length: ~3,700
Summary: “The first time Jack died, he had enough time to look round confusedly, see the figure in black and go “Wha-” before he was gasping back to life. Jack being Jack, there was also only so long that he could ignore the fact that he was being stalked by a tall dark stranger with a large (agricultural) implement. So Jack, being Jack, started low grade flirting. Persistence generally paid off.”

Why you chose this: This is unique, droll, has time travel, a bit of an asexual romance and a happy ending! It’s even seasonal. Hope you enjoy it!
I posted gorgeous art for “Pride and Prejudice” here. Hint – it’s not a canon pairing! (http://community.livejournal.com/epic_recs/247425.html?thread=1022337#t1022337)
There are two rec lists for Firefly at the Holiday Recathon 2008 (http://wizefics.livejournal.com/192379.html) and Holiday Recathon 2009. (http://wizefics.livejournal.com/296048.html)

Re: Happy Birthday Trace by Echo!
Jesus, I hadn't ever thought of pairing up Torchwood and Discworld, but yeah, if you go the Death angle it's perfect! I'll give this one a try post-exam paper. :) Or earlier, if my resolve is weak.

The artwork sounds great too - let me zip on over and look at it now. :)

Um, One More?
A Glee/Supernatural crossover. A short crack fic.

The Knuckles of Skinnybone Tree

Is the name of Supernatural time travel fic. It's really well done with an appropriate amount of angst, but alas it's slash, and wincest. So I don't know if you'd be interested. I found it originally on Spnstoryfinders. -SB

Hmm, does it require much knowledge of canon? I only know a little about SPN, and while the bones of the canon sounded good, some of the details weren't to my taste. Time travel, though... I'll give it a try! Thanks for the rec! BTW, incest is totally not a problem for me unless they want to or have kids together, which is not really a problem with brothers, or it's noncon/dubcon.

Hmm, the only thing you really need to know is that John Winchester is their father, and he dies in season 2 or three. Sam and Dean are the main characters, and their dad raised them to be hunters (of supernatural beasties), John was a hard man to know. They lost their mom to a demon, disguised as a house fire, when Sam was six months old, and Dean was four. Now you know everything you need to enjoy the story. I wish I could provide a link, but I can't find the sucker, rolls eyes. I have a copy of the story though if it doesn't come up on a search for you. Happy Birthday. -SB

The fics are too many to choose from so instead of reccing my faves, I'm going to rec: The Newbie's Guide to what to read in Generation Kill fandom (http://alethialia.livejournal.com/416014.html)

It's epic. Most of them I've read and loved but here are some of my favorites (which are linked there):

Semper Fidelis Familia
After That
Get Some
Umoja
They Set Their Hearts Upon You

Half of them are set during or post-Iraq but the other half is awesomely AU. Semper FF is mafia!AU, Get Some is HS!AU while one of my faves is They Set Their Hearts Upon You is a Model!AU where most of them are well, models and it's fabulous. I finished the story and I realized that I knew most of the real people - designer, models, etc -- and only about 5% I didn't, and even when I looked them up, I've seem their faces or their collection.

Hey, no worries! Especially since I didn't have any zombie!fic to offer you... wait. Actually, I do. *Is embarrassed for not thinking of them sooner* Two Axis Powers: Hetalia fics. Here:

Apocalypse When, by Wizzard890: http://wizzard890.livejournal.com/45852.html#cutid1

Kill All Sons of Bitches, by Pyrrhiccomedy: http://pyrrhiccomedy.livejournal.com/24792.html#cutid1

They're both short, and more on the humorous side of the scale (although Wizzard's is certainly more serious).
