It's my party I can...rec...if I want to

  • Dec. 8th, 2009 at 7:09 PM
It's my birthday (I've been turning 19 for the last while now) and I figure it's a good chance for all of you (YES, YOU, readers!) to show me what you've got stashed away on your harddrive. And really, recs would make my really, really, deliriously happy and post more recs of my own, which is simply to everyone's benefit.

Enough said, so, what really pushes my bottons (other than slash and unconventional het):

-Podfics (I just got a new iPod for my birthday and am in the process of collecting podfics!)

-Zombie fics (Collecting zombie fics is one of my pet projects. Any fandom, any pairing, including gen.)

-Epics (from any small fandom or a rare-pairing from any fandom; I'm always on the lookout for new things to read!)

Today's Topic: Mei's Birthday

I was actually just about to rec the podfic of etherati's zombie-verse fic, which is available here (http://etherati.livejournal.com/18126.html). etherati's writing is gorgeous -- lyrical and atmospheric and she takes something that ought to be a total crackfic premise and turns it into a tense, creepy, and beautiful piece of psychological drama crossed with a post-apocalyptic survival story. With bonus slashiness.

Astolat's House of the Living is an amazing zombie!fic. AI8, Kris/Adam, lots of death including that of top 10'ers. I think it's one of the top recced AI fics out there right now, and it's a serious take on the zombie/plague thing. 17k, so it's epic in both quantity and quality.

Happy Birthday!

Heroes has loads of great zombie fic.

The Zombie Diaries (http://squills.livejournal.com/12231.html) is crack, but it's amazing crack.

Apocalypse (http://biggerbeans.livejournal.com/tag/zombie) is an EPIC zombie fic about the House of M (and zombies, natch).

Infestation (http://barhaven.livejournal.com/313394.html) is one of my favorite Heroes fics. It's not technically about zombies, but it is monster fic (it's supposed to be like Cloverfield, but I understood this without ever having seen that movie). So good!

Coffee Stains and Teacups (http://eonism.livejournal.com/tag/coffee+stains+and+teacups) isn't zombie fic, but it might fulfill your request for rare-pair epics; it's a Peter/Mohinder multi-chapter story (read the bottom post first and work your way up) that I find to be really sweet and kind of realistic. I love it. The only thing that's wrong with it is that it is unfinished. However, I was fine with the way the last installment went; you achieve a happy ending even though it was meant to go on a bit more.

And for another long rare-pair (~10K words) And I am full of squee for a fic that came out today. Am I allowed to rec something that was written for me as a gift? It's a Heroes/Lost (http://community.livejournal.com/xover_exchange/10475.html) crossover, but it's set 100 years before Lost, so if you've never seen Lost, it's actually still completely understandable, because you get introduced to the island through Adam's equally clueless eyes. It's Adam/Richard (a Lost character). And it's wonderful, if you like Adam's character. It's a shipwreck adventure with immortals! It's fantastic!

You know of General JinJur's site, right? The most impressive podfic I've found there yet was "Written By the Victors".

And my favorite rare fandom author is probably Dorinda. Her website is http://thechicagoloop.net/dorinda/
And everything there is wonderful. My personal favorite is her "The Sting" story.

Thanks! I've absolutely LOVED your Henry V story *SQUEE*. Just one question though: how common was "brother-making"? A friend of mine of Greek Orthodox background told me the orthodox church used to perform that ceremony way back when, but he wasn't sure it was all that common.

Just one question though: how common was "brother-making"?

Well, that opens up a whole can of worms; there's considerable academic argument over that very point. It does seem to have been quite in favour immediately after the The Black Death, however, as a way of legally combining families which would have struggled to survive otherwise - two men who had lost their wives, for example, could be brothered in order to give their children a stable home with two parents. There's an excellent book on the subject listed in my notes for the story.

My feeling is, if the ritual existed and was still in use occasionally - which it did and was - there was nothing to stop it being appropriated by gay men as a commitment ceremony, if they thought they could get away with it!
[identity profile] meishali.livejournal.com wrote:

According to my very reliable Greek Orthodox source (;p), the Greek Church has eliminated this rite a while back. Apparently, it was used by the Greeks mostly to combine two properties legally for financially and politically. And since Greek women couldn't hold property, the union was made between two men. What I found odd was that unmarried or married men could be joined by "brother-making", yet once you are joined, neither was allowed to marry a woman.

I highly recommend Master and Commander and Zombies b< [livejournal.com profile] the_elb. It is, as the title says, written in the MandC fandom, also known as Aubreyad (20 1/2 books and a movie), was originally written bit by bit for the Aubreyad Kink Meme (http://community.livejournal.com/perfect_duet/305693.html?thread=3349021#t3349021), and a complete version is up here (http://hieroglyfics.net/misc/zombreyad.htm). About 11.000 words, PG-13, slash goggles optional if I remember correctly (too distracted by the zombies and everybody almost dying), had all of us desperately waiting for more after each update. Elb is an incredible writer, if not for the zombies this could very well be part of the books themselves, the story is gripping and, once it's got you,doesn't let go again. *uses appropriate panicky icon*

I'm also a big zombie fan! So, here are some recs I don't think have been listed yet:

zombies will never hurt you (yeah right) (http://kelene.livejournal.com/101928.html)
{Merlin - Merlin/Arthur}
(2,033 words) Modern AU. "In which the zombie apocalypse wreaks havoc on Arthur's personal hygiene, and he's just really not happy about that."

Left 4 Dead - G-Kill Edition (http://alhazred.livejournal.com/60055.html)
{Generation Kill - Brad/Nate}
(12,000 words) Author writes good action. Ray, Nate, and Brad fighting off the zombie apocalypse + a bit of Brad pining and Ray & Brad BFFness. Set post-Iraq.

and if I need a rhythm (http://cathybites.livejournal.com/656177.html) by cathybites
{Supernatural - Sam/Dean, incest duh}
(2,900 words) Making out and zombies?

Better Fate Than Wisdom (http://nightanddaze.livejournal.com/108530.html)
[Torchwood - Jack/Ianto]
(1,014 words) "The two-year anniversary of the world that ended on Valentine's Day." Zombies for Valentines Day? Oh, Torchwood.

All in a Day's Work (http://community.livejournal.com/tw_flashfic/42114.html)
[Torchwood, Jack/Ianto]
1,550 words. A day in the life of Torchwood, with zombies. Early S2.

They Came to Norway to Eat Our Brains (http://community.livejournal.com/available_very/42253.html)
(Torchwood/Doctor Who, Rose/Jack)
(5,000 words) Torchwood in The Alternate Universe has a zombie problem on their hands, when Rose runs into Jack.

Baron Saturday Visits Cardiff (http://thaddeusfavour.livejournal.com/19236.html)
(Torchwood; Team!fic + established Jack/Ianto)
45,283 words. Technically a sequel to "Tea, Torchwood Blend", but stands alone. "Something's gone wrong with Jack and now the living undead are walking the streets of Cardiff. How did this happen? How will the Torchwood Three team handle it? Will Owen join the ranks of the zombie forces or find a new reason for living? All this, and more!" A fun team!fic + Andy with plenty of Jack/Ianto on the side. (Also tiny crossover with the Buffyverse)

12 Hours (http://www.thetenthmuse1.madbrilliant.com/ncis/standalones/12hours.htm)
[NCIS/CSI; Action/Adventure, some Tony/Gibbs]
(19,000 words)"A deadly virus is unleashed on DC and spreads to the surrounding states with mayhem and death resulting." I read this for the zombies! whee!
[warning 1: non-Tony/Gibbs supporting character deaths]
[warning 2: calls Gerald 'the black man' a whole lot, which, well, he is... but it started weirding me out.]

rare pairing long fics part 1
The Dah-Ling Store-It-Yourself (http://community.livejournal.com/nixa_jane/84119.html)
{Psych - Shawn/Lassiter}
(43,200 words) One of Lassiter's highest profile arrests has just escaped from prison and kidnapped an obsessively sleep-deprived Shawn, who is just about the worst hostage ever. Very satisfying! I loved this. Feels just a like a great episode, plus a dash of slash. Cyril looked down at the phone. “What the hell is H and K?” “Hugs and Kisses,” Shawn explained, unabashedly. “You're sending hugs and kisses to Lassiter?” Cyril asked, disbelievingly. “He's a big softy, really,” Shawn said. “Those little signs of affection are good for him. It makes him feel appreciated.” Cyril looked a little pale. “Oh my god, are you Lassiter’s boyfriend? Have I kidnapped Lassiter’s boyfriend?” "Not at all, but if it makes you feel better, you're not the first to think we were lovers," Shawn told him primly. "The last guy that kidnapped me thought so too."

Walk This Path of Dust and Ashes (http://tassosss.livejournal.com/106019.html)
{Supernatural/Jericho - gen} *rare due to Jericho
(47,600 words) SPN mid-S4/Jericho general Season 1. Well done crossover. Was able to follow along very well after looking up 'Jericho' on Wikipedia. "The day after Ruby drags Castiel out of Hell, twenty-three bombs fall on twenty-three American cities, devastating the country in one fell swoop. Resources are suddenly in short supply, small emergencies turn into disasters, and outside of the town of Jericho's borders, it's every man for himself. As the town struggles to set up a defense force against road gangs amid domestic unrest, four refugees walk in from the fallout zone in the West."

Combustion (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3647391/1/Combustion)
[Transformers Movie; Bumblebee/Sam]
(51,000 words) "With Megatron defeated and the Decepticons MIA, life begins to settle down for Sam. Except that his relationship with Mikaela isn't working, and maybe that's because things with Bumblebee are going a little too well." Yes, someone actually made car/person sex work. FOR REALS.

The Last Two First Steps (http://jengrrrl.livejournal.com/575773.html)
{Skins - Naomi/Emily}
(18,700 words) Excellent. Feels very canon. Set immediately post-S3. With its working title of Fitch Family Drama, this story follows the aftermath of the Love Ball--the tentative steps Emily and Katie Fitch have to take in order to mend their relationship with each other, with their family, and with Naomi, Emily's girlfriend.

The Last Thing You Say by vega_rin (http://gilmore-fiction.net/viewstory.php?sid=643)
{Gilmore Girls - Rory/Dean}
(41,500 words) That het pairing almost no one fics. Season 2 era. "Self-imposed blindness can last only so long. A Dean story."

There's No Replacing You by fourteencandles (http://fourteencandles.livejournal.com/120687.html)
{Entourage - E/OMC}
(26,000 words) "Vince brings a girl home from New York, and she seems... kind of familiar." The one where, yeah, it's basically canon that Vince and E are in love with each other, but it's just not that simple. A damn good story that is honestly exactly how I would imagine it going if Eric discovered he's bisexual. His love interest is great, and Vince is Vince in every honest way. I normally don't get into OCs, but I was totally rooting for Travis/E like crazy.

Here's Us Together by fourteencandles (http://fourteencandles.livejournal.com/tag/here%27s+us+together)
[Entourage, Vince/Eric]
(113,000 words) The Entourage epic of awesomeness. Angst and happy endings, and Vince/Eric from teenagers to out celebrities. Doesn't focus on V/E to exclusion of all else either - complex portrayals of Turtle and Drama.

Made Men by fourteencandles (http://fourteencandles.livejournal.com/114838.html)
[Entourage, Vince/Eric]
(39,000 words) Real relationships are hard. Vince and Eric work at it. Mature, satisfying happy ending. "At Sundance, Vince and Eric decide they should do Tapping the Source with Harvey Weinstein instead of take a risk on Aquaman. How does their life(second half of Season 2 onwards) change because of this decision?"

rare pairing long fics part 2
The Affairs of Wizards by Gehayi (http://theninemuses.net/archive/viewstory.php?sid=212)
[The Dresden Files; Harry/Marcone]
27,000 words. Book!verse. "Post-Small Favor. A desperate John Marcone has a case that only Harry Dresden can solve, and Harry can't, in good conscience, refuse."

Forged Series (http://darktrent182.livejournal.com/23247.html)
[Dresden Files; Harry/Bob]
(144,000 words) TV!verse. The 'Harry has been in love with Bob since he was a teenager' epic. Goes from pre-series to post-series. Unrequited pining until last chapters.

Dea Ex Machina, Dea Sub Iudicio (http://www.skeeter63.org/~allaire/DeaExMachina.html)
[BtVS/Dresden Files - Bob/Harry Dresden, Willow/Kennedy]
(47,000 words) BtVS crossover with the Dresden Files tv verse.

I'm not sure if Generation Kill is still considered to be a small fandom... but in my opinion it is, and it has some great fics…

Sixteen Days in September by tevere (http://tevere.dreamwidth.org/32421.html)
{Generation Kill - Ensemble, Brad/Nate}
(43,500 words) Written in such a way that the reader does not have to have seen the 'Generation Kill" mini-series.
Serious subject matter, but AMAZING. Would rec to everyone! AU. "When Peace Corps assigns Nate to East Timor, a tiny half-island in eastern Indonesia, he figures he'll have a lot of time to catch up on his reading. But the year is 1999, and the shock fall of military dictator Suharto is still reverberating throughout the country, triggering changes nobody ever thought possible. As East Timor moves inexorably towards freedom – or war – Nate is drawn into events that will define the future of the province forever." Excellent historical fiction (as good as published pieces I've enjoyed), painstakingly researched, and written by a current resident of the country.

How to Survive Accurate Mortar Fire (and Other Inconveniences of War) (http://godofwine.livejournal.com/77214.html)
{Generation Kill - Brad/Nate}
(21,000 words) Utterfly fantastic! Beautiful characterization and snapshots of the men before, during, and after Iraq. Just be careful to read the entries from bottom to top on each page.
"Brad knows how to handle a gun, how to handle the gears of his bike, the delicate silicone of his computer. But people, he finds, are fragile, tricky things.”
“Nate thinks: reality is quietly blowing his mind.”

The Road Not Taken by hackthis (http://hackthis.livejournal.com/519672.html)
{Generation Kill - Brad/Nate}
(25,000 words) Generation Kill AU, in which Nate and Brad had a 1 night stand 10 years ago that lead to Nate not joining the Corps and instead becoming a professor. And now thanks to the GI Bill he has a class of ex-Recon Marines, including a rather determined Brad Colbert.

‘Caro’ definitely qualifies as an epic (nearly 80,000 k) and as a rare-pairing from a small fandom:

http://pargoletta.livejournal.com/18685.html

It’s Mercutio/Benvolio, from ‘Romeo and Juliet’.

Pargoletta’s pretty much queen of this fandom. Working from Zefirelli’s film, she’s delved into the back-story of the characters, providing explanations of their psychology and projecting them forward into a slight AU which is firmly grounded in the history and attitudes of the times. The research isn’t intrusive, though; no blizzard of footnotes here! The fic succeeds as a story in its own right as well as a plausible alternate, in-character, portrayal of Renaissance Verona. Highly recommended!

There are quite a few other stories set in the Caroverse, also worth pursuing – including a crossover with ‘The Merchant of Venice’, which among other good points does a nice compare-and-contrast between the two cities. So if you enjoy ‘Caro’ there’ll be plenty to keep you occupied! In fact, I see there’s a new one going up right now... *settles down to read*
