RR -- Readers Are In Charge

  • Dec. 1st, 2009 at 1:14 PM
Epic Recs is officially going on hiatus for a month. (I say officially, because there's still going to be a lot of recs over the next few weeks, mostly alternative media recs.) This means that our Readers Are In Charge! Rec anything you want, as often as you want, with as much detail as you want. If it's remotely fandom related, it goes here!

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one). We are actively seeking new reccers at the moment. If you'd like to be considered, be sure to do a full review similar to the reviews posted on the comm.

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: Anything Goes!

Previous RR topics can be found here.

Short question: Does "anything goes" also include podfics and podvids?

Heh -- new reply (this is what happens when you post two 'anything goes' posts in one day:)

Yes, podfics and podvids are a total go! And you don't even need to wait for their respective RR posts if you don't want to; feel free to post them here.

Thanks for asking!

My theme for today is character death. Here are a couple of very different takes on it:

Title: Accidental Memory In The Case Of Death
Author: derryere
Rating: NC-17
Fandom: Merlin
Pairing: Arthur/Merlin (and other, to be revealed pairing)
Categories: future, angst, au
Length: Epic (>75,000 words)
Warnings: **CHARACTER DEATH** (you have been warned, but there’s still a…um…happy(?) ending)

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] derryere

Summary:

Review:
So I could not possibly do this story justice by giving it a recommendation. Suffice it to say, this is one of the best stories I’ve ever read. It’s certainly the most intelligent story I’ve ever read. The author does fascinating things that leave us with a story that’s more a combination of original fiction crossed with the original Arthurian legend than a Merlin fandom fic. Although you can still see the characters. You can experience them with every word spoken. And just be prepared for this to be a truly Arthur/Merlin fic. There is no other character from the show present in this fic.

Title: Fade to Black
Author: whizbang
Rating: R(?)
Fandom: SGA
Pairing: McKaSy/Sheppard…if you squint
Categories: angst, au, dark, horror, mystery
Length: Long (~25,000)
Warnings: **CHARACTER DEATH** (you have been warned, again, and this time no happy ending—this is dark, be prepared)

Summary:

Review:
This is a companion piece to whizbang’s Black Helicopters Series (http://whizzy.livejournal.com/617937.html) which includes two epic-length stories already (with at least one more to come). But to get back to the point, the author thought of this first, then ended up writing the Black Helicopter Series instead. And then, for this Halloween she thrilled us all with this beautifully dark Fade to Black.

I’m not always fond of dark fiction. It can be quite trite, or really badly written. This is exactly the opposite. The author’s choice to use the characters from Black Helicopters at Dawn in a sort of ‘what could have been’ spin-off was a fantastic choice. Also, the OC’s in this fic are from a simply fantastic movie, called Arsenic and Old Lace. The thought of Abby and Mortimer living as the same world as any Rodney whatsoever just gives me a happy. And there are a few allusions to the movie itself in the story that just give me that tickled pink feeling.

Well of course. Although the first is probably up your ally. Quite angsty. And neither of our boys is exactly dead in the end.

Re: ha
...define not exactly dead. Are they on the same plane? Able to interact? Cause I could totally live with that:)

reincarnated...in present day England...and the story is mostly about these reincarnations. The two of them have to come to terms with memories they suddenly have about a life they never lived, and yet did at the same time...very good, but a little sad in places.

Oh, and they are living in the same town, and I'm pretty sure meeting each other brought the memories out in the open.

The Bright Lights of Disturbia, by Leonidaslion (NC-17)
Title: The Bright Lights of Disturbia
Fandom: Supernatural
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Categories: Angst, Drama, Hurt/Comfort
Length: Epic (370,840 words)
Warnings: multiple rape/non-con scenes (with a side of familial molestation), dub-con, family dysfunction, violence, references to attempted suicide

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] leonidaslion
Website: [livejournal.com profile] leonidasden

Author's Summary: Not all our scars are worn on the outside...
Review:
In this AU of S1, Sam learns about Dean's short career in gay porn, and that Azazel's plans for him includes a particularly nasty fate for Dean.
This is epic in every sense of the word- epic in length, epic in scale, epic in the sheer heart-wrenching, gut-twistingly f*ed-up-ness of it all. But even as the reader is swept up in the plot, the characterizations of the Winchesters stays consistent and realistic through it all (though admittedly Dean's characterization does take somewhat of a left turn half way through, but I think it's acceptable given what he's gone through at that point.)
The only real quibble I have with this fic is that at some points, it seems like [livejournal.com profile] leonidaslion is writing three different stories, and trying to pass it off as one cohesive narrative. However, the writing itself is engaging and well-paced, and I especially liked that it isn't one of those h/c fics where "so-and-so is subjected [insert bad thing here], and such-and-such makes it all better!". Dean goes through some terrible stuff, and while Sam tries to make it better, he usually ends up making it worse. How depressingly refreshing.

Timetravel anyone?
Title: The Fifth Act
Author: Sinnatious (http://sinnatious.livejournal.com)
Rating: T for violence.
Length: Long...
Status: Incomplete (@ 34 chapters)
Summary: FFVII Time-travel. Gen. Cloud has an accident with a Time Materia.

Review: If you've been reading all those epic timetravel fanfictions dealing with FFVII, then you know how long it is until the next update (if ever). Luckily, this author updates weekly to get your fill of divergent verse.

When Cloud physically travels back in time before the Wutai War, he has some emotional things to deal with like his obsession with killing Sephiroth... The title comes from Loveless, the unfinished play that Genesis is obsessed with. It doesn't have any pairings but involves a look into the mind of other main characters like Genesis and Sephiroth. But future!Cloud has a big effect on the past, but that doesn't mean some crucial events still won't happen (only in a twist of fate). The author certainly has all the background info down, so everyone is in character. It's certainly a fresh way to read a timetravel fic!
