Resonance by GreenGecko (PG-13)

  • Jul. 20th, 2009 at 8:29 AM
First off, it's movie week at [livejournal.com profile] real_world_recs. I'm kicking things off with "The Abyss", which is not only a kick-ass sci-fi adventure, but is also the movie that is responsible for my eternal crush on Ed Harris (yum).

Secondly, I've already recced this over at [livejournal.com profile] epic_rants, so figure I should share it with you as well. Prepare for a solid week of reading:)

Title: Resonance by GreenGecko

Categories: angst, hurt/comfort, action/adventure, drama, AU (deviates from canon after book 5)

Review:
Harry defeats Voldemort and is adopted by Snape. And that's just the very beginning of the story.

Wow, the list of things I like about this fic is long indeed. I'll do my best to break it down into coherent chunks.

First, the author mentions that this story is her attempt to make a Snape-adopts-Harry storyline realistic and she does a brilliant job with it. Their relationship is slow-building (did you see the word count?) and developed over time (the story timeline stretches nearly two years) and by the end of the fic I had a tough time remembering that this isn't really what happened in canon.

I'm also thrilled by the very premise of this story. In my experience, the vast majority Harry Potter stories that include Voldemort fall into two categories: either the story ends with the defeat of Voldemort, or Voldemort was defeated long before the story began. This fic kills off Voldemort in the first few chapters and spends the rest of the time detailing what happens next. How does Harry handle all of that fame? How much fame is there, really? What about all of the less pleasant fallout, like the remaining death eaters? And, most importantly, how does a teenager with an abusive past, an uncertain future, and a murder on his conscience ever manage to fully recover from, well, his life?

While answering the above questions, GreenGecko thankfully manages to avoid most of the major cliches: Harry is not rich, Ron is neither a bastard nor a mindlessly loyal friend, Draco is screwed up but not pure evil, and life after Hogwarts is just as confusing for Harry as it is for every single new graduate on earth. The lack of cliches are made even better by top-notch writing and great characterizations, especially of Harry, who grows so much as a character in this fic that by the end you can hardly believe they are the same person, and yet the growth is so natural and organic that you barely notice it happening as you read.

Speaking of characterizations, I should note that the Snape you see in this fic is not necessarily the Snape you usually see in canon or fanon. Less randomly nasty (nor quite as witty as he often is in fanon), this Snape is brisk, pragmatic, and utterly lacking in empathy. Frankly, this is the version of Snape that would happen in real life, all things being equal, and the end result is one of my favorite variations of Snape I've ever seen.

Also as part of the realism, GreenGecko has fleshed out her story (especially the post-Hogwarts sections) with a bevy of OCs. The ones that come later in the book are especially well developed and by the end of the fic I was very emotionally invested in several of them.

Finally, you have the pacing of the story, which is unusual in that it's remarkably laid back. Every moment of the story is enjoyable to read, but there were very few times when I felt like I just couldn't put the fic down until I finished it. Considering the length of the story, I actually consider this slower pacing to be a bonus -- as much as I enjoy fics that are too gripping to put down, it would take a solid three day weekend without sleep for me to finish this all in one sitting. Instead I had something to look forward to in my free time for nearly a week and for someone who reads as fast as I do, that's not something to take lightly.

Final verdict: a beautifully written, wonderfully characterized, vastly entertaining, and amazingly epic story with a mellow pace. Perfect for anyone who likes well-written epics and slow-building relationships (albeit not romantic ones).

Resonance

ETA: I finally got around to reading (well, okay, I'm about halfway through) the sequel to Resonance, called Revolution.  It's much more Harry-centric than Harry-and-Snape-centric and thus isn't going to get a rec from me.  However, lots of folks from this comm have read it and loved it, so you might want to give it a shot.

I've gotta thank you for the rec, I've been having oodles of fun with this story! Though I never did check the number of chapters and tried to finish it all in one night. It just kept going! About halfway through, now. o.o

My only problem with it was that Harry wasn't rich, actually. I worry enough about money in my own life, I don't need to read about someone else worrying about money. Whee, vicarious stress-related ulcer, yay? :/

Yeah, I prefer it when Harry is rich, too, but I have to admit, it was a rather nice change of pace (as long as it only happens rarely:) And I did like the fact that he had someone to turn to and that Snape handled the entire situation with grace. I *heart* Snape in this fic:)

Yes, Snape is great in this fic! And not weirdly OOC perfect, either!

The lack of richness was innovative, yes, and I appreciate it for that. But worrying over tuition = flashbacks for me. Bleh. Fortunately he's a hero and can obtain money! ... I need to kill a dark wizard. Know any? ::sigh::

Just Epic Recs and Epic Rants, which are very much sister comms:) I also have Real World Recs (and might eventually create a Real World Rants comm, just because I have lots of issues with real life media as I do with fanfic.)

Enjoy!

Though I should note that Epic Rants is most emphatically *not* a rec comm -- though folks have been known to read fics specifically for the reason why I'm ranting about them:) This particular case was a special one in which a long-term reader requested an HP rec in the comments to one of my rants.

Thanks for the rec! I've actually never heard of this one, and it sounds fantastic.

You're welcome! You've gotta love a fandom where the best fics are routinely more than 100,000 words:)

Did you realize this has two sequels, just as long and just as good? ::ded of reading::

Hee! I did realize, but I haven't started reading them yet (thus the reason I didn't mention them in the review -- frankly they're long enough that they deserve a rec of their own if they're as good as I'm assuming they will be).

I'm also glad this is proving to be so universally well liked! It always makes me nervous to rec fics with OCs, because I know folks tend to dismiss such fics out of hand, but this one is really, really good.

Well, the third in the series isn't finished yet, but her website has those tracking monitors, and if people don't devour the first two fics in two days, they shouldn't have to wait long for the third! But yes, I think the sequel might be even better! This writer is really good at plot, characterization, pacing, and even foreshadowing! I don't see a lot of good foreshadowing, even in published fic. ^_^

... I'm going to have to wait then. I ALMOST clicked on the link to the sequel but then I decided to restrain myself and not read another 100k+ story in two days. But yes, I remember when Secrets was still WiP and I was constantly refreshing. Bad times, especially when Vorabiza put up the last 20 chapters at once and I started on them halfway through and then caught up to the moderation process and had to wait 15 MINUTES and it was omg so hard.

Well, like I said, the second sequel is done, and you could let it end there for a while until the third is finished. ^_^

I definitely second this rec. I first read it several years ago, and it is immensely enjoyable. I didn't go on to the sequels, but mainly because it was a couple years before I came back to find there were sequels in the works :P (I'm also not a big fan of having both a largely OC cast /and/ het -- better off with gen or slash fics, if only for social politics. Oh well.)

But yeah. I'm glad to see a truly epic-length rec go up. :D

"I'm glad to see a truly epic-length rec go up. :D"

Amen! If only there were more super-duper epics out there that were actually well written (I've read most of them now and have to say that many of the fandom classics aren't going to be recced at ER (at least not by me)). Still, I'll keep downloading long fic and giving them a try -- maybe I'll stumble across another gem:)
