RR -- Supernatural/Horror

  • Oct. 26th, 2009 at 8:57 AM
Now that I've whetted your appetite with some recs, it's time for ya'll to rec to us. Got any good ghost stories? What are your favorite 'bump in the night fics'? How about a nice vampire/werewolf/zombie fic? [personal profile] meishaliwill give you virtual cookies for the latter:)

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one). We are actively seeking new reccers at the moment. If you'd like to be considered, be sure to do a full review similar to the reviews posted on the comm.

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: Supernatural and/or Horror

I second Shaenie's story!

I've also read another "Atlantis overrun by zombies" story where John (and everyone else) was turned into zombies and Rodney was the only one left. The ending was very bleak. Anyone remember the title?

Did Someone say Monster Fics?
My 2 favorite monster fics come from the same author in the same fandom - [livejournal.com profile] astolat's American Idol RPS.

For the best zombie fic I've read in years, try House of the Living (http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/idol/House%20of%20the%20Living.shtml). It's scary, horrifying and heartbreaking. Yum! The ultimate 'look-what-happened-on-tour' fic with a decidedly Stephen King twist. You don't have to be a RPS fan or heck, even an American Idol fan to enjoy this piece of the macabre. But oh, if you watched the show, it will chill ya'. Try it during the day.

And then there is her creature feature American Idol RPS called City of A Thousand Wonders (http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/idol/City%20of%20a%20Thousand%20Wonders.html). It reminds me of the old black and whites we used to watch so many years ago. Deliciously twisted with so many in-jokes, it can still be read by a non-viewer of AI with delight.

Even if you don't like RPS .. or American Idol ... give 'em a try. You won't regret it.

Zombie recs
[info]starlingthefool 's Rush Down Darkness

Part 1: http://starlingthefool.livejournal.com/49249.html
Part 2: http://starlingthefool.livejournal.com/51463.html
Part 3: http://starlingthefool.livejournal.com/56506.html

Fandom: House
Pairing: House & Wilson friendship
My summary: House and Wilson basically try to kill each other, over and over.

I don't see this story recommended much, but it's one of my absolute favorites in any fandom. There are so many moments where you'll be on the edge of your seat, biting your fingernails, wondering what will happen next, but it is still exciting to re-read. It's a crossover with World War Z, which I had never heard of before but I understood the story all the same.

Atonement (http://community.livejournal.com/cap_ironman/198274.html) by [livejournal.com profile] gekizetsu. A Supernatural/Avengers cross-over where Steve Rogers is possessed by a SPN-style demon. Rated R, around 25,000 words, Captain America/Iron Man, warnings for violence, non-con, and demonic possession (is it partner betrayal if you're assaulted by a demon in your lover's body?).

And one of my all-time my favorite SPN fics:

In Reverse (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2787883/1/) by sodakey (link is to ff.net).
Epic length, not rated, but I'd guess somewhere between PG-13 and R. No character death or rape, a little violence.
Sam and Dean get invited to spend a weekend at a mountain cabin with some of Sam's old college friends, and end up hunting down a vengeful ghost. (author's summary: "Ghosts are being blamed for 3 missing hikers. Sam worries it’s connected to what happened to Dean ten years ago—and Sam's Stanford friends make Dean wonder if Sam shouldn’t leave their life, and him, once and for all.").

I'm pretty sure I've recced [livejournal.com profile] etherati's Now as Before in the readers recs on here before, and I know I've already recced it on sequential_crack, but since it *is* a zombie fic:

Now As Before (http://etherati.livejournal.com/8531.html) by etherati. R, Nite Owl/Rorschach, around 20,000 words, warnings for violence, zombies created by handwavey science, and the offscreen death of a child.
Rorschach gets turned into a zombie by a zombie!virus. Nite Owl sees no reason why this should be allowed to disrupt their partnership, especially since they're each going to need someone to guard their back as they fight off the zombie apocalypse.
Breeding Lilacs (http://etherati.livejournal.com/22903.html). Follow-up/epilogue/sequal to NaB. NC-17. Don't be put off by the fact that it contains Daniel Dreiberg having sex with a zombie -- I swear it's hot and romantic and not disgusting at all.
Of Cats & Lizards (http://etherati.livejournal.com/25126.html). Another short sequal fic. G-rated fluff.
Little Things (http://etherati.livejournal.com/26090.html). Yet another short follow-up fic. Relationship negotiation fluff (R-ish).

There is also an AU dark ending that follows Breeding Lilacs, Dissolution (http://etherati.livejournal.com/26220.html) but it contains major character death and is really, really dark. If you do read it, I suggest reading it before Cats & Lizards and Little Things and then reading those to reassure yourself that *that's* what actually happened.

Thank you! I've never read any Watchman fics before but this series certainly sounds very promising. Will I need to know any background/canon?

Will I need to know any background/canon?

Um... It's hard to say -- the reading experience is certainy enriched if you do, because part of the impact of Now as Before's ending depends on knowing how it diverges from canon. But since this is set before the timeline of the graphic novel/movie, you don't actually have to know anything that happens in canon to understand what's going on (it also, because of that, doesn't have any real spoilers for the comic/movie).

There's a pretty good fandom/canon overview over at [livejournal.com profile] sequentialcrack, if you want some basic info on who these people are and what they look like (in a nutshell: Dan is the tall, cute one with glasses who likes owls, and Rorschach is the short, homely one with freckles who likes breaking people's fingers).

Watchmen is usually an automatic no for me, because I'm a wimp and I know enough about canon to be wary. Since this is AU, though, I'm tempted. I'm guessing you know my tastes fairly well -- should I risk it? Thanks!
[identity profile] elspethdixon.livejournal.com wrote:

Well, there's no non-con in this one, and it ends more happily than the comic does -- but it is set in a pretty darkish world, compared to a lot of other fandoms, and the zombie outbreak doesn't pull many punches. I'd say, read at your own risk, because there is a relatively happy ending and no major character death or rape, but it's still Watchmen.

Or you could try just reading Cats & Lizards and Little Things, which are both pretty much entirely fluff.

[livejournal.com profile] amonitrate's tell your mother it wasn't i (http://amonitrate.livejournal.com/355645.html)
Fandom: Iron Man ( movieverse )
Pairing: None.
Rating: Unrated. I'd probably say PG/PG-13
Length : Short ( ~6000 words )

At first Rhodey thinks it's a toy.

It's not quite zombies, or ghosts, or even vampires, because in the Marvel verse we've managed to explain those sort of things away with a handy little thing called mutation. But it is a bump-in-the-night sort of fic, with a horribly creepy little tag line, and Tony's version of asking for help: calling up Rodney on Halloween, and asking what he does when the kids cry.

Somehow this author's stuff always sticks with me -- it's the sort of fic I copy onto my Kindle so I can keep reading over and over again If this were another fandom, I'd describe this as a great case-fic. But Iron Man doesn't have cases. He has creepy little missions and nursery rhymes.
