Review:
This is a small fandom at the moment but already there are one or two memorable classic stories, although to be fair none that really deserve the description 'epic'. This, however, is one of the more satisfying. It's a little short on specifics and motivation but then it is intended as a PWP and we all know what to expect with those. Here Lewis is being slightly annoying, trying to wrap his brain round what it would be like to be sexually involved with a man, when Hathaway gets tired of his questions and gives him a demonstration. Naturally, when kissed by his Sergeant, Lewis responds by kissing him back; he has, of course, only been waiting for James to show an interest in him. Before too long they are having sex in the shower and Lewis is learning to overcome a great many taboos which had previously been part of his life.
James Hathaway is rather oblique and quite challenging for a writer to get a handle on; here, he is perhaps not quite as accurately portrayed as Lewis, but nevertheless he comes over as a cool, easy-going character who is difficult to upset. The down-side of this is that we don’t quite get the emotional involvement from him that we do from Lewis, and their exchanges seem rather more practical than romantic. Nonetheless they seem to enjoy one another, and there is a definite sense of commitment in the way James involves himself in Lewis's life.
With writing as good as this it is always a regret that the author has not chosen to go more deeply into the subject and produce something detailed and substantial. What is here is, like the aroma of garlic bread emerging from an Italian restaurant, delightful in itself but really only just enough to whet the appetite for more. If the same author returns to this relationship in the future, it will almost certainly have been worth waiting for. I hope that at some stage she can be persuaded to do so.
