When Jack is assigned a ‘damned distasteful’ mission, he struggles to protect his team from the darker shades of grey.

I’ve recced this author here before at epic_recs and rightfully so, Charli Booker does some excellent characterization and point-of-view work, both of which that mesh delightfully in this story. Filled with more drama than you can shake a stick at, The Sword and The Sickle explores the darker side of Jack’s position within not only the stargate program but his team as well. Forced to balance being their leader, one who is just as susceptible to the demands of his rank as any airmen, with being their friend, one they know to be a good man, Jack’s struggle in this story is both gut wrenching and genuine.

We aren’t expected to believe that the mission that Jack is given is easy or that he’s a willing participant in it. What we are expected to believe, however, is Jack is bound by his duty. A duty that he takes serious and doesn’t shy away from, even when the task he is given is a hard one.
