RR -- It's My Birthday!

  • Oct. 15th, 2007 at 9:00 AM

And I'll party if I want to!

To celebrate my turning another year older, I've decided to:

a) Induldge in shameless -- but charming, witty, and very upper crust -- fluff.  Yes, that's right, it's Jeeves and Wooster week here at Epic Recs!

b) Post a Birthday Wish List.  Below are a list of fandoms and pairings that I don't currently read, but for which I'd dearly love to get lost in a good, long story.  If you'd like to celebrate my birthday with me, just point me in the direction of a fic that meets one (or more:) of the following topics.  Links are, as always, treasured beyond measure:)  Thanks in advance!

Fandoms I have loved, but wandered away from:
La Femme Nikita: Michael/Nikita
X-Files: Mulder/Scully
(Jossverse fic would be on this list, but season 7 of BtVS destroyed all Jossverse characters for me except for Faith.  And then only because she wasn't actually present in the season till the finale.)

Fandoms I would like to love, but can't seem to find any freaking fic for:
Psych: Shawn/Lassiter
Harry Potter: Hermione/Harry or Draco/Harry
Bones: Booth/Bones
The Closer: Brenda/Gabriel
Monk: Disher/Stottlemeyer
Xena: Xena/Gabrielle
Firefly: Gen (seriously, gen)
Wire in the Blood: Tony/Carol
Ruroni Kenshin: Karou/Kenshin
Fruits Basket: Kyo/Tohru
MacGyver: anything.  Absolutely anything.  Except, you know, death fic.

Other stuff:
Due South: Fraser/Vecchio
Due South: Fraser/Kowalski (just cause that horse isn't quite dead yet...)

Side note: someone mentioned in in a comment to the new fandoms post from last week that L&O: SVU is a good place to find femslash, which got me thinking.  I'm starting to realize that I'm kind of an oddball in fandom in that I don't love slash to the exclusion of het.  Generally speaking, I read slash in fandoms in which there aren't any good female characters (SGA and Smallville fans, feel free to argue with me:); if a fandom does have good, strong female characters, I tend to read het.  And then there's Xena, which doesn't have any good *male* characters (though I'll admit to having a soft spot for Joxer, probably because I have a soft spot for Ted Raimi).  Although, I do think slash is better written as a whole.  Hm...  Where's Blair Sandburg and his adorable anthropological analysis when you need him?

Happy Birthday, Jane!
And many happy returns! :handsyouflowers:

You don't know of any good H/D???? You can't be serious? You don't want me to rec the classics to you, do you? You mean new book 6/7 stuff, or what?

Re: Happy Birthday, Jane!
Thank you! I have to admit that I haven't actually celebrated my birthday the last few years, so I'm really going all out today.

I haven't read book 7 (and it probably will be a while till I do, considering how disillusioned I am by the series), so earlier fic would be appreciated. Especially if it's happy and long. Thanks!

Re: Happy Birthday, Jane!
Seriously, there are tons of good HP fics out there, a lot of which are written by 'older' fans.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude or anything. I'm meishali at livejournal, but I don't ever sign-in because I don't want livejournal to track where I browse.

Heh. I had kind of assumed that the anonymous poster was you (only not logged in). Good to know the fics are good, though:) Do you have any specific stories I should start with?

Thanks!

Re: Happy Birthday, Jane!
Well, *I* started out in HP with "Irrisistible Poison" which at that time was the fic that ate the fandom. LOL (dinosaurs still walked the earth). "Ooh, Something Shiny..." it you want sweet and funny, "Adamant and Starlight" and the other one by Corvette Claire for high sentiment, everything Mirabella and Mistful for pretty good language. From what I've seen you can hardly go wrong.

Hi.. :waves sheepishly:: I'm a lurker that has enjoyed your recs for some time now. Happy birthday!

If you have a soft spot for Joxer and Ted Raimi, a visit to the Joxerotica Archive: http://joxerotica.brain-insane.com/

might be worth your time. Some of the fics are great, and I know there's several long fics there.

Ooo, and a whole archive devoted to Joxer. What a brilliant idea:) Thanks!

You can find a couple of good Shawn/Lassiter recs here (http://www.greatestjournal.com/community/mercys_recs/tag/shawn/lassiter). [livejournal.com profile] shawn_lassiter is a great community, though it's been a bit quiet now that the show is on hiatus till January.
There's also hundreds of fantastic Fraser/Kowalski recs over at [livejournal.com profile] rec50

You are the awesomest of all awesome people, ever! I've been looking for Shawn/Lassiter recs for ages, and no one I knew could tell me where to look. Thank you!

Hi!
I just found this site and want to say thank you! I love long stories, so this was exactly what I needed.

And now I'm going to take this chance to rec my favourite Firefly-fic.

Jayne's Magnificent Cock
Summary: River has a secret. Jayne has a chicken. Hilarity ensues.
http://distraction77.livejournal.com/19568.html
The most ingenious, in-character and just plain funny fic I've been able to find for Firefly.
Seriously, I've read it about a dozen times, but I still burst out laughing at some point.
Somewhat short, but definitely worth every second.

Big Damn Zombies, Sir
SUMMARY: "He eats all their brains / And he gnaws on their bones / Was never too bright / Now he's dead as the stones / Our love for this idea's not hard to explain / Who could resist him, the zombie called Jayne!"
http://bifictionalbedlam.slashcity.net/shrift/zombified.html
Yep, Zombie!Jayne.
Don't let the subject matter bother you; it's funny, in-character, has a masterful command of the slang, and just *works* in ways I never expected a zombie-fic to work.

Water in one hand (Mal/Simon, crew, PG-13)
Summary: Terraforming is a precise business.
http://ana-grrl.livejournal.com/80587.html
I like it because it just fits the tone of the show. That life-goes-on-no-matter-what, people-sometimes-die, governments-look-at-the-bigger-picture, some-people-just-get-the-shot-end-of-the-stick feel.
The Mal/Simon isn't the focus, but nice nonetheless.

Learning Curve
Summary: The crew faces the fact that River is a young woman, not a girl.
http://firefly.populli.org/archive/5/learningcurve.shtml
It's a lovely story and deals with River growing up quite realistically. She certainly doesn't lose her unexpectedness or her unique way with words.

I have gone out
SUMMARY: River dreams reality, and reality dreams her.
http://bifictionalbedlam.slashcity.net/shrift/ihavegone.html
Beautiful.
Very short, but oh so beautiful.

Unchained Melody
Pairings: Um . Jayne/Vera
Summary: That ain't no way to treat a lady.
http://firefly.populli.org/archive/2/unchainedmelody.shtml
*chuckles evily*

By the way, I totally second your call for Disher/Stottlemeyer fic. I'm having a hard time seeing any non-canon pairing for Monk, but this I think could work.

Oh, and as for Harry/Draco I can only point you in Mistful's direction.
http://mistful.livejournal.com/
I haven't yet read her slashy stories, but from what I have seen from her writing it can be nothing less than fantastic.
Beware though! She's pulling all her fanfic off the web in about a year.

Firefly fic, yay! I've already read Big Damn Zombies, but I'm grateful for the link, because I think I want to rec it. The rest I haven't read, so I look forward to checking them out.

As for Disher/Stottlemeyer: honestly this isn't a pairing that I would have normally considered. That is, until I saw season three (or was it four?) You know, the one where each kept saving the other and there were longing glances and sitting at each other's feet while singing songs (seriously). *sigh* Unfortunately, tracking down Monk fic is like finding a needle in a haystack, and anything I can find pairs someone up with Monk. Monk! Can you seriously picture Monk having sex? *shudder*

Thanks for the links! (And I'm happy to hear you're enjoying the community -- if you don't mind my asking, how did you find it?)

I'll add another happy birthday in here (as you can tell, i'm catching up while my roommate steals the stove ::sigh:: i really wanted dinner. mmm, food.)

I personally cannot rec much of this (the closer for specific reasons, as my mother's name is brenda, and that's just... no. absolutely not.) i wish to god i knew any good Kenshin fics or Fruits basket, because they're both adorable, and I love them, but alas, I've never found much. Plus, I haven't been in anime fandoms in a while, I was much younger then, and... they're kind of scary.

I am, however, totally excited abotu the HP, Psych, and firefly recs.

and i also haven't read the 7th book! I have it sitting on my shelf, but it's so BIG and HEAVY and i don't want to carry it around every day!

Heh. Fortunately my mom's name isn't currently fashionable, as I don't know if I could read fic with her name either:)

Anime is so freaking hit or miss (mostly miss) that I have to be in a really, really good mood before trying to find anything good in it. Definitely not a good sign when the most frequent warning you see is "characters are very OOC". Also, they don't give a warning for character death!

Thanks for the birthday wishes:)

So, a good place to find lots of recs (no repeats) in the HP community is the [profile] crack_broom community on lj. They tag, so you can just hit H/D and H/Her for the recs. Those aren't actually my fave pairings anymore-- I used to be a massive H/D fan, but now I'm all about the snark more than the schoolboy rivalries. Pretty sure [profile] crack_broom warns for Book 7 spoilers too.
All things said, my favorite H/D story is Secrets by Vorabiza and it is definitely an epic read. Post book 6.
