RR -- Canon Pairings

  • May. 18th, 2009 at 8:27 AM

Welcome to Canon Pairings Week here at Epic Recs!  This is an entirely new theme for us (and I'll admit that we found it pretty challenging to come up with stories), so I'm doubly excited to see which stories ya'll can rec back to us.

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: Canon Pairings

Thick As Thieves (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/547730/1/Thick_as_Thieves) by Valerie Jones and Lori McDonald.
X-Men (comic-verse) Rogue/Gambit, with bonus Bobby Drake/OC. Rated PG. Epic-length.

Bobby falls in love with a member of the New York thieves guild, and gets Gambit to teach him how to be a thief and sponsor him in the guild so that he can better pursue his new love. Meanwhile, there's guild treachery and evil plots and battles to the death going on. A substantial part of it is Gambit & Bobby friendship fic, but there's a major Gambit/Rogue subplot.

Valerie Jones is one of the BNF of old-school X-Men fandom (pre-movie verse, back when people wrote about more characters than just the Summers family and Wolverine). Her Gambit fic was justly famous back in the day.

A Raising in the Sun (http://www.allaboutspike.com/fic.html?id=10) and Necessary Evils (http://www.allaboutspike.com/fic.html?id=9) (and sequels), by BarbG. Epic-length.

Following Buffy's death at the end of season five, Spike, Willow, & Dawn concoct a plan and cast a spell to bring her back. They're sucessful, but the spell has unintended consequences.

Nobody does Spuffy like Barb does Spuffy, and this epic length AU will heal the pain of season 6 of BTVS. Rated PG-13 through NC-17, and a minor warning for character death (Buffy's dead at the beginning, but she gets better. Another major character dies later in the series, but they also get better, if coming back as a vampire counts as better).

How to Tell if Your Chick is True (http://duskdog717.livejournal.com/19247.html) by [livejournal.com profile] duskdog717. DCU (the JLI and/or Green Lantern Corp segment of the DCU, to be precise) Guy/Tora. Rated PG-13-to-R, I think. Short.

An excerpt from Chapter Fourteen of Guy Gardner's best-selling book "How To Win At Life: A Guide for Hal Jordan and Other People Who Suck", interlaced with flashbacks of Guy putting his foolproof method to work.
Warning: Guy Gardner is love, but he's also a massive, massive dick about 75% percent of the time, including in this story. Elements of it might qualify as partner betrayal.

I wouldn't have guessed this would be such an unpopular thread! I suppose there are readers out there, like me, that only look for canon pairing fics when the original material is skimpy on good relationship moments or have less than satisfying endings? Here is my rec, I hope more people will post, too!

You and Me and a Dog Named Flea (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3658247/1/You_and_Me_and_a_Dog_Named_Flea) by fridayblues (go to livejournal (http://fridayblues.livejournal.com/6382.html) for more fics in the verse)
Cute, happy (and epic!), modern AU of Jack Twist/Ennis Del Mar from Brokeback Mountain with Jack as a magazine journalist and Ennis as a city veterinarian and an owner of a cute dog named Flea.

I know that's how I feel -- if the pairing is developed enough in canon, I usually don't need fanfic (especially since the fanfic is usually less interesting than the original).

Brokeback Mountain, however, is definitely a fandom for which I'd like alternate versions. Thanks for the rec!

Personally I read quite a few canon pairings. I'm not sure what I haven't already recced here in the past though; e.g. I've probably mentioned the Jack/Ianto Torchwood fics I like, and I've linked to the Elizabeth/Darcy ones a few times I think.

How about Star Wars? Have I recced those?
Han/Leia (http://delicious.com/Lanta/han%2Fleia)
Luke/Mara (http://delicious.com/Lanta/luke%2Fmara)
Jaina/Jag (http://delicious.com/Lanta/jaina%2Fjag)
Anakin/Padme (http://delicious.com/Lanta/anakin%2Fpadm%C3%A9)

Or my very first fanfiction fandom, CSI - Grissom/Sara (http://mayitbe.co.uk/csihet/index.html#gsr). GSR has a lot of great fanfiction, or else I wouldn't be here today! Miss Jazz's "Faithful Light" is very good, as is some of Teenwitch's work, and forensicsgirl... oh, and if you like adoption fics, I've still not found any in other fandoms that I like as much as some of the CSI ones. E.g. Castles in the Air, Greatest Gift, etc.

Also, Buffyverse. There's a couple of Xander/Cordelia fics I love... Wish Upon a Cheating Boy (http://lit-gal.livejournal.com/219797.html) by Lit Gal, Teach Me to Hear the Mermaids Singing (http://carleton97.populli.net/mermaids.htm#pro) by carleton97. And quite a lot of Angel/Cordelia (http://delicious.com/Lanta/angel%2Fcordelia).

I hope somebody'll enjoy those... I know that they're not the most popular ones around (I almost always prefer rarer pairings... ironic, when you consider these particular ones are all canon too).
