Title: Freeport by Maldoror
Fandom: Gundam Wing
Pairing: Duo/Wufei [In Gundam Wing fandom, each Gundam is a number. Heero is 1, Duo 2, etc. This fic is 2x5, 2 = Duo Maxwell and 5 = Chang Wufei. (Trust me, it's not as confusing as you think.)]
Categories: Action/Adventure, Case File, Drama, Future, kinda post-canon
Length: Epic - Novel Length+
Warnings: Some disturbing imagery early on as they are hunting a killer who likes to take his victims out with a machete. And Wufei thinks he's going to the giant den of sin. Wufei is often mistaken. Sex, of course.

Review:
Taking place 5+ years after the series, Freeport is an incredible story of perceptions. Chang Wufei is sure he is walking into a den of smugglers, thieves, pirates and killers when he convinces his old war ally, Duo Maxwell, to be his guide in Freeport as he searches for an assassin. All he know of the space colony is rumors and stories but the truth is something else entirely. But when finding his target becomes secondary to just surviving on this colony like no other with a man he only thought he knew - when the laws and politics aren't clear for a Preventer - when Duo Maxwell becomes his only safe constant, watch out universe! Chang Wufei is about to discover what he is really made of.

Freeport is a wonderful scifi action/adventure masquerading as a fanfic. Long, in-depth, and involving, the romance between the characters is almost secondary to the love story of the characters to Freeport. I never quite knew where the author was going to take me, making each chapter a revelation. While this fic reads fast, it is not little so block out a couple days. An added treat, the author is current re-writing it - to repair what 'she' sees as flaws in her writing. So you get 2 views of the same story - both incredible. Even if you don't know the fandom, it is easy to pick up the history you need to make this a very satisfying read.

Freeport (first of about a bazillion parts, hotlinked)

I've been kinda hesitant to read this, despite my love of 02x05, but your review here is making me think twice. I was worried it was going to be too dark and angsty, but your story makes it sound like a mystery or thriller. I may have to give it a go, once I've got a week's worth of time to read it! Thanks for the review!

Oh, Thank you!! That exactly what I was trying to get across in the review. If you've watched Law & Order and/or have seen the Die Hard movies, you have seen as 'bad' as this gets. But if you are a Gundam Wing fan - especially if you love Duo Maxwell/Chang Wufei as much as I do - you will adore this. The story is so *thick*, the world-building so incredible, I am just amazed. I hope you enjoy this as much as I have.

Cool beans! I just wanted you to know that your review has caused me to change my mind. And if I'm not watching one of the Law and Orders I'm watching a CSI or NCIS so this is right up my alley. So yeah, looking forward to finding some time to read it! I'm having to take a break from epics right now, I just read Voracity's Chicago series again and my brain is fried.

Ooh, I didn't know Maldoror was re-writing/editing the story. I'll have to check it out!

I adore this story. It's the first 2x5 I ever read that made me believe the pairing was possible. Also, as an anarchist I found the philosophies examined in this very interesting.

I've been vacillating about "Freeport", just because I've been worried that the new version will mean the old one gets wiped - and I really liked the old one! Actually, I can't even bring myself to read the new one. Is the new one very different? *is askeerd*

But thanks for reccing both - the first story-version I *know* is simply excellent, and Maldoror is a great author in the fandoms she cares about.

Thanks so much for rec'ing this story! GW isn't one of my fandoms, but I've read a couple crossovers with GW and thus am slightly familiar with the characters. Your rec encouraged me to go ahead and give this story a try, and I absolutely loved it!! It had such wonderful descriptions of the characters and their motivations and personalities (I imagine that this may be in part due to being set post-series, where the author could take some liberties in evolving the characters past their canon teenage selves). As you said, the world-building was incredible - drew me right in, and the plot kept me completely hooked!

I think it's definitely made me want to read more in GW - do you have any other recs (or links to recs pages) for a newbie GW fan?
