Summary: This AU overlaps 'our' DBZ universe to begin with - but then some of 'our' boys must deal with a very different reality.

Review: The gang has all gathered to celebrate the New Year at Kame’s Lookout when Goten and Trunks accidently uncover a mirror that transports people between universes. Piccolo, Yamcha, and Kirririn are dragged through and find themselves in a universe where Goku never became good.

Since there has been a resent DragonBall movie completely rewrote the original anime’s plot I thought I’d give everyone quick overview of the original DragonBall/DragonBallZ before I gave my review.

Dragon Ball follows a young Sayian, named Goku, as he searches for the “Mystical Dragon Balls”, a set of seven balls created by the Namekian Gardian of the Earth in order to grant wishes. Along the way he meets a young female genius named Bulma, a desert bandit named Yamcha, a young shoulin monk name Kirririn( aka Krillin), and Piccolo Jr. who is the son of of an evil Namekian named Demon Lord Picollo.

Dragon Ball Z follows an adult Goku, His sons Gohan and Goten, and Piccolo (aka Piccolo Jr.) as they face a number of threats to earth’s safety. Most notable of those is Vegeta the Prince of the Sayians. Who later becomes “good”, marries Bulma, and has two children Trunks and Bra.

Kingdom Come is one of my favorite Alternate Universe Dragon Ball Z fics. It is impressive because even the periphery AU characters are given a life story that makes you care about what happens to them. Summer Starr and DeanyBean don’t ascribe to political correctness or the idea of “the badguy made me do it”. Their characters make choices and mistakes and are forced into doing horrible things by the circumstances they find themselves in. The Alternate Universe is a true dark universe where no heroes come to save the day and there are no happy ending.

The story takes a happier turn after the Piccolo, Yamcha, and Kirririn return to their own universe, but it remains serious as the boys try to deal with the changes in both themselves and their original universe. Doesn’t worry though despite all the angst the story does end in its own version of Happily Ever After.
