Fanfiction.net heads up

  • Apr. 18th, 2009 at 7:06 PM
Just an FYI for those who use Fanfiction Downloader to pull stories from ff.net:  Fanfiction.net changed...something... that makes FF Downloader not work anymore.  There is a new version of the program that fixes the problem (released the same day the problem occured!  Raimonds is clearly on the ball).   You can find it here:

Really? How annoying. Thanks for the link :)

Isn't it though? And the frustrating thing is that I can't figure out what they did or why. I'm just very happy that Raimonds updated the program so quickly -- I was all set to panic otherwise.

Thanks for the heads-up. I have become totally dependent on Fanfiction Downloader for my offline reading!

Same here. If FF Downloader stopped working for any reason, I seriously doubt I'd ever read from ff.net again.

Crazy Thoughts
Thanks for the heads up.

Just to share my conspiracy theory (of the day) with y'all, could FF.net have done this on purpose because if people just download and run they don't get quite as much ad revinue? My theory doesn't really hold up because not very many people use Fanfiction Downloader, but just thought I'd put that out there.

Re: Crazy Thoughts
Who knows? I've long since given up figuring out why ff.net does anything:)

Re: Crazy Thoughts
Hmm, yeah. After that whole "Let's Purify FF.net" crusade, I pretty much left the site alone. I only go there if people rec stories that I can't find anywhere else.

Re: Crazy Thoughts
As a reccer, I have to brave the untried masses. The end result is pretty grim, but I do occasionally find a gem.

Re: Crazy Thoughts
Yeah. I look back on what I used to read on FF.net (9...10 years ago?) and it's not pretty. I always find myself a little surprised when I find a good one among the bunch. That's why I love the Fanfiction Downloader. It's frustrating spending half and hour to 45 minutes downloading a story with 50, 70, 100 chapters, only to find out it's not so good. S'why I cruise recs, too.

There is a program for downloading fics from ff.net!?!

GAH!!!

I just spent hours paste/copying a story on fictionpress my friend told me about. *facepalm*

ARGH!

Seriously, thank you for this post! If only I had known earlier... *shakes head*

Though - I have to admit, I also find myself spending less and less time on ff.net. Especially after that last round of "cleaning up". *glares*

So, YAY for recs! :-)

Hee! We mentioned it a while ago, but it's probably something that could stand to be reiterated on a regular basis. Really is an awesome program isn't it? :)

When was the last round of cleaning up? (If it was before I came to the site then I'm not going to get worked up about it, but if it's within the last few months I plan on being righteously indignant.)

I only found this comm by chance a couple of months ago, so I probably missed that post.
So far, RL has kept me from sifting back through the archive (I'm doing my A-levels at the moment).

When was the last round of cleaning up?
I'm not so sure about that - I was out of the loop for a while (read: addicted to Harry/Draco on hpfandom.net *grin*), but when I came back, I noticed a distinct lack of new stories above a certain rating - or new slash stories, for that matter.
But I'm not certain whether that is because of a deliberate clean-up or (finally, you could say) the result of many authors abandoning ff.net for greener pastures.

Huh. You know, lately I've seen nothing *but* stories above a certain rating (though, keep in mind that the highest possible rating at the moment is M). That said, are you sure that you're seeing all potential stories? The filters are set by default to ignore M rated stories (which bugged the heck out of me when I first noticed it. Grr.)

Mhm. I'll check that out. Maybe it's just my fandoms?
But yeah, I did check the filters.

I prefer reading at LJ anyway, though.
It's more - personal? I don't know. But while I'm a total lurker on ff.net, I sometimes crawl out from under my rock to actually give some feedback on LJ :-) (Of course, that could have something to do with he fact that my computer wouldn't let me use any of the functions like feedback,k add to favourites, etc *puzzled*)

At the moment I'm lucky if I have enough free time to check for updates, though... :-( *goes back to studying*
