When SG-1 goes on a routine mission, Jack becomes sick and is gravely injured. The team can get him home, but can they save him?
On a number of levels, this story is one that I consider classically Stargate. Though written completely from O'Neill's point-of-view, it features a cadre of throwbacks to the series, such as a strong sense of team, smartass O'Neill, an unknown illness, and bad guy to fight. It also features some major Jack hurt/comfort, another classic in the sense that 85% of all fan fiction consists of some sort of whumpage, and that almost the entirety of the series itself features someone getting hurt in some form or fashion.
While I admit that point-of-view stories can sometimes detract from the story itself, I can’t deny that the author does an excellent job of not only finding and using Jack’s voice but also doing so in a way that makes the situation that much more dire. We, much like Jack, are forced to face his mortality and go along with him right to the edge, which is something I doubt could have been accomplished any other way. That being said, the usage of other characters throughout the story, sometimes to inject humor and other times to inject that much more concern, really solidifies this as a wonderful story from beginning to end.
