RR -- Harlequin!

  • Feb. 9th, 2009 at 8:54 AM
To help celebrate Valentine's Day (or, as I personally think of it, Half-Priced Candy Day on the 15th), we're having a Harlequin Theme Week here at ER! Since Harlequin AUs cover pretty much every one of my favorite genres (marriage of convenience! homeless fic! broken canon pairings where the bad guy is reformed! fluffy plots that would totally work as a Hollywood romantic comedy!) I'm very excited about this week in general and the recs ya'll have for us in particular. (And just *wait* till you see what [personal profile] lolitakunis reccing.)

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to). All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: HARLEQUIN!

Previous RR topics can be found here.

OMG, I love Harlequin based fanfic! And I'm a sucker for the boys getting married and then falling in love.

Fandon:Star Gate Atantis
Pairing:Sheppard/McKay
Genre: Get Together Fic, AU
Title: The Convenient Husband (http://community.livejournal.com/sga_flashfic/156116.html)
Author: Brighid

Summary: John needs a husband, Rodney needs John. Nice touch of Cluelessness on the part of both.

Fandom: Star Gate Atlantis
Pairing: Sheppard/McKay
Genre: Get together fic, AU
Title: Rules of Engagement (http://velocitygrass.livejournal.com/62709.html).
Author: Velocitygrass

Summary: Apparently he was going to marry Rodney Mckay.

Thanks so much for letting me rec two of my favorite SGA fics!

Thank you! I love The Convenient Husband, but I don't think I've read Rules of Engagement. Clearly that is a problem that needs to be rectified immediately:)

SPN RPS is rife with Harlequin fics...

Hee! I won't be reading any of these (sorry but RPS has proven to be the squick that just won't go away), but I find the summaries hilarious. And awesome. So very, very awesome (dude I *love* Harlequin week:)

Thanks!

*shrugs* RPS isn't for everyone. But should you ever feel weak...these are good first reads.
Also? I concur, Harlequin week is *awesome*

more Harlequin RPS
It's a shame you don't read any RPS b/c I'm sure you, and anyone else who hasn't read this yet, could use another 'woke-up-in-vegas-married-and-stayed-married-to-avoid-a-scandal' marriage of convenience fic with a happy ending :)

Woke Up Married (http://archiveofourown.org/en/works/2277?view_adult=true) by celli
Fandom: American Idol-Season 7 RPF
Pairing: Cook/Archuletta
Length: ~16,000 words
Author's summary: "Archie, we got married at--at Elvis's Chapel O' Love and Rainbows. And you're fine with that?"

Nice fluffy fic, not necessary to be an AI fan to enjoy, highly recommend!

Re: more Harlequin RPS
I've tried, I really have! But the moment a real person's name appears on the screen, I just start twitching until I close the browser. Well, a modern person's name. I think I'd be able to read historical figure RPS if all of the players had passed away. While they're still alive, however, I can't help but sit there and wonder what they'd think if they stumbled across the story I'm reading.

That said, there appear to be many RPS fans at ER, so I trust your rec will not go to waste:) Thanks!

The first one. I'd say it's one of the fandom classics. :)

Fandom: Merlin
I don't know what exactly qualifies as Harlequin, but there's [livejournal.com profile] harlequinmerlin, with few fics, and I really liked this one:

Lord Drake's Bequest (http://community.livejournal.com/harlequinmerlin/1855.html) by [livejournal.com profile] pennyplainknits - Arthur needs to marry to take control of Tintagel Distribution. Fortunately he knows the right man for the job.

and maybe this one is Harlequin as well:

Drastically Redefining Protocol (http://rageprufrock.livejournal.com/tag/drastically+redefining+protocol) by [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock (even though by now, most people will have read it despite the fact that it's still a WIP) - Arthur is the Prince of Wales. He meets Merlin in the supply closet of a children's hospital.

i doubt there are any sv fics in existence, that you could rec to me, that I have not read, unless its not clex *g*.
I have my theme rec journal here , though I only update once per year or so, just in case you or you co-reccers want to have a look:
http://theme-clex-recs.livejournal.com/

for the epic ones, I even have an own entry:
long clex series/novels, that I consider to be classics

danceswithgary did not self pimped, but she is also, aside from myself, one of the most active reccers in clex SV fandom, and here is her theme rec journal:
http://danceswithclex.livejournal.com/952.html

for the epic ones
http://danceswithclex.livejournal.com/10229.html?format=light

and of course, she is writing very, very long clex stories as well, she has several index fic entries on top of the LJ :)

More Smallville...
Title: The Litney Universe Year One: Daddy Longlegs (http://www.elrondsisle.com/thelitney/universe.html)
Authors: B'Lane & Elrond.
Pairing: Whitney/Lionel. With Clark/Lex in the background. Previous Whitney/Clark mentioned.
Rating: NC-17
Set four years after the episode "Obscura", this entire story revolves around the growing relationship between Whitney Fordman and his benefactor, Lionel Luthor. Despite the fact that the sequel seems to floating in dead water, the first story between Lionel and Whitney is finished. It's well worth the read, especially since Lionel is still in character (i.e. rampaging asshole to most people) but still manages to fall in love with Whitney (despite his best efforts not to).

Re: More Smallville...
*blinks* Uh, really? I mean, I'm willing to give it a shot (I do like unusual pairings), but.... really?

(Serious, does the first story stand alone and have a happy ending? If so, I really will give it a read. Thanks!)

Re: More Smallville...
That was pretty much my reaction when I first read it but it works surprisingly well. The first story, Daddy Longlegs, definitely ends happy and works easily as a stand alone. I never bothered starting the sequel and am perfectly happy where it ended. :)

I'll probably rec more, once I find my little harlequin section, but one that jumps out in the SGA Fandom (that hasn't already been recced):

What I Want (http://crownglass39.livejournal.com/91385.html) by [livejournal.com profile] crownglass39
McShep (SGA)
NC-17
38,000 word
Summary: It was not some unworldly force hurtling its way to the earth that would change John Sheppard’s life forever, but one lone man, someone literally thrown at John’s feet, tossed away like yesterday’s rubbish, a man named Rodney McKay.
