Review:
When John Myers heard he was being transferred to Antarctica, he’d expected penguins, snow, and cold so deep he could feel it in his bones. Instead, he got a jungle paradise filled with monsters, strange ruins from a lost culture, and a surly elf determined to kill him and every other human on base the instant he lets his guard down. He would have preferred the cold.

I have to confess that I wasn’t a huge fan of Hellboy 2. Despite its beautiful imagery and wide array of new creatures/beings, it just wasn’t what I was hoping for or expecting, especially in regards to characters like John Myers, who were mostly shoved aside. Even so, I’ve found a lot of my dissatisfaction with it slackened by fics like this one.

Told from his point-of-view during his stay in Antarctica, I liked that the author plunged right into the nitty-gritty of the story without trying to explain the hows and whys of the situation immediately. Instead, we’re left to shift for ourselves, working through the explanations with John, and getting a peek at what life must be like for him. Similarly, the interaction between John and Nuada and their eventual relationship was interesting to ‘see’ unfold, though I would have liked a bit more “flesh on the bones” of that particular aspect of the fic since I felt like things were only just starting to get interesting when the story ended.

Overall, however, this fic was a quick and fun read that’s well worth the time spent on it.
