Review:
Another Tira Nog fic, another melodramatic angst fest (though this time she can at least say that it's based on a *cinematic* melodramatic angst fest). And it is glorious.

In the 1950's, Rodney McKay, just coming out of a borderline abusive relationship, takes a cruise on his own to try and figure out what he's going to do with the rest of his life. Enter John Sheppard, world-famous playboy who is known to hit on just about anything. Heh.

I've never seen the movie and this story doesn't inspire me to go out and rent it, because the best part of this fic is the gay angle and how it was handled in the the time period. The need for secrecy gives this story an edge that really makes the relationship spark, and that combined with the beautiful locales and a spot-on interpretation of 1950's attitudes make this fic a must-read. Added bonus: intriguing (and unexpected) appearances by Elizabeth and Teyla and an enjoyable turn by Carson and Laura.

Hee! I actually made up BNS for Big Name Stories (such as Freedom Is Just Another Word for Nothing Left to Lose, which is absolutely raved about, and which I didn't even manage to get halfway through.) There are a few BNFs (Shalott, Speranza) that write stories I consider worth reading, but most (and I won't name names, because that's a can of worms I just don't want to open) are horribly overrated. IM(not so humble, because I'm still crabby, damnit)O.

Oh, well, I liked Freedom, but it seriously broke me. That's why I can't even imagine reading THe Holographic Body, too much angst & sadness & the ending isn't exactly happy. Mutilation & hurt and stuff... argh. I still shudder at the memory of that story where the Atlantis expedition is decimated by some sort of gangrene virus, & John & Rodney are on Earth & John comes into Rodney's room & Rodney has no arms.
& it ends there.
No magic cyborg arms, no people-fixing nanobots frozen in Antartica & coming back to life at John's gene ansgty call or whatever. GAH!

Now that I've finally admitted to myself that I want happy endings, or at the very least hopeful ones, dammit, I try to avoid fics that have me mope around for days.
I only wish that Sholio & Megtipper, for instance, would write more, especially Rodney!whump - & cap it all with all-healing gay buttsex, of course ;-) (ah, liketheriver & likethekoschka's stories!) They both write long h/c where everybody ends up in the infirmary & live for another broken bones fest! yay!

As a reader, I'm not very difficult most of the time - but I still wonder who you like best & less? Not that I want to stir shit up, but because I'm curious to know if other people think the same as me or not, & why.

Mail me if you want, if only to rave about Tira Nog's HL stories & OMG the PAIIIIN. mlc at multileggedcreature dot info
BTW did you find your Sentinel/DS story?

I'd love to continue this via e-mail, but I'm not sure how to get your address. Mine is janethunder at gmail dot com.

Which are your favorite stories by Sholio, Megtipper, liketheriver, and likethekoschka? (Scarily enough, I've never heard of them, and I thought I was pretty well read in SGA).
