RR -- Your Fandom Autobiography

  • Feb. 6th, 2009 at 9:18 AM

We've hit 500 readers! Yay!! Squee!!!  *flail*

Ahem.  To celebrate, Mei and I (but mostly Mei) have developed a fandom autobiography, designed to tell the world how your fanfic tastes were developed (and, incidentally, to produce tons of recs at the same time, we hope:)  To participate, just copy and paste the questions into a comment and answer as many as you can, as well as you can.  If you do list specific stories, please include links so we can share the love.

(FYI, I'll be posting my own answers as soon as I can after getting this up and then -- bonus recs!  This is the best Friday ever:)

For the readers:

What was your first fandom?
To be honest, I'm not totally sure. It was either Buffy or The X-Files, and I shipped Buffy/Angel and Scully/Mulder.

What was the first story you read in that fandom?
Who knows? Heck, I don't even remember any of the titles of stories I read, though the one I remember the most of was actually Willow/Angel and, uh, featured some fairly kinky sex (at one point Willow had her hands tied behind her back while Angel held himself over her and, well, I'm sure you get the point). Willow was immortal for some reason and I think the story ended with Angel going to back Buffy for as long as Buffy had left (not long) and then he and Willow planned to be together. Does anyone else remember this?

What was your favorite story in that fandom?
Again, no clue. In my defense, this was ten years ago...

What was your first slash fandom?
*This* one I know:) My first slash fandom was Smallville, because Clex is canon:)

What was the first story you read in that fandom?
I don't remember the first one, but as Smallville was my gateway fandom into SGA, I can offer the first story I read in my *second* slash fandom: Gene Therapy by Lady Ra
http://www.visionsofprettyboys.com/Smallville/GeneTherapy.htm

What was your favorite story in that fandom?
Too many favorites to count, but a few of my top choices are:
Revenge by Astolat
http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/smallville/Revenge.html

Moving On by Astolat
http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/smallville/Moving%20On.html

Reconcilable Differences by Astolat (uh, yeah, I'm sure you see a pattern here -- IMO, Astolat did her best work in the Smallville fandom)
http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/smallville/Reconcilable_Differences.html

And, to break things up a bit: Omiai by Rose Emily
http://www.smallville.slashdom.net/archive/37/omiai.html

What was your first het fandom?
See above. Heh. (Thus I'm skipping the next couple of questions as well.)

What was your first gen fandom?
Actually, this was The Sentinel. I've never been a big fan of gen, but The Sentinel is one fandom where gen is well done (also where it's very badly done, but I choose to block those stories out.) Of course I also read slash in this fandom (because the number of people who only read gen in the TS fandom is very, *very* small...)

What was the first story you read in that fandom?
Out of Whack by Bone and Aristide (*not* a gen fic)
http://www.mrks.org/~bone/sentinel/whack/outofwhack_1.html
http://www.mrks.org/~bone/sentinel/whack/outofwhack_2.html

What was your favorite story in that fandom?
Harbor of My Heart by Romslinger (um, also not a gen fic)
http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/4/harborof.html

Gen-wise, we have Now That Larry's Gone by Arianna
http://www.wolfpanther.com/stories/larry.html

What was the first explicit story you read?
Something Buffy or X-Files related, I'm sure:)

Favorite kissing story?
You know, I'm not sure I can think of an answer to this -- nothing jumps out at me. I have to admit that kissing is not my biggest kink.

(part the second)

What is your favorite story of all time? (If you can't pick just one, you can do a list, but try to keep it to under five stories)
Evil, *evil* question. *sigh*. To make things easier, I'm limiting myself to just one fic per fandom and not including any stories linked above (and even then I'm missing a *lot* of stories I'd like to list). Note that all of the stories below are really!freaking!epic:

Picture This by TrudiRose (Beauty and the Beast, Belle/Gaston)
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2831327/1/Picture_This

True North by Crysothemis (Due South, Fraser/RayK)
http://crys.mrks.org/fic/tn/truenorth.html

Cambiare Podentes: Invocare & Madurare by Jordan Grant (Harry Potter, Harry/Snape)
http://www.the-archive.net/viewstory.php?sid=3254
http://www.the-archive.net/viewstory.php?sid=5786

A Modest Proposal by ignazwisdom (House, House/Wilson)
http://ignaz.betweenthepages.org/amodestproposal.html

The Quality of Mercy Series by Tira Nog (Highlander, Ducan/Methos)
http://community.livejournal.com/epic_recs/21319.html (I've linked all of the parts here)

Okay, that was actually painful. I could have easily doubled that number (One Good Man! Zero at the Bone! Everingham! Like a House on Fire! *sob*)

BTW, if you'd like full blown reviews of any of the above fics, they've all been recced here at ER. The easiest way to find them would probably to look under the appropriate fandom in our memories:
http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=epic_recs

What fandoms have you written in? Which was your first?
Gah. Okay, in mostly chronological order: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The X-Files, La Femme Nikita, Due South, Smallville, Fastlane, Dark Angel, The 10th Kingdom, Stargate Atlantis, Pride and Prejudice, MacGyver, The Closer, Twin Peaks, Due South, The Sentinel, 3:10 to Yuma, F/X the series, Ballykissangel, Primeval, Best Student Council, and The Quick and the Dead. And I know I missed some from my early years. Damn that early-onset senility.

What was your first story?
Sunnydale (written under my old handle RedThunder) -- Buffy, The X-Files, and La Femme Nikita. And, I'm rather stunned to find, still available online. Read at your own risk (better you than me. *shudder*)
http://www.geocities.com/TelevisionCity/Set/9934/fanficIII.html

Which of your stories was the most popular?
The Proposition (SGA, McShep, really freaking big word count)
http://jane-elliot.inkquill.com/fiction/proposition.html

Which story do *you* think is your best?
The Darkness Within (The Closer/Twin Peaks, Brenda/Gabriel UST, really freaking big word count)

Which story do *you* think is your best? I dont know which is my best, I'm useless at judging, my favourite is my OC fic There Is Just One Thing I Need, or actually... Or my Enterprise fic (Target Practice Series), which is more self indulgent Malcolm orientated fic, but its the most fun to write

I got a bit carried away with the summaries...

What was your first fandom?
Heroes was my first everything fandom, with brief forays into Life on Mars, Merlin, Psych and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

What was the first story you read in that fandom?
I have no idea! I read everything and anything that came my way. The story that brought me out of lurkerdom, though, I do remember: All That Could Have Been (http://carmexgirl.livejournal.com/17315.html#cutid1) by [livejournal.com profile] carmexgirl (Matt/Mohinder, Mohinder/Sylar; NC-17). It's non-powered AU in which Mohinder is trapped in an abusive relationship with Sylar, and Matt is the cop who is sent to deal with the domestic violence reports that the neighbours call in. I was so moved by her portrayal of domestic violence, and how someone as strong as Mohinder could end up in that situation, that I was unwittingly dragged into fandom. :)

What was the first explicit story you read? Smut Stew 'verse (http://community.livejournal.com/pdlf/22835.html) by lana (Peter/Sylar/Gabriel)

Favorite kissing story? Lip Service (http://widestance75.livejournal.com/18666.html) by [livejournal.com profile] widestance75 (Mohinder/Zane!Sylar)

What is your favorite story of all time?
Toxic (http://kethni.livejournal.com/47321.html) by [livejournal.com profile] kethni
(Matt/Mohinder; NC-17 - violence, non/dub-con sex; ~40,000 for the whole 'verse)
Maybe this is cheating because this is a 'verse that consists of 9 interconnected fics, but as a whole, it is one of my all time favourites. It's a dark, angst-ridden Matt/Mohinder fic set in the '5 Years Gone' future from S1. In it we see how nice guy Matt Parkman could become the violent, jaded Head of Homeland Security of 5YG. It's filled with violent hate sex and Mohinder's gradual mental breakdown as he has to come to terms with the things he has done in the name of his research. What I enjoyed most were the supporting characters Audrey, Elle and Janice because [livejournal.com profile] kethni has their voices pitch-perfect. In particular, Janice, who is often ignored for the sake of convenience in Matt/Mohinder fic, has a heart breaking role to play in this epic.

Perhaps Love (http://community.livejournal.com/heroes_exchange/4415.html#cutid1) by [livejournal.com profile] moorishflower
(Mohinder/Sylar; hard R; ~5,000)
A truly beautiful fic that centres around the emotional aftermath of Sylar's deceit in Montana, as told in the four movements of a sympathy. The pacing reflects the tempo and feel of each "movement" as Mohinder transitions from regret to devastating apathy to an eventual confession. Sylar is present only in Mohinder's recollections and it's a heartbreaking situation when seen solely from Mohinder's point of view.

And Punishment (http://community.livejournal.com/mylar_fic/677803.html) by [livejournal.com profile] papierparachute
(Mohinder/Sylar; hard R; ~4,500)
Set during Mohinder and Sylar's S1 roadtrip, and written in the style of Dostoevsky's 'Crime and Punishment', this is, to me, one of the best looks inside Sylar's mind. Her Sylar is very detached from everything around him, constantly observing and analysing, looking for weaknesses that he can exploit, even during sex, and that seemed very true to the character for me.

What fandoms have you written in?
Heroes

What was your first story?
Pay-Per-View (http://perdiccas.livejournal.com/1342.html#cutid1)
(Mohinder/Sylar; NC-17; ~16,000 for both parts)
A very, very smutty and very, very plotless roadtrip fic.

Which of your stories was the most popular?
Fear & Self-Loathing (http://perdiccas.livejournal.com/8692.html#cutid1)
(Mohinder/Sylar; NC-17; ~30,000)
Missing scene fic between Unexpected and Parasite. After discovering Dale's body, Mohinder and Zane are faced with a thirty-six hour drive back to New York. Mohinder has trouble coming to terms with the brutality of the murder and finds Zane's non-reaction to her death increasingly disturbing. As they drive, Mohinder's suspicions mount that Zane may not be who he says he is, and, trapped beside each other in the car, Mohinder is forced to confront what has happened between them in Montana.

Which story do *you* think is your best?
Love, Deconstructed (http://perdiccas.livejournal.com/142139.html)
(Mohinder/Gabriel; NC-17; ~4,800)
This is a look at what an established, romantic relationship might be like between Mohinder and Gabriel if Gabriel were asexual, as many suspected he was in S1. I posted it without expecting anyone to be interested in reading it and was honestly blown away with the kind of visceral response people seemed to have to it.

What fandoms have you written in? So many, I can't recall them all off the top of my head. The main ones were Roswell, Earth: Final Conflict, Due South, BattleStar Galactica 2003, Golden Girls, House M.D., Torchwood/Doctor Who, Heroes, The Magnificent Seven, Supernatural, Alien Nation, StarGate SG-1/Atlantis, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer/Angel: The Series, Kindred: The Embraced/Vampire the Masquerade, StarTrek: Enterprise, Horatio Hornblower, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Special Unit 2, Threshold, and Wolf Lake. Those are all fandoms I have written 5 or more stories in.
Which was your first? Roswell
What was your first story? Liz Parker: No More PMS (Putting Up with Max's Shit.)
Which of your stories was the most popular? That's a toss up. I had 3 really popular Torchwood fics, and one really popular BSG fic. The BSG one however, I think got the most reviews. So, it would be: Deliver Me (http://www.squidge.org/~peja/cgi-bin/viewstory.php?sid=28456)
Which story do *you* think is your best? That's hard to say. Each of my recent fics is a little better than the one before, but my changing styles consistently clash with the different fandoms, so they tend to lag in some area. But the one I think I am most proud of is a Torchwood/Doctor Who fic, but only because it has the fewest mistakes. There are so many others, so great. I'm not deluded, I know I'm a good writer. So, without further adieu, my best fic: Companion (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/torchwoodfic/2875.html) by Lopaka Tanu aka Me!

What was your first fandom?
The X-Files. Or Star Trek: TOS.

What was the first story you read in that fandom?
I honestly don't remember.

What was your favorite story in that fandom?
The X-files:
24/7 by Xanthe (Skinner/Mulder)
http://www.xanthe.org/Novels/247title.html
Exigency by Zoe Takashi and Louise Wu (Skinner/Krycek)
http://lzl.dreamhost.com/Stories/Exigency.html
I'm not super crazy about the h/c fics that dominate the Star Trek: TOS fandom. Sorry, no recs.

What was your first slash fandom?
My first "real" fandoms were mostly slash. I was a Mulder/Skully fan when it came to the show, but I just couldn't read about them having sex.

What was the first story you read in that fandom?
See above.

What was your favorite story in that fandom?
See above.

What was your first het fandom?
Jane Austen novels.

What was the first story you read in that fandom?
Don't remember. :(

What was your favorite story in that fandom?
A Prudent Motive by Malini (Elizabeth/Darcy)
http://www.austen.com/derby/old_2003/malini9e.htm

What was your first gen fandom?
I've actually read some stories from the Chinese Kung Fu novel fandoms before seriously getting into a particular "fandom". They are mostly gen stories about, well, Kung Fu, honour, family loyalty, betrayal, more honour...and lots of people getting killed. Luckily, I don't think there are any English translations.
Other than that, I don't read much gen in fandom.

What was the first story you read in that fandom?
See above.

What was your favorite story in that fandom?
See above.

What was the first explicit story you read?
I don't know, but probably The Story of O. Seriously. I was underage, but I bought the book from a bookstore (one of those big, chain stores) and it didn't have an age-statement or whatever on it. I thought it was the most boring book ever.
In fandom, the one I remember is The Adversary by Xanthe (Skinner/Mulder)
http://www.xanthe.org/Novels/adversary.htm

Favorite kissing story?
Um...I don't know. I never paid much attention to kissing scenes, or sex scenes for that matter. They usually bore me, but I suppose that means I haven't read a very memorable one.

What is your favorite story of all time? (If you can't pick just one, you can do a list, but try to keep it to under five stories)
I think that's very difficult for me to say. There are stories I think are great story -- writing, plot, characterization, impact, the works -- but I would never (or rarely) re-read, and there are stories I think are not "great" per se but would read over and over again.
Story list to follow in next post.

*Did we decide whether it's 5 per fandom or 5 in total? Just joking*

Stories that I loved but probably will never be able to re-read them again in entirety.

SGA:
Written by the Victors by Speranza (there is explicit Rodney/John, but I would say this qualifies as gen)
http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/Victors.html

Freedom's Just Another Word For Nothing Left To Lose by Synecdochic (past Rodney/John, but really, it's gen)
http://www.kekkai.org/synecdochic/sga/freedoms_just_another_word.html

Ichor by Lobelia
http://www.geocities.com/lobelia321/ichor.html

SPN:

For the readers:
What was your first fandom? Veronica Mars
What was the first story you read in that fandom? I have no idea. I don't even know how I found VM fic to begin with, though I'm sure it was on livejournal somewhere.
What was your favorite story in that fandom? I remember being really in love with something that [livejournal.com profile] gertinator wrote (possibly one of her Lilly-is-still-alive AUs) but a quick scan through her fic index didn't make anything leap out. There was a hiatus project called All Fall Down that was pretty neat - a mystery arc written by 20 different authors.

What was your first slash fandom? I'm pretty sure I read some early Supernatural fic, but it never stuck. I didn't get into Stargate: Atlantis for the slash (I did most of my reading at [livejournal.com profile] lostcityfound, which is gen and het) but I kept seeing all this ranting about the McShep people who were taking over fandom, and eventually I had to go see what the fuss was about.
What was your favorite story in that fandom? I am a big fan of Rebuilding Babel by [livejournal.com profile] fiercelydreamed

What was your first het fandom? (other than VM) Dark Angel, Max/Alec
What was the first story you read in that fandom? probably the Left Behind series
What was your favorite story in that fandom? Before I Sleep series by Wildsky: Chimera (complete), Damage (complete), and Whisper (WIP, presumably abandoned)

What was your first gen fandom? I've never been a fan of genfic, as a whole, for a fandom. The closest I usually get is canon relationships. However, [livejournal.com profile] miss_porcupine writes fabulous genfic for SGA
What was your favorite story in that fandom? I don't know if I could pick one, but The Legend of Smedley Duckler, the Fighting Quacker is a good window into the happy side of her Atlantis. She's also got an epic ongoing project in Qui Habitat, an Ori-based (later Season Stargate: SG-1 bad guys) sort of apocafic that I haven't managed to read all of yet.

What was the first explicit story you read? I read a *lot* of horrible porny romance novels growing up, so by the time I got to fandom, I was pretty numb to it. I'm sure it was something from [livejournal.com profile] loveathons but I haven't the faintest idea what.
Favorite kissing story? man, I have no idea, but now I totally want to write something that's just about kissing.
What is your favorite story of all time? My favorites are stories that I could read over and over:
Unidentified by [livejournal.com profile] fiercelydreamed SGA AU, John Sheppard/Rodney McKay
Recovering the Satellites by [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic SG:1 Samantha Carter/Cameron Mitchell
That Guy series by [livejournal.com profile] utopiantrunks - particularly Point B Live Free or Die Hard John McClane/Matt Farrell

For the writers:
What fandoms have you written in? Veronica Mars, The Office, Stargate: SG-1 and Atlantis, Die Hard
What was your first story? Humor me Veronica Mars. I didn't stick around in fandom long enough to write any of the Veronica/Weevil in my head.
Which of your stories was the most popular? Er, maybe My Stupid Mouth The Office, Jim/Pam. Take as a given that "popular" is an extremely relative term.
Which story do *you* think is your best? I'm awfully fond of I'll be Home for Christmas - Die Hard, John McClane/Matt Farrell, featuring Lucy McClane and her boyfriend - but again, "best" in relative terms... :)

What was your first fandom?
It may have been Gundam Wing or Due south, I got a computer and discovered FF.net and was lost. But i had been reading Tie-in books for years and that like fanfic for professionals. No it was stargate, 'cos i printed it out and took it round my Mum's to show my little brothers.

What was the first story you read in that fandom?
I can't remember the name but it was on a site called bookcase and it was about the Egyptian god of writing coming to the SGC to help them out.

What was your favourite story in that fandom?
Not my biggest famdom anymore so i have not got one.

What was your first slash fandom?
Gundam wing.
When I was a kid I though Matt Tracker's Dad was going out with the bald guy in MASK (a cartoon when I was like under 10) but there was never any proof in the show, and I have never found and fan fic.

What was the first story you read in that fandom?
I have no clue i read all the slash on FF.net back when they had adult stuff and i did not know better.

What was your favourite story in that fandom?
Greased wing

What was your first het fandom?
Never did Het, I don't get it

I can't remember the name but it was on a site called bookcase and it was about the Egyptian god of writing coming to the SGC to help them out.

That sounds like A friend among enemies by Nix ([livejournal.com profile] crimsonquills) I haven't read it - I just remember the author's note on the story and that its an older story. Her current/newer stuff (Captain America/Iron Man, and slash and gen NCIS) is made of awesome.

Ummm...I think it was the Wild Magic/Immortals series by Tamora Pierce. (What? I was like, eleven.)
What was the first story you read in that fandom?
I don't remember the exact one, but it was on FF.net, and it was Daine/Numair :)
What was your favorite story in that fandom?
It's been so long since I've set foot in that fandom, so I don't remember the title, but Daine had to go back to Galla, and Numair was all sad and emo and she left they declared their love for each other. Yeah, I know, great summary, but I remember liking it a lot.

What was your first slash fandom?
Officially, it was Naruto, and more specifically SasuNaru, but I'd been reading yaoi manga for over a year by then, but I'd never read any fanfic for them :P
What was the first story you read in that fandom?
Gah, I hate that I can't remember 'cuz it was so long ago! But I think it was a fic where Naruto got turned into a fox, and Sasuke took care of him :)

Writer answers (will do reader ones later)
For the writers:
What fandoms have you written in? Which was your first?
Not counting one-off fandoms where I only did one fic:
Harry Potter, Trigun, Pirates of the Caribbean, Tombstone, Lonesome Dove, Magnificent Seven, Three Musketeers, James Bond (books - okay this was only one fic but I spent a year writing it), and Marvel Comics.

What was your first story?

Not counting filk? "Not All Scars are Visible", which was a typical HP fifth-year fic. Het, too.

Which of your stories was the most popular?

I don't really know. Not All Scars are Visible has the most ff.net reviews, and is favorites-listed by the most people, A Pirate's Life has the next most and has been recced a couple of places, but I'm going to have to go with Resurrection, Reconstruction & Redemption, because it's not the most popular story in Iron Man fandom by a long shot (that would be "The Kids Aren't All Right"), but it pretty much single-handedly started Avengers&Steve/Tony fandom. I co-wrote it, though, which may throw the count off because only half the credit rightfully belongs to me.

Hey, I *love* RR&R and haven't even read The Kids Aren't All Right (I hate magazine articles, so I've yet to bring myself to read a *faux* magazine article, though it's in my to-read folder in case I ever get truly desperate for something to read). Plus I love Steve/Tony. Therefore, you are my hero:)

They were good enough to get me hooked on the show for life, but I wouldn't put them in my list of the top 100 QAF fics.
What was your favorite story in that fandom? Didn't I just mention a top 100 list? But for any newbies out there, Subject to Change (http://soundczech.livejournal.com/59991.html) by [livejournal.com profile] soundczech, is a probably my favorite fic to rec b/c you don't need to know the canon much to enjoy it.

What was your favorite story in that fandom? Ditto.

What was your first slash fandom? see above

What was your first het fandom? My what? :)

What was your first gen fandom? And... ditto.

What was the first explicit story you read? I'm totally failing here.

Favorite kissing story? erm...
What is your favorite story of all time?
Okay, a question I can answer :) Inclination (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/1_2000_au/inclination.html) by Laura Jaquez Valentine. A Sentinel AU set in the Star Trek universe. Blair is a Vulcan, with a secret.

For the writers:
What fandoms have you written in? Which was your first? My first was due South; didn't write any other fic for about 4 years. Then I wrote a few random stories in Starsky & Hutch, High Chaparral, Angel, Stargate SG-1, The Invisible Man, along with a few one offs. Then I got into The Sentinel; still there nine years later.

What was your first story? Aftermath. I don't recommend it :P
Which of your stories was the most popular? Probably Paying the Rent (http://elaine.slashzone.org/archive/viewstory.php?sid=135) Sentinel AU.
Which story do *you* think is your best? That's hard. Either Paying the Rent and its sequels or Timing (http://elaine.slashzone.org/archive/viewstory.php?sid=148) another AU invoving reincarnation (and therefore a death story, kinda)

For the readers:

What was your first fandom? SG-1
What was the first story you read in that fandom? Oh, I can't remember now... I stumbled across Area 52 (http://www.area52hkh.net/) completely by chance whilst surfing, so something from there. I remember going 'Jack and Daniel?!?! Hmmm, interesting....' and that was it! *g*
What was your favorite story in that fandom? I've not read any SG-1 fic for some time now, but my favourite story was Rainbow Warrior (http://www.sgcsquared.com/slash/rainbow.htm) by Lady Grey.

What was your first slash fandom? As above... I was totally converted by Jack/Daniel and it all just snowballed from there...!

What was your first het fandom? I'm ashamed to say it's all been slash for me...

What was your first gen fandom? Nope - don't have one of those either, I'm afraid.

What was the first explicit story you read? I'm afraid I can't remember, but it would have been something from SG-1.

Favorite kissing story? I love long stories, so my favourites all involve a lot more than just kissing... That said, the first time Harry and Severus kiss properly in Tira Nog's wonderful story Whispers of Intent (http://tiranog.southroad.com/harry_potter/Whispers_of_Intent.htm) is still pretty vivid in my mind. *g*

What is your favorite story of all time? Oh, this is going to be *tricky*, there are so many! I'd say that the two fandoms I'm reading most at the moment are SGA (McShep) and HP (Snarry). In both fandoms, I've read and loved so many stories. Okay, so limiting myself to 2 per fandom and going purely on the stories I've found myself re-reading the most, in SGA my favs would have to be Coming Home by Xanthe and Be Loved (http://velocitygrass.livejournal.com/9937.html) by [livejournal.com profile] velocitygrass. In HP, it would be Sanguis-Vinculum (;http://solo4.abac.com/CircuitArchive/SanguisVinculum.htm') by Meri and and An Unconventional Relationship (http://srtcfics.livejournal.com/9558.html) by TCRegan and Sophie Richard.

For the writers:

What fandoms have you written in? My main fandom as a writer is SGA, although I have written one short TW ficlet.

What was your first story? Aspirations (http://the-cephalopod.livejournal.com/2375.html). And I find that I'm still rather fond of it.

Which of your stories was the most popular? I'm not entirely sure, I know that a lot of people enjoyed both Catalyst (http://the-cephalopod.livejournal.com/14474.html) and When I Sorrow Most (http://the-cephalopod.livejournal.com/28959.html). In terms of comments, I've received the most on a story I co-wrote with [livejournal.com profile] sgamadison called Chaos Theory (http://the-cephalopod.livejournal.com/25151.html).

Which story do *you* think is your best? When I Sorrow Most (http://the-cephalopod.livejournal.com/28959.html) without a doubt. It was a struggle at times and I was terrified about rushing the ending and so ruining it, but it was a story that had been in my head for a long time and one that really pushed me as a writer. I'm pleased with how it turned out - I felt like I did my original ideas justice, which is really the best I could hope for!

Answering as a writer
What fandoms have you written in? Which was your first?
Only really The Sentinel in any kind of serious way. That said, I have also written one Darklight story (Loss of Faith (http://fluterbev-fic.livejournal.com/16433.html)), and have dabbled with a Doctor Who/TS crossover (which is currrently unfinished).

As children in the 1970s, a friend and I used to scribble Star Wars and Doctor Who stories in notebooks (we had Darth Vader pegged as Luke's dad long before George Lucas went there), but we didn't know it was called fanfiction back then :-).

What was your first story?
First proper fanfiction story would be I Can Be You Oo Oo (http://fluterbev-fic.livejournal.com/3087.html), which is a gen missing scene for the TS episode Cypher.

Which of your stories was the most popular?
Conforming to Requirements (http://fluterbev-fic.livejournal.com/20951.html).

Which story do *you* think is your best?
That'd be a toss-up between a short pre-slash snippet called Mosaic (http://fluterbev-fic.livejournal.com/3951.html), and The Night Terrors (http://fluterbev-fic.livejournal.com/31046.html), which is a three-part fantasy AU that I am currently finishing off the last part of.

And as a reader
What was your first fandom?
In an online sense, Robin of Sherwood and The X-Files, both of which I was reading at the same time.

What was the first story you read in that fandom?
I can't remember any story or author names.

What was your favorite story in that fandom?
In X-Files I was rather partial to the shippy Scully/Mulder stuff. In Robin of Sherwood, anything that was well-written and had characters I recognised from canon.

What was your first slash fandom?
I read aimlessly around various slash fandoms, including Three Musketeers, Batman & Robin and loads more, before becoming thoroughly obsessed by The Sentinel (which was my first proper fandom of any kind in terms of how I engaged with it).

What was the first story you read in that fandom?
Turn Upon a Dragon's Wing (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/1_2000_au/turnupon.html) by Sorka

What was your favorite story in that fandom?
Oh gosh, so many to choose from. Maybe Distant Journey, Unknown Lands (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/3/distantjourney.html) by Martha and Lemon Drop. Give it a day or two and I might have a different answer :-).

What was your first het fandom?
X-Files

What was the first story you read in that fandom? What was your favorite story in that fandom?
I really can't remember. No particular favourite.

What was your first gen fandom? What was the first story you read in that fandom? What was your favorite story in that fandom?
First proper engaging with gen fic in any kind of significant way would be The Sentinel. No idea what the first one was that I read; maybe something by Martha or Kitty or LRH Balzer. My favourite gen story? Too many to choose from, but I am rather partial to No Center Line (http://members.shaw.ca/LRHBalzer/stories/ncl.html) by LRH Balzer, and Unsleeping (http://soulcake.skeeter63.org/unsleeping.html) by Martha

What was the first explicit story you read?
No idea, I've read so many!

Favorite kissing story?
None leap out in my memory, though there are lots of good ones.

What is your favorite story of all time?  (If you can't pick just one, you can do a list, but try to keep it to under five stories)
Distant Journey, Unknown Lands (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/3/distantjourney.html) by Martha and Lemon Drop
Visiting Alex (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/22/visitingalex.html) by Lady Ra
Something or Other (http://www.852prospect.org/archive/archive/9/somethingor.html) by Martha
Loads and loads of others, too many to list!

Heh. If it makes you feel any better, I would have loved to get involved in fandom before the internet. Sadly, I'd never even heard of conventions until my Buffy days -- clearly I was moving in the wrong circles.

Thanks for the response!

What was your favorite story in that fandom? hhhmmmm..... there were a few that really stuck with me, this one really brought me over into the darkside of slash, and now come to think of it genderf*ck too! *lol* The Left Hand of Madness http://trekiverse.us/author/author.php?aid=A000000096 just scroll down and you'll find it!

What was your first slash fandom? First one I really got totally addicted to was probably Highlander.... mmmmm.... Duncan and Methos
What was the first story you read in that fandom? again.... god only knows.... eons ago!
What was your favorite story in that fandom? that's easy!!!! more like a series that is absolutely epic in scope Rhiannon's Line War (http://rhi.moonlit-eyrie.com/stories/warnings.html#aidanseries) series and all of it's odds and ends.... incredible world building, oc's and fabulous touches of canon. I am horrible for giving feedback but this series made me sit down and write a 1000 word email/fanletter to the author.... but if you want to read it in one sitting I hope you have a few days to spare!

What was your first het fandom? *blushes* I can't believe it took me 5 minutes to remember I was all about the X-files and Mulder and Scully!!!! omg!
What was the first story you read in that fandom? who knows....???? It's been over a decade since I've spent any amount of time in an Xfiles archive (yay Gossamer Project!)

Favorite kissing story? Pretty much anything over on [livejournal.com profile] mcsmooch!
What is your favorite story of all time? (If you can't pick just one, you can do a list, but try to keep it to under five stories)
Oh, dear god.... there's no way I can get it down to just one! but here's a few that at various times have made me laugh, cry, sit in shocked awe, or all of the above (mostly Stargate Atlantis / McShep because that's my current longstanding addiction and OTP.)
Written by the Victors (http://www.trickster.org/speranza/cesper/Victors.html) by Speranza - probably a dozen other people will rec this in this post but it deserves it.
Broken Wings (http://www.kekkai.org/synecdochic/sg1/bw.html) 'verse (SG1 AU Cameron/clone!Jack) by Synecdochic - I re-read this every few months, and every time I'm reminded of just HOW DAMN GOOD it is. The series is still in progress but completely readable and satisfying as is. Oh, the heck with it - read all the Stargate Synecdochic's ever written.
A Beautiful Lifetime Event (http://www.intimations.org/fanfic/stargate/lifetime_event.html) by Astolat - John, Rodney and an Ancient Machine make a baby - everything else comes later.... pure schmoopy fluff *hugs*
Twenty Four Hours with a Rodneysaur (http://rivatar.com/aa/atlantis/rodneysaur.htm) by Moonloon - it's Rodney - as a dinosaur! - with illustrations!!!!!!!!!!
Cate's A Farm in Iowa (http://sheafrotherdon.livejournal.com/80587.html) series.... this is where it begins and if you don't fall in love with her John and Rodney you're made of harder stuff than me.
ok, I give up because I could go on forever.....

A month late, and without links, but I have had no significant internet access :(

What was your first fandom? Harry Potter, natch.
What was the first story you read in that fandom? Dunno... but I started with het, so... first one I really remember of the het ones is Her Draught of Delicate Poison by Subversa, epically long and awesome Snape/Granger Regency style MLC fic.
What was your favorite story in that fandom? Don't ask such things, it is too cruel. Too Wise To Woo Peacably (SS/HP), by McKay, Secrets (HP/DM) by Vorabiza, Draught and RaeWhit. Yes, I can totally name an author because she's that awesome (includes her translations of Lychee's work as well :P)

What was your first slash fandom? Stargate SG-1
What was the first story you read in that fandom? ... Something on Area 52 HKH, first one I can remember from that site is the Mountain series by Lady Arkin, Jack/Daniel AU where Daniel was a bondslave who was raised by Native Americans and Jack purchased him to help track down his family. Lady Arkin's awesome.
What was your favorite story in that fandom? ... Again, this is a cruel cruel question. Best tearjerker: Willamakee (sp? Warning: Death fic). Best xover: Puzzle Pieces, by Lady Ra (Sentinel/SG-1). Best fuzzy-cuddles-and-rainbows-happy-ever-after fic: Rainbow Warrior (I think again by Ra? Don't quote me on it; still has some angst/hc but is described by the author as 'if only things could turn out this way').

What was your first het fandom? HP
What was the first story you read in that fandom? see above
What was your favorite story in that fandom? see above

What was your first gen fandom? Hmm... Not HP/SG-1, I was too pairing-invested for those (gen? boooring). I guess, if solely a gen-interest instead of pairing-interest... none. I'm a soap opera addict.
What was the first story you read in that fandom?
What was your favorite story in that fandom?

What was the first explicit story you read? Oh jeez. I don't even know. I stuck to relatively tame stuff like Pledges by Amireal (HP, SS/HP) for a while. Possibly Fervesco's Mission: Get Hermione Laid series (I stopped reading when she brought Dobby in >.<). Hermione/Severus/Remus/Sirius, with HG/SS and RL/SB sub-pairings.
Favorite kissing story? I'd say a tie between two Amireal fics: Scenes From A Lesser War and Cleave. In the first they only kiss for months as they process changes in them and in Atlantis, and in Cleave they can't touch skin-to-skin so it's the awesomest non-kissing fic ever where they should be kissing all the time.
What is your favorite story of all time? (If you can't pick just one, you can do a list, but try to keep it to under five stories) ummmm..... SGA DADT fic by Amireal, Scenes From A Lesser War. Same author, Where Did All the Physics Go (BEST CROSSOVER EVER), and everything else she's ever written. Rageprufrock, and Astolat.

My link for Too Wise... is broken :(
Secrets by Vorabiza http://thehexfiles.net/viewstory.php?sid=3386

The Mountain's Hail by Lady Arkin (links to first part) http://area52hkh.net/asl/larkin/mohail01.php
Willemakee by Mary Jane. It's a self-indungent fic stabbing a dagger into your heart and I can remember crying buckets.
Puzzle Pieces by Lady Ra http://area52hkh.net/asl/ladyra/puzzlepi.php
Rainbow Warrior by Lady Grey (mis-cited in above post) http://www.sgcsquared.com/slash/rainbow.htm
