Summary:
Brad is moving before he registers the threat, because that's what training does to you, it keeps you alive when you're too stupid to react; when your brain and your senses are still squabbling over the dubious reality of the man who has just appeared out of nowhere in the middle of your kitchen.
Review:
This story fits more on the supernatural side of supernatural/horror theme week here at Epic Recs. Brad is a Marine, stateside, and Nate is a Genie, complete with harem pants. As you can imagine, this story is more on the lighthearted and fun side of the supernatural scale. After Brad finds a magic bottle while out surfing he becomes Nate’s master and is granted three wishes. Brad, being Brad, isn’t going to waste the wishes for money or power or world peace or anything like that, oh no, he has much more important things to wish for like outlawing country music or the power to kill with his mind.
I like the sweetness between Brad and Nate’s interactions. The different ways in which Brad helps Nate experience life outside the bottle and tries to please him or bring a smile to his face in a role reversal of the typical genie/master relationship are enjoyable. The resolution regarding the dilemma of Nate’s imprisonment is nicely dealt with and I like the teasing way the story ends.
