Summary: Sherlock Holmes never expected to live a long life, but he never imagined that it would end like this.

Review: With an inoperable tumor and less than a month to live, Sherlock decides to take matters into his own hands. He wants to leave the world while he can still be the exceptional person that he has always been. This is the story of his death and how John was forced to find a way to survive when everything fell apart.

I've got a soft spot for both death fics and first person narratives and Alone on the Water is a superb example of both tropes. The story is heart-wrenching, the ending inevitable, and John's voice is strong even as Mad_Lori shows him breaking under the pressure of loosing the person who matters most in his life.

The secondary characters are equally well rendered from Sally and Anderson, to Mummy Holmes you really get a taste of the grief they all share.
