Title: Grounded by Lightning
Fandom: Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
Pairing: Qui-Gon Jinn/Obi-Wan Kenobi
Categories: Drama, Romance
Length: Epic
Warnings: sappy Jedis, clueless Jedi Masters, smitten Jedi Apprentices
Author on LJ: n/a
Author Website: In my wildest Dreams
Summary:
Qui-Gon is left by a lover, and Obi-Wan intends to make sure it never happens again.
Review:
Grounded by Lightning was the first piece of fanfiction I read in the Star Wars fandom, this fandom being one of the first I read in my long career of fanfiction reader and writer. I had already seen the movie and even though I had recognized the similarities between the Master and Apprentice relationship and the Japanese version of a Master and his student in the samurai culture, I had not really thought of the romantic side of such a relationship until I stumbled onto the world that is Star Wars (especially The Phantom Menace) fanfiction.
The story starts out with Master Qui-Gon Jinn getting the boot by some cocky knight who thinks that there's more and better out there than the relationship he already has. Suffice to say that Padawan Kenobi, who's been harboring a gigantic crush on his Master decides to take the chance and subtly starts to woo his Master. Well subtly only for Qui-Gon Jinn since everybody else seems to realize rather quickly what is going on and why Obi-Wan is suddenly sticking like glue to his Master.
Wednesday switches POV between Master and Padawan and allows us to see both sides of this courtship, the eager and smitten student who wants nothing more than to be noticed as a possible partner and the clueless and at times a tad confused teacher who slowly comes to realize that his Padawan is actually rather attractive and that said Padawan is secretly lusting after his Master.
The story has a happy end but since the whole plot takes place before Naboo and the events of the first movie, one can only assume that it will not stay that way. Except you are like me and imagine the whole thing taking place in an AU.

Review:
When a dangerous and mysterious foe begins conquering the universe, the Jedi and the Empire of the Sith are faced with the uncomfortable realization that they are going to have to work together to have any hope of stopping the invasion. To that end, Qui-Gon is sent as an emissary and to his surprise he finds that he has far more in common with the Sith royal family than he does with his own Jedi brethren, especially the eldest son and heir to the throne: Obion Kenobi.
Fair warning, the first couple of chapters of this story (before Palpatine is revealed to be a *gasp* Bad Guy (shocker!)) move very slowly and the last chapter moves too fast (and is a little too much like a deus ex machina). Between the two, however, you have an intricate, fascinating, tense thriller populated with an enormous cast of brilliantly drawn (and utterly captivating) OCs and canon characters. I'm especially impressed with the entire Sith royal family, all of whom are (I think) OCs except for Obi-Wan and Anikin. Each one is real and human and not at all Mary Sue-esqe. I also loved Maul, who isn't a bad guy in this fic, and who is far more layered and interesting than he ever was in the movies. Mix in a suspenseful plot in which anyone could prove to be a threat (thanks to Force compulsion) lightened by domestic and romantic drama featuring Qui-Gon and the royal family and you have a long, layered story that will take you hours (or even days) to read.

Obi-Wan's journey from just after puberty to adulthood.
This is such a fascinating, unique story in this fandom. Most Star Wars prequel fics seem to focus entirely on Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon's relationship, romantic or otherwise, or on a specific adventure and very few of them stretch over a significant period of time. This fic, by contrast, spans a decade and is focused on Obi-Wan's personal growth and maturity, from a child who thinks he is a man, to a man who truly is an adult.
The characterizations are fantastic, as is the action. What I really liked most, however, is the way that Obi-Wan learns that love does not equal sex, and vice-versa. It's a subtle lesson that is rarely seen in fic, but an important one that really makes this story work. Combined with Obi-Wan's gradually increasing confidence and maturity and Qui-Gon's steadfast and heartfelt guidance, you have an intriguing and ever evolving relationship.
I will say that the latter half of the story is weighed down by two overly long sex scenes (which, of course, could be a bonus for some folks, but which didn't work for me), but overall the story is a potent, highly satisfying one for anyone interested in a serious look at what love means and whether or not a true, healthy relationship can develop between a teacher and a student.
Apprentice to Journeyman (The story information claims that there is another chapter, but that is incorrect. The story is complete.)

Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are trapped in a cabin by a month-long storm. Their only source of entertainment? A Cosmo-like magazine with a test called 'How Well Do You Know Your Closest Companion?'
I've been reading some fairly heavy fic of late, so I was really happy to stumble across this piece of fluff. The questions are awesome (and very Cosmo-like), the answers are interesting, and the banter is entertaining. Ideal for anyone in need of a light, fluffy story.

Review:
Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are trapped in a cabin by a month-long storm. Their only source of entertainment? A Cosmo-like magazine with a test called 'How Well Do You Know Your Closest Companion?'
I've been reading some fairly heavy fic of late, so I was really happy to stumble across this piece of fluff. The questions are awesome (and very Cosmo-like), the answers are interesting, and the banter is entertaining. Ideal for anyone in need of a light, fluffy story.
