Review: This is a series of two fics, “Replay” and “Numbers” and an added collection of snippets and drabbles set in the same verse that highlight some of the moments we didn’t get to see or that were only hinted at.

The premise is that old man Charles Xavier as we know him from the X-Men movies and with all the knowledge, experience and power of his old self travels back in time, by casting his mind into his younger body. It’s his plan to change all the horrible events that made Magneto the person he is and he does it in the best way he can think of: As he knows Erik has been in love for him for decades now, what’s easier than to give him what he wants?

“Replay” is a delightful and sometimes hilarious fic about old Charles having to come to grips with being young again and with the moral dilemma of using his future knowledge to “take advantage” of Erik. He’s so engrossed in his own dilemma and so very Charles in some of the decisions he makes - like not reading Erik’s mind for the entire fic - that makes the little twist here work. Although the author - or Erik - gives the twist away pretty early on to make even more obvious that Charles can be the king of denial if he wants to, Charles never allows himself to pick up on it. It makes all his interactions with Erik very interesting and all the back and forth and paralleling of the things that happened in the future they left behind and what’s happening in their new past is well thought out and nicely used to describe the sort of people they are.

I think I like the second part, “Numbers” a little better even than “Replay” although it’s really imperative to read them in order and preferably together. “Numbers” is Eriks version of that happened in “Replay” and his voice is appropriately dry and a joy to read. Also his reflections on Charles and his obliviousness are just too funny.

The Opposite of People by kaydeefalls (PG-13)

Author's Summary:
In retrospect, it probably didn't help that the first time Charles met Erik Lehnsherr, the man was up a ladder in well-worn, close-fitting jeans. Modern!nonpowered!AU where they all work in the theatre, Shaw is still a bastard, and Charles is doing his best to get this damn show open with his sanity (relatively) intact.

Review:
An AU fic where Charles is the stage manager and Erik is the technical director and it's glorious. There's a real sense of the theater--I have no idea how theater works, what people do, or how the magic is performed, but this fic gives a very clear glimpse in the lives of the people behind the scenes. I may not know a lick of what goes on, but I do know when something sounds authentic, and this fic has that authentic voice in spades. It's a lot of fun and definitely won't fail to put a smile on your face.

Title: Paralyzer
Fandom: X-Men: First Class
Pairing: Erik Lehnsherr/Charles Xavier
Categories: AU, Drama, Angst, Case File, Mystery, Dark
Length: Epic (43,521 words)
Warnings: Attempted Rape, Child Abuse & Harm, Graphic Depictions Of Violence, Internalized Homophobia, Serial Killer with victims (so character deaths)

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 / [personal profile] yahtzee
Author Website: faviconYahtzee / Yahtzee's website

Author's Summary:
In 1965, Erik Lehnsherr has infiltrated the NYPD for his own purposes -- but his powers make him a brilliant detective. Yet that's not why FBI agent Charles Xavier has sought him out. It's because the mysterious killer they're both trying to find is murdering people like them: other mutants.

Their search for a madman binds them together. Their inner demons may tear them apart. But the greatest danger comes when the killer they're looking for looks back ...

Review:
First off, this story was toe-scrunchingly, hair-curlingly creepy. The parts from the villain's point of view, especially, are like jumping into the deep-end of a Criminal Minds episode. Mind the warnings and avoid if you need to.

That said, it's a truly excellent case fic and an intriguing AU. Set in the same time period as the movies, the two main characters are in law-enforcement and on the trail of a mutant serial killer before people had coined the term. The character voices are excellent, and I really enjoyed their getting to know each other in this different setting. I ached for Erik's internal conflict, and everyone felt like real people with real emotions and motivations. The sections from Charles's point of view are intriguing; I really liked the way Yahtzee expresses and shows his powers. The secondary characters also shine, with Moira particularly badass. The descriptions are vivid and atmospheric, and the story sucks you in.

An excellent dark mystery, if you're in the mood from some gripping suspense and creepy situations.

Length: Long (16,531 + 19,008 words)
Warnings: in part per author's LJ masterpost, graphic violence, kidnapping, slavery, anti-mutant & homophobic bigotry, lots and lots of NPCs dying

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] luchia13
Author Website: faviconluchia / Ultimate Master List of Doom

Author's Summary:
Erik intends to recruit Raven's supposedly amazing, all-powerful older brother. Instead, he finds himself dealing with Charles Xavier, a weak, tweed-addled professor who seems to think powers don't matter nearly as much as personality. Erik's misconceptions are blown apart when Raven goes missing.

[In the sequel,] Charles and Erik, unintentional co-rulers of the newly-formed Independent Sanctuary of Genosha, have a multi-national navy surrounding their island. Charles takes on the UN, leaving Erik to take on fatherhood and a brand new kind of responsibility, and together, they take on the first true enemy of Genosha.

Review:
Erik tries to recruit Raven's brother Charles to the Brotherhood; Charles, not impressed with Erik's ideology, deflects and distracts him and the recruitment mostly turns into a (frequently drunken) vacation for Erik. Erik doesn't much mind, since he's bemused, frustrated, bewildered, intrigued and charmed by Charles at turns. That all changes when they discover Raven has been kidnapped and uncover the horror that is the current (mutant enslaving) government of Genosha. In saving Raven, they also save all the mutants of Genosha and unintentionally end up as leaders of a new nation, and having to defend said nation from anti-mutant bigotry and attacks. This involves Charles going before the United Nations while Erik stays in Genosha to keep an eye on their adoptive kids and visiting delegates from the UN, not all of whom are as they seem.

Despite the somewhat serious sounding description, the stories is also humorous, particularly in characterizations. I really enjoyed the banter between Erik and Charles (and Raven when she was around). The first story is half romantic comedy, half thrilling and disturbing rescue caper, while the second story is part political thriller, part (surprise!) family drama, with a bit of romance and humor thrown in.

Beware, there are some fairly graphic deaths, mostly Erik vs bad guys, that may be disturbing to readers.

The Stuff National Anthems Are Made Of
Title: An absence which could not be more there
Fandom: X-Men: First Class (with teeny tiny Iron Man crossover)
Pairing: Charles/Erik
Categories: AU, Angst, Drama, Romance, Epistolary
Length: Long (18,201 words)
Warnings: difficult breakup, canon character deaths in the past, unpleasant childhood (including implied possible child abuse)

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] aesc
Author Website: faviconaesc

Author's Summary:
He prepared to shift another half-step over to the Current Events section (which would, of course, enrage him) when the teaser positioned by the model's left elbow caught his eye: DATING WHILE TELEPATHIC: WHY I DON'T DO IT.

Review:
In this modern day AU, Erik and Charles have had a messy breakup, primarily due to Erik's (mis)understanding of the way Charles's powers work. When Erik is browsing through a mutant-focused bookstore, he sees an article in a Cosmo-like magazine about telepath's and dating that causes him to revisit his relationship with Charles and why it went wrong.

The emotions feel so real, both Erik's and Charles's. You can see the mistakes Erik made and how both parties, while they loved each other, were at odds. While the story is an AU, it explores the crux of the "beach divorce" scene, where Erik decides he ultimately can't trust Charles with himself. Post-breakup, Erik finding out more about telepaths and how psionic abilities work, as well as realizing why he couldn't deal with that at the time, is an intense ride. While Erik is the PoV character, Charles has an equal presence via flashbacks and in person.

The author makes telepathy seem like a real thing, with sections of the various magazines articles, books, and websites written by and about telepaths inserted into the story. These segments each have a different voice and tone, and conceptualize psionics for both Erik and the reader. Equally interesting are the sections where Erik uses his own abilities, feeling buildings and trains around him and sensing a familiar pen, showing how deeply his experience of the world is filtered through them.

One warning: if you find realistic stories about the emotional difficulties of relationships and bad breakups upsetting, you may want to avoid the story. However, the story does have a happy ending for both Charles and Erik, so the angst has a good payoff.

One warning: if you find realistic stories about the emotional difficulties of relationships, and a bad breakup, you may want to avoid the story. However, the story does have a happy ending for both Charles and Erik, so the angst has a good payoff.

An absence which could not be more there

Summary:
Futurefic, fixit, fluff. In public, Erik and Charles are immensely powerful and charismatic world leaders. In private, they're a pair of stubborn old men.

Review:
Far into an AU future, Charles and Erik are the leaders of the mutant nation of Genosha, held in awe by many and icons in their own time. To their friends and family, they're two grumpy old men, still completely in love, dealing with kids these days (fashion! Erik is an "epic troll"), the hated internet, a nasty bout with the flu and arguments over toothpaste tubes.

The story itself, with vignettes of their day-to-day lives is framed between sections of a retrospective magazine article about their relationship over the years, with a fresh outsider perspective of the AU world the author has constructed.

I love this happy future for Charles and Erik. They're together, they have their families with them, they're some of the most powerful men in the world, they're still themselves...and they're hilarious.
