Summary:
Nate thinks: Not dancing is not living. He doesn’t say it.

Review:
This is a fantastic AU that takes the characters from GK and puts them into the world of televised dance competitions. I have little to no knowledge of the various dance styles used in this fic but thought the author did a great job filling in the details making it ring true and easy to visualize. I liked the structure of the story and the way the sections are interspersed with snippets from montages or interviews. I particularly liked the ending sequence and thought the interview Brad gave and what he revealed vs. didn’t reveal was so true to character.

I thought the author did a fantastic job translating the characters and their personalities into the dance world thus making a highly enjoyable AU story. Ray was still Ray, Rudy was a joy, Poke was fun and Walt was great. I really can’t say enough positive things about this fic because I highly enjoyed all of it and thought it was very well done.

Title: Strange Courtship
Fandom: Generation Kill
Pairing: Brad/Nate
Categories: AU, Romance, Fluff, Royalty, Weddings
Length: Medium (5,070 words)
Warnings: None

Author on LJ: Couldn’t find one - if anyone knows what it is, drop me a comment and I’ll edit
Author Website: Author profile @ AO3

Summary:
In which Brad is a desperately self-sacrificing HRH, Nate is not happy about being blind-sided, Ray wants to kill the Swedish press corps, and Walt is present in the background like a good bodyguard.

Review:
For recs this week I’ve got a pair of GK AU’s that I’ve read over the past few months and greatly enjoyed. The first is Strange Courtship which is an AU that has Nate, working for CNAS post-Iraq, meeting Brad at a conference. It’s a case of mistaken identity right away as Nate doesn’t realize that Brad is the Crown Prince of Sweden.

The fic itself is spare, the chapters short, but there is a wealth of storytelling contained within. I enjoyed the outsider points of view, in addition to those of Brad and Nate when telling their story. I thought the Swedish details were fascinating and particularly enjoyed how the author was able to lift Brad and Ray (and Walt though we don’t see him much) into a different country and culture, yet still retain their unique relationship and core characteristics.

Overall this was a wonderfully enjoyable read that was very well done and entertaining.

Title: The Loyal Opposition
Fandom: Generation Kill/The West Wing
Pairing: Brad/Nate, Sam/Ainsley
Categories: Crossover, Future, Post-canon, Politics
Length: Medium (3,589 words)
Warnings: None

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] alethialia
Author Website: N/A

Summary:
"Brad Colbert, Christ-Killer."

"Ainsley Seaborn, Blond Republican Sex Kitten."

Review:
Anytime American politics take center stage with coverage of debates, conventions, and elections running rampant across the news media, there’s a nostalgic part of me that absolutely craves The West Wing. I came across this fic at the perfect time. It’s a future fic crossover between The West Wing and Generation Kill with both Sam and Nate running for the Democratic ticket. While that premise is awesome in itself the fic actually focuses on their spouses, their unapologetically Republican spouses.

The dialogue is sharp, the banter is delicious and the characterizations are spot-on. This story clocks in less than 4,000 words (which is a tragedy because I’d read 40,000 words of it) and while it may feel short in length it’s not short in scope or storytelling. There are tons of little details I could mention that made me smile and enjoy the fic all the more, but really, the entire piece was terrific from beginning to end.

Summary:
Nate looked exactly like Brad always pictured him: exhausted in the full life-in-a-combat-zone sense of the word.

Review:
As soon as I started reading this fic I knew that unless something crazily unexpected happened midstream, I’d be reccing this fic to others. The author does a great job delivering a story rife with tension from the very beginning. The storytelling is superb, the pacing is wonderful, and the drama is realistic. This story is mature and even and I think the PTSD as well as the support aspect is handled well.

One of the strongest parts of this story was how equal Brad and Nate were. Even though Nate was suffering from PTSD and Brad was his support, they were still equals in the relationship. Brad was the stronger partner through those harrowing first few days when Nate was deep in the weeds, but their roles reversed somewhat as Nate became more cognizant and aware of his own situation to the point that Nate was then able to support Brad and act as a catalyst of change with Brad’s relationship with his parents.

I really enjoyed the picture of familial love in all its messy, glorious, hurtful, and beautiful incarnations. Mr. and Mrs. Colbert, though never seen in person, are fully realized and complete characters through memories, text messages, and phone conversations. Brad’s phone conversation with his parents, towards the end, absolutely made my heart hurt in the very best of ways.

This is a beautiful, mature, hopeful rendering of family, friendship, and romantic partners.

Summary:
It's around when Ray wants to hold Walt's hand like a goddamn teenage girl with stars in her eyes and wet panties that he starts to worry

Review:
This series is made up of fourteen different stories, all dealing with a slice of Ray’s life and his relationship with Walt from the very beginning leading to marriage, honeymoon, family and through to the birth of their grandchild. While I categorize this entire series as a love story, it’s a love story that is true to Ray in all his offensive and clueless bravado and glory. The entire series is from his point of view and the author does such a great job with the consistency and fabulousness of Ray’s voice. I’m in awe of authors who do a great Ray voice, and I’ve read several, but I don’t think I’ve read many that ring as true as this one. Throughout each story the reader, like Walt, can’t help but shake their head at Ray but still find him incredibly endearing at the same time.

Overall this is a light, fun read illustrating with unerring characterization and humor some of the major stages of love and life with a partner.

Instead of linking each of the fourteen individual stories below I included the link to the series page at AO3. It includes links to each individual part complete with summary for that part.
