Review:
How many of you know the children's story The Velveteen Rabbit? Good. And how many of you have put that together with the Winchester brothers and are now hiding under your seats? Clever people.
It turns out that when Halfrek died, she left everything in her will to her best friend, Anya. That includes the contracts for a number of ongoing wishes made by children that Hallie thought needed her special brand of justice.
All these contracts duly passed to Xander on Anya's death. He has no idea what the wishes were or how Hallie granted them, but he has a list of people affected and a deal with D'Hoffryn allowing him to dissolve whichever wishes he thinks were over the top. He has spent months travelling around talking to people who talked to Hallie, undoing some wishes and leaving others. Now he has arrived at Singer Salvage to chat with Sam Winchester about a conversation with his guidance counselor at Stanford, and by now you really should be hiding under your seats.
This is a beautifully written story. Eponine's language flows nicely, showing us clearly the complex flow of emotions that rocket around this story. She has the characters pitch-perfect as well; I can imagine all the dialogue being delivered by the actors as if I was hearing it. That's absolutely essential to a dialogue-heavy character piece like this, and Eponine pulls it off very well. It's just a gorgeously heart-wrenching read that somehow manages to fit the tone of both shows. It's also rounded off just enough to be believable, without hitting the metaphorical reset button at the end. Dean and Sam's relationship is changed in the course of the story, and while calling them OK at the end might be a bit of an overstatement they are at least coping with those changes.
Read it. But maybe hide under your seat first.

Summary:
After an alien attack drags Airman Xander into an battle when he only wants to deliver his peaches, Xander discovers a whole new world, and a new way of seeing the world and himself.
Review:
After Adam is taken down and the Initiative disbanded, Xander falls victim to Spike's mindgames and in a fit of insecurity joins the Air Force. With classic Xander timing he is delivering supplies to the Cheyenne Mountain complex when SGC is hit by invaders with a (ahem) unusual means of distracting the base personnel. In the confusion Xander ends up on entirely the wrong level, shares a closet with Daniel Jackson and eventually gets compos mentis enough to help save the day. And that's more or less chapter one.
As you can probably tell, this is not a "Xander joins the military and kicks ass" story. Xander does very little ass-kicking, although his unorthodox fighting style meets with Teal'c's approval. No, this is a story about people. It's about Jack O'Neill dealing with someone who uses the same tactics of annoyance as he does. It's about Daniel Jackson wrapping his head around the idea that someone who knows bits of Akkadian and Sumerian can be not a linguist. And mostly it's about Xander not being allowed to snark his way out of facing his past.
It's not pretty in places; such things never are. Everyone has their own opinion of the rights and wrongs of situations, and no one is completely correct or completely blameless. This goes double when the action shifts back to Sunnydale as Glory is making her move. The real surprise is Jack and Buffy: I expected to see two determinedly contrary people butting heads, forgetting that neither of them are stupid.
This is a long psychological piece with enough bursts of action and humour (and not too much sex) to keep it fresh. Thoroughly recommended.

Review:
Continuing with my plan to rec "spooky" fics during the month of October, I'm going in a different direction with this one and taking the opportunity to review something darker and more horror-filled than my last offering.
Resurgam has a tense, dark atmosphere from the very beginning. La_Temperanza's language is evocative, making the grisly details seem all too real. Everything is so vivid and well-realized that reading this story is almost like watching a horror movie, in the best possible way.
I really loved the interpretation of Merlin's magic, his role in the spirit world and how he is still "Emrys", but with a vastly different significance. Arthur is also very well characterized; his canon qualities, such as his role as a leader and slightly prattish exterior, translate very well to this setting. There's a really terrific moment related to him that I won't spoil here, but that really sort of makes the whole story for me.
While Resurgam is definitively a horror story, the romance between Arthur and Merlin is charmingly well done. There's nothing like fighting off legions of the dead to bring two people together, after all. There are some small moments of levity that both keep you from being overwhelmed by all the darkness, and they also serve as a sort of contrast to make the more macabre elements seem even more so.

Author's Summary: Xander likes Graham. Graham likes Xander. They live on a Hellmouth. Ergo, things won't be that easy.

Review:
It's hard work reccing my old favourite Buffy stories. Either they've disappeared into the ether, or are hiding behind LJ friends locks, or someone got there first. Fortunately James Walkswithwind (aka Zort) is one of the hardy perennials of fandom, still writing in various different fandoms all these years later.
There aren't that many Xander/Graham stories out there, and this is an absolute delight. It is set very early in an alternate season 4, before the Initiative have been formally introduced to the Slayer. Buffy and Riley are dating, which logically must be how Xander comes to know Graham. Logically. And if there are things about Graham that Xander can't have known that way, it must be his imagination. So Xander falls for Graham, and vice versa, with more than a little help from Willow, Buffy and Riley. And then the fun really starts.
The central twist here has become a bit of a cliche in Buffy crossover fanfic, but it was fresh and new when I met it here. It is well thought out, well carried through, beautifully characterised, and just generally a pleasure to read. Re-reading it for this review, I was struck again by how good it is, even after all this time. So many of the stories I used to love haven't lasted well as my taste has improved, but When We Last Met still has all the wonderful dialogue (and, joy of joys, accurate Anglicisms) that I remembered.
Go. Read.

Author's Summary:
Merlin's life in London is a bit of a mess: his career is trapped somewhere between student and professional, his love life is trapped in a relationship gone sour, and most days he feels physically trapped in the tiny, shared flat he can't afford to move out of—until an unexpected opportunity sends him packing for the coast. There, he meets someone who might be in a even worse fix than he is: Arthur, a Victorian-era sea captain who's trapped, a bit literally, between life and death, and who refuses to leave the house he died in over a hundred years ago.
Review:
Before I start in on the review I want to mention the warning for major character death. I don't normally read stories with major character death, but this one is the exception. The way it is handled in this story is satisfactory even to a Happily Ever After addict such as myself. So without further ado...
How better to begin the month of October than with a ghost story? Gibraltar May Tumble is certainly that -- and a very good one -- but at its heart it is really a love story. Merlin is looking for a fresh start, and he finds one in the charmingly rendered town of Whitecliff. The author gives the town a lovely ambiance that really brings the setting to life to serve as the perfect backdrop for this romance.
The characterizations of Arthur and Merlin are spot on, with delightful banter and just the right amount of that push/pull dynamic that is such an integral part of their relationship. There is an intensity to their feelings for one another that is very engaging; it really draws you in. The author conveys this particularly well in the love scenes, where the depth of feeling Arthur and Merlin have for one another is so clear, and so perfectly hot.
To paraphrase my favorite line in the story (with my apologies to the author): if all I can have is one Merlin ghost story, then I want this one.

Jared and Jensen are in love, have been for most of their lives. There is just one tiny little problem: Jensen is imaginary, and they can only be together in Jared's dreams. How can Jared ever find true love in the real world when his heart belongs to a figment of his imagination?
Review:
This story, written for the 2010 Supernatural/J2 Big Bang, is an excellent example of what I really like about the genre. As an AU I have no issues with it involving characters bearing the names of real people, so I can just sit an enjoy the original story and watch the film in my head.
It is a very original story as well, told with a light touch and a careful doling out of clues as to what's going on. Until the whole story resolves, you are never left with quite enough to be sure that you've guessed right, and even then there are elements that are simply not explained.
Quite apart from that we get to follow Jared through high school and into college, which is a journey all in itself. Jared doesn't have the easiest time coming out at school, though it's made much easier by Chad being utterly awesome. Seriously, this Chad is the best straight friend a gay boy could ask for, not hesitating for a moment to face down the sports teams when they first start to be threatening. Successfully too, since he doesn't scruple to hit them where it hurts.
There are three sequels, fairly epic in length themselves, taking us past college and into real life. Two of them revolve around meeting the parents, with two very differently charged atmospheres bent around by the central weirdness of the story, while the third is a fascinating glimpse into what makes some people react so negatively. Despite throwing in the homophobia warning above, I would heartily recommend reading that one at least (A Fork In The Road) purely to help get some understanding of how reasonable people can be unreasonable.

Review:
Sherlock's a demon, but although he's done some pretty nasty things in his past, he's lived so long that he's bored now. He and Mycroft, "know that nothing they do really matters, in the grand scheme of things. One day there will be a final battle, where Heaven and Hell will compete for their final victory. And it will be a really big deal, they're sure. But until that day comes, both sides are in and will remain in a holding pattern..."
Enter John, who fascinates Sherlock despite the inconvenience of pretending to be human around him. John's surprised that Sherlock believes in God, but what he doesn't know is that there's no faith involved.
There are cases, souls on the line, secrets revealed, and Moriarty's games. Etothepii sets everything in a believable grey area where demons are damned but capable of emotional attachment, and where angels and demons can secretly work together. The relationship between Mycroft and Sherlock is very well done; I love that they rely on one another even as they argue over which side gets whose souls. It's very in character for both of them. Actually, everything about the fusion slots seamlessly into place (though you don't need to have read Good Omens to understand and enjoy). And Sherlock's feelings for John and his trust in him are the heart of the story.

Summary:
A devotedly unreligious man sends his youngest son to a private religious school. If that wasn't suspicious enough, Sam can't get a hold of John or Dean, people are disappearing right and left, and, in the night, something whispers in the silence of the old chapel. Soon enough, Sam discovers that something terrible lingers behind the doors to the sacristy--something that sheds a light on the secret holy mission of the Soldiers of Christ as well what happened to his family so many years ago.
Review:
This has long been a favorite Supernatural fic of mine because of the way the author takes canon and spins it around, presenting another way it could have gone. The story is, at heart, a mystery but there’s a wonderfully suspenseful and utterly creepy feel that is woven throughout the entire story that continues up until the final, horrible, conclusion.
The Sam characterization here is strong and compelling. He’s taken from his family at the height of his teenaged rebellion stage, something we never saw in the series, and swings between believable anger that John sent him away and confusion and hurt when Dean misses Christmases and birthdays. The back and forth feelings of hurt and anger mixed with loneliness and sadness as he misses both Dean and John are poignant and spot on for teenaged Sam. One of my favorite parts was in the final confrontation where everything is going to hell and Sam wants, with an almost visceral feeling, for John to be there to make everything better because no matter their complicated relationship, Sam still believed John could help him.
The inclusion of Gabriel, who is both Trickster and archangel is wonderfully done. I particularly loved all of Gabriel and Sam’s interactions and how much the author pulled canon references into them. There is a brief relationship between the two but it’s after Sam is of age, and while an important part of the story, it is not the focus of it.
The ending is open to some extent, yet it feels like a natural conclusion to the story. You’re definitely left with a strong feeling of “What happens next?” but the story itself is complete. The epilogue is a fabulous outsider POV detailing the horrors of what happened at Hell House and the last few paragraphs are like a punch to the gut, but in the very best way.
There are some instances of minor spelling errors and missing words in a few places. They were enough to note and point out, but other than jarring for a moment, the story itself is well paced and plotted, and I don’t feel they ultimately took away from that.

It should be no suprise that I rec a well thought out and well written vampire story.

There was a sequel planned originally but unfortunately Dhvana stopped writing this pairing before it could be written.
