Review:

Beecher and Keller fantasize about what their lives would’ve been like if they’d met outside of Oz.

This fic is very sad and very sweet. You can tell that Beecher and Keller really love each other as they pine for what could’ve been. Make no mistake, their love is brutal and bitter, but it’s still there, in the end, and this fic really captures that. I really loved the dynamic between Sister Pete and Keller in this fic, she's trying so hard to save Toby from Chris, and Chris will have none of that, matching her blow for blow. There's something deeply unsettling but satisfying about having characters fantasize about each other, and how it can tell so much about the person having the fantasy, when it's done right. And this fic? So done right.

Fantastic

Review:

Tobias Beecher, Vern Schillinger's latest prag and 'pussy bitch' extraordinaire, becomes better acquainted with the newest hack in Oz: Officer Christopher Keller.

[livejournal.com profile] blackchaps has a way of making long, engaging AUs, and Fate Makes A Man is no exception. There's enough prison politics and f*ed-up romance to go around, and the AU is incredibly believable. It would make sense that Chris Keller would make a great prison guard, if he hadn't been a serial killer, and the author pays a good amount of attention to his backstory, making a believable backstory for him, while still retaining his character. What I liked best about this though, aside from the romance, was that [livejournal.com profile] blackchaps pays attention to the other characters too. It's not just about Keller and Beecher falling in love, it's also about prison politics, on both sides of the bars. Keller worries about his job and his connections with the Nazis, and Beecher schemes to break away from Schillinger's clutches by any means necessary, and it's all kind of awesome. The only thing I wasn't quite sold on was the writing itself, it's a little too heavy on the exposition for my tastes, but that's just because I'm super-picky and a little bit of a snob about what I read besides.

Fate Makes A Man
(ETA: there's a malware warning when you go to the page- but the Google Safe Browsing diagnostic says that it's been safe for a while now, so I'd take the warning with a grain of salt.)

Author’s Summary: A story is an abstraction. He wanted something tangible, something he could hold on to.
Review:

A paroled Toby Beecher tries cope with his past through his writing, but it all comes rushing back when a particularly persistent interviewer comes to his doorstep. As they become closer and closer, Toby has to confront the unpleasant memories in Oz held in him, and reveal the truth behind his stories.

This fic is a remix of [livejournal.com profile] geneticallydead’s story Chrysalis, which I recc’d previously on ER (here, if you’re wondering), and it’s amazing. It's a little confusing and hard to keep track of the plot in the beginning, but it picks up later, and things become considerably less muddled. This story's a little grittier and more down-to-earth than its predecessor, but given the context on which this story was written, this is an incredibly poignant and sad story about dealing with tragedy and hardship.

Review:

Since I've watched only one episode of Oz, I'll give you the super-short version of the series, and link you to some more in-depth overviews: Oz is an HBO show, about a maximum-security prison. The writers tried to make the thing as realistic as they could, meaning of course, there's rape, murder, gratuitous drug use, more rape and Nazis. This is considered an edgy show even for a network like HBO, so let ye be warned.
It follows the lives of the inmates and staff of the experimental Cell Block 5, aka 'Emerald City', in Oswald Penitentiary, and in particular, Tobias Beecher, an alcoholic lawyer who mowed down a little girl whilst totally blotto. Toby has it hard, in particular by the fact that he was made a Nazi's 'prag' (read: fucktoy) his first day there. It only gets worse from there folks. Then, through a somewhat convoluted revenge plot, he falls in love with a serial killer named Chris Keller, with whom he is very codependent. That's basically all I know.
If you want a better summary, but don't want to hear about the squicky stuff, [livejournal.com profile] thefourthvine wrote a fandom summary which is pretty awesome. But if you're made of sterner stuff than I, than take a gander at the crack_van fandom overview

Okay, maybe I cheated a little when I decided to make this part of my Dark Themes Week set. Because, in the Oz fandom, even the fluff is dark and brutal. But nonetheless, this is a good fic. It's an AU where Beecher manages to get parole, and he's only sort of coping with it. Of course, then Keller gets his sentence overturned, and makes a beeline to his former 'prison buddy', mad as heck that Beecher "left" him in prison. They resume their relationship, and though they're not quite happy, it's more bearable to be together than to be apart. I really love the poetic narration in this fic, and the addictive, codependent relationship portrayed between the two men. Here's a quote that I think sums it up:

Nobody will ever love him like Keller does, nobody will ever be driven to such passion or violence in his name. Anyone and everyone else will always be pale and faded by comparison, musty bugs pinned to boards next to a hothouse specimen.

In conclusion, though it gets a little melodramatic in places, this is wonderfully, awesomely f*ed-up fic.
