Review: A beautiful little fic where classic stories like little red riding hood have become jobs to be acted out by the people who live in that particular story universe. Only here, each character is kind of terrible at their job. And by terrible I mean they all fail miserably.
Foggy, terrible wolf that he is would rather pick flowers then maul a rabbit and ends up convincing Matt not to hurt him by sharing the pie he made with him. It gets even sweeter after that and descends into chaos yet somehow still manages to lead to happily ever after.
I totally recommend this fandom. I read a lot of fics before I watched the show and thought there was no way the show was as sweet as the fics implied but it totally was. Matt is an adorable wounded duck and Foggy is the bestest friend who has ever been created.

Pairing: Corvo Attano/The Outsider
Categories/Genres: Romance, Fluff, Humor, Courtship
Length: Long (25367 words)

Author on LJ: N/A
Author Website: NeverwinterThistle
Summary:
The Outsider explores the murky seas of human courtship while Corvo watches in bemusement, and in the background Emily draws, Callista takes charge, Piero sulks, and Cecelia accidentally becomes indispensable. There's also a plague, a vase of asparagus, and about a hundred singing whales who randomly showed up in the harbour one evening.
The squid is still wriggling.
Review:
It's funny, that is to say, odd, how love is such an indelible constant of the human condition, and yet the ways and means of achieving it evolve and change with the times. It's also funny, that is to say, amusing, to watch The Outsider try his hand at human-style courtship as defined by a wealthy, entitled male. It's also utterly hilarious to watch Corvo misunderstand at every turn.
Speaking of, Corvo is a delight in this fic. NeverwinterThistle takes a mute player character and, with a wave of the magic author wand, turns him into a real boy with real person thoughts and real person feelings and real person uncertainty in the face of some pretty heavy-handed intentions on The Outsider's part. But NeverwinterThistle never once lets Corvo backslide into the cardboard cut-out most silent protagonists are by their very nature. Instead, Corvo's mood lifts from gritty, grinding paranoia to genuine contentment in a progression that never feels rushed or overdone.
But to be honest, the star of this fic is The Outsider and the vast range of moods NeverwinterThistle is able to portray through Corvo's perspective.

Review: This is a series of two fics, “Replay” and “Numbers” and an added collection of snippets and drabbles set in the same verse that highlight some of the moments we didn’t get to see or that were only hinted at.
The premise is that old man Charles Xavier as we know him from the X-Men movies and with all the knowledge, experience and power of his old self travels back in time, by casting his mind into his younger body. It’s his plan to change all the horrible events that made Magneto the person he is and he does it in the best way he can think of: As he knows Erik has been in love for him for decades now, what’s easier than to give him what he wants?
“Replay” is a delightful and sometimes hilarious fic about old Charles having to come to grips with being young again and with the moral dilemma of using his future knowledge to “take advantage” of Erik. He’s so engrossed in his own dilemma and so very Charles in some of the decisions he makes - like not reading Erik’s mind for the entire fic - that makes the little twist here work. Although the author - or Erik - gives the twist away pretty early on to make even more obvious that Charles can be the king of denial if he wants to, Charles never allows himself to pick up on it. It makes all his interactions with Erik very interesting and all the back and forth and paralleling of the things that happened in the future they left behind and what’s happening in their new past is well thought out and nicely used to describe the sort of people they are.
I think I like the second part, “Numbers” a little better even than “Replay” although it’s really imperative to read them in order and preferably together. “Numbers” is Eriks version of that happened in “Replay” and his voice is appropriately dry and a joy to read. Also his reflections on Charles and his obliviousness are just too funny.

Summary: You make me feel there's a part of me that I want to get back again.
Review: I'll start by quoting the prompt that sparked this vid, as the vidder does: "I have long wanted a vid that explores the creepy, sexualized, intertwined nature of their relationship, right down to the blood-licking in the last season. It would also focus somewhat on the Scorpius that lives in John's head, and how he can never get away from his tormenter, and their twisted relationship." - Prompt from Destina
Considering how overtly sexual the relationship was on-screen, there's not a whole lot of Crichton/Scorpius around. I guess that's because Scorpius is very much not a pretty boy in the conventional sense, but he was a unique and oddly tragic/sympathetic figure, and his enemy/ally(/enemy) relationship with Crichton was fascinating from any angle. This vid plays up the sexual, slash angle and makes as much a meal of the stuff that was on the screen as Scorpius lunching on Crichton's brain matter. (sorry.)
Great vid that captures the performances of the two actors and what they did with this relationship, which started out as interrogator/victim, and ended with the characters living so much in each other's minds and goals. The vid is also very violent and definitely has a non-consensual vibe to it.

Summary: A post-Exodus AU. Helen never happened. Everything else did.
Review: First let’s start with a summary because this does not encompass the glory this fic deserves.
Lex Luthor, caught in an explosion, wakes up and can’t remember anything about his life. There are many people telling him who he is supposed to be but he doesn’t want any of it. The only thing he has to hold onto are stories about his best friend. Martha Kent tells him about how he’s friends with her son and how when her son knows he’s hurt he’ll come back from the city for him. Lex kind of builds up this phantom Clark Kent in his head as perfect. The only good thing in his life to be proud of when all his past sins are being presented at his feet.
After being abducted and almost killed a second time he let’s people think he’s dead and starts his new life. Stuck in a wheelchair he lives at a monastery with the priest that saved him the second time. It’s just the two of them until a green eyed man drops into the mix with the name Jerome Kent and it turns out Lex isn’t the only one trying to run from the past.
This leads to a beautiful moment where Clark becomes jealous of himself. Lex admits he’s still waiting for the boy Martha told him about to find him because she swore he would. Clark justs wants Lex to see him as he is.
There is a whole lot of story here. Lex finds a purpose for himself and I love how it makes me feel justified in believing in Lex. I’ve always felt without the bad influences in his life he would have gone down a completely different road. In this fic he shows Clark how you can be a bit smarter about saving the world then just stopping the bad guys.

A play about parents, children and the passing of time.
Review:
I recall, in high school, learning about European immigrants coming in droves to the United States in the mid-19th century. They were the victims of severe discrimination and racism at the time, and as a person of mixed heritage living in this current era, it shocked me to consider the idea of white people being racist toward other white people. How could such a thing be possible, when in this modern day it seems to be all whites against all non-whites?
Perhaps someday, if we are fortunate, when my children are grown, my grandchildren will come to me, bewildered by the idea that people of color were discriminated against.
But as #kidsthesedays so unsubtly points out, perhaps it will be so because my children's and grandchildren's generations will have found some other group to discriminate against. Perhaps the media's talking heads will have found some new thing to blame for massacres perpetrated by 'troubled' youth. Perhaps fathers will have found some new aspect of their daughter's wardrobe or behavior to be distressed about, or some socially aware young man or woman will defend the rights of extra terrestrials to their xenophobic parent.
Perhaps life will continue on, cycling endlessly through variations of a thousand familiar themes, even after we have evolved beyond the scientific classification of "homo sapiens."
Perhaps that is the best we can hope for.

Review:
This is a wonderful and tender fic. Reading it I wished for it to never end and still it ends in such a fitting, sweet spot that it’s exactly perfect the way it is.
This is essentially a shipping fic for the Peggy/Angie pairing set in an AU where Peggy was Captain America and is woken from the ice into present day New York and meets Angie Martinelli, aspiring actress, lesbian, working at a diner and developing a big crush on her the suddenly alive again childhood hero.
It’s a nice fic and it explains nicely how a British woman ended up being Captain America - a role that had been meant for Steve Rogers initially. It also does a wonderful job of integrating this into the greater MCU by letting Peggy’s adventures in the present follow some of the stages a woken up Steve Rogers also had to go through. All of that is told from Angie’s POV though, who meets Peggy by accident and watches her react to the new life and times, who is worried about her when she’s fighting the good fight and who ends up being very much infatuated with her, amused by some of her old fashioned ideas and who is on the side also trying to cope with life and her unrequited love.
The fic has some very amusing moment, with Angie putting her foot in her mouth when she tries to be suave, with Tony Stark ending up wearing a gay pride rainbow colored Iron Man suit spraying glitter and Peggy understatedly and charmingly dealing with being thrown into our time. The MCU is only the backdrop though, Angie’s life and her blossoming romance with Peggy is at the center and there are some wonderful call-backs to how the two of them met and got to be friends and roommates in the Agent Carter series. And that's what makes this fic so great and so sweet, with all the domestic moments and the dancing around each other and Angi's thoughts about superhero life.

Review: Jayne jerked half upright when the woman snapped her fingers right next to his nose. After that, he saw no point in pretendin’ to be dead.
“Gorram it, woman,” he said as he heaved himself up and squared his shoulders, pretendin’ he had another gun concealed somewheres on his person. “No one ever teach you not to disturb a man when he’s fully armed and restin’?”
She had to tip her head way back to look him in the eye. Her red hair caught the desert sun somethin’ awful nice.
“You’re about three guns short of being fully armed, and you’ve been playing possum so long you’re starting to burn,” she said.
It's been forever since I'd read Firefly and I can't say this is a pairing I'd ever thought of before, but Saffron is my favourite underhanded femme fatale in the 'Verse, so I jumped to read this when I saw it posted in Rare Pair Fest. And it works! It's like these two fit together in a tiny-underhanded-smart-and-sneaky x big-dumb-and-sneaky-with-a-tiny-core-of-decency sort of way.
Jayne's voice recounting it is just perfect, I can hear them so well in this, and the development of the relationship between them... It almost ends up a weird sort of sweet.

Stiles swore he saw a flash of red Peter’s eyes, but it might of have been his brain’s lack of oxygen making him hallucinate. “I’m looking for my soul mate. Christopher Argent. I believe he volunteered to be taken in for questioning.”
An iron fist clenched Stiles' heart. This man was Argent’s—Christopher’s soul mate?
Stiles stared at the Peter’s wrist, examining every detail of Peter's soul mark. Stiles couldn’t find anything different between his and the blond’s.
Stiles lifted his hand and ghosted his fingers along Peter’s forearm.
It was lightning all over again, and Stiles yanked his hand back, only to have it caught in an unbreakable grip.
Frosty blue eyes burrowed into Stiles', and he couldn’t stop himself from gulping. The smirk on Peter’s lips grew as the corner of his mouth quirked higher, and he drew Stiles’ hand close to his face.
Peter’s nostrils flared slightly as he stared at Stiles’ soul mark. He pulled Stiles forward, pressing soft lips to Stiles wrist.
“Now what would your name be?” Peter purred.
[original summary]
Review: I want to start this fic by saying I wanted to find a good Stiles/Peter/Chris fic, and I was surprised to find such a big and awesome one. I love how it has a twist, where the Soulmate trope is not that simple and that the soul marks give an interesting feel to their relationship. The best part of the fic it’s that we get equals amounts of relationship develop and supernatural action.
Basically Chris and Peter are already in a bond, believe they are only soulmates to each other when Stiles stumbles upon them in a very shifty situation. What follows is a mad dash to figure out what it’s going on, with Stiles figuring out the supernatural element in his soulmates and himself. There are two good subplots, one with Kira’s and Scott’s relationship and another with the Alpha Pack. This fic is just the first of a series, and gives a good base to what will develop in the third story, equally as great.
One of my favorite things about this fic is that the author handles so well the age difference; the fic has several points of view on Stiles joining an already established relationship, with older man. We also see through all the series moments of vulnerability on all of them, and Stiles adapting himself not only to a relationship, but to the image his mates present to everyone around him.
I really like their characterization, while the author warns about out of character behavior, I think they gave a great treatment to each character. Peter and Chris are truly amazing portrayed, and only Stiles had for me a little of variance on the more innocent side, less awkward and funny and more insecure and vulnerable.
If you give it a try, do read the other two fics, because they are amazing. The second is very sweet and domestic, and the third one is darker, a case fic where Stiles shines developing his new powers.

Review:
So long story short, MMD is a Japanese dance program that lets you choreograph dances using character models. dexm's video is actually a recreation of another video that uses the same choreography but a different version of the song. (Which makes this rather tenuously a Tiger & Bunny rec.)
As someone who can't understand a lick of Japanese, I find the majority of MMD videos to be briefly interesting, then rather boring. So while I'm certainly no MMD connoisseur, the fact that I can watch this one from start to finish without glazing over is the most poorly framed yet sincere praise I have ever given and will probably ever give. The camera angles constantly draw the eye and dexm introduces new video effects to keep the viewer ooh-ing and ahh-ing right up until the last frame. The color scheme of light and dark greys calls back to the song's original Vocaloid version and its video, but dexm introduces the darker color scheme and the Tiger & Bunny fandom's Dark Tiger to highlight the singer's ambivalence and confusion. Though there may be a great deal that's recycled from previous MMD versions of the song, dexm adapts and improves on the formula in a way that makes their version a must-see.
Visually, it's a delight, and the singer has a great rock and roll type voice that gives the song a certain vibrancy that the Vocaloid version sorely lacks. If you only watch one MMD video in your life, make sure it's this one.

It’s a wonderful adventure story with some nice action and fight scenes (and it’s obvious how much research about gladiators went into those), but even more than this it’s the story of “Antonius”, who very much still is Tony at the heart of it, from privileged childhood to the pit of the arena and his fight against having his freedom and dignity taken from him, making friends (which involves meeting "Avengers" in gladiator guise) and who doesn't give in to circumstances. The romance is a delicious and wonderful cherry on top. The emotional scenes are vibrant and hit me right where it hurt sometimes and the character arcs that unfold in the story alone are making this a worthy read. The angsty themes are running high with this one, which with the themes of slavery and fights to the death in the arena isn’t surprising. But there are also quieter scenes of friendship and blossoming, uncertain romance to balance that out.
And above all it’s just so well written.
As the author points out the fic contains no centaur/human sex, so this doesn’t need a right out bestiality warning. There is the interspecies romance and kissing, though, that not everyone might enjoy. Those who are here for the xenoromance though might be glad to know that the relationship is consummated in a NC-17 sequel fic.

Duke and Nathan end up with some girl parts, but not completely genderswapped, and the fic revolves around the issues of masculinity and sexuality that come out of that. If that's likely to be a problem or potentially triggery in some way, don't go there? There's also a warning for mild mind control, but it doesn't go too far with anything happening consent issues-wise in terms of the main trio. Review: “It’s Haven. Trans hate is the least of our worries...”
Oh, I enjoyed the hell out of this one. Last week I was emailing the link to friends after I read it, so it's still pretty hot off the presses. Yes, there is the odd typo and grammar hiccup, but really, with all the other goodies on offer here, I find myself disinclined to care about those.
I love the stuff that really digs into the questions of sexuality and masculinity and sexual dysfunction and this goes there and then some, as this particular Trouble turns Haven upside-down and Duke and Nathan end up kind of not their usual manly selves. The fic is told from Nathan's point of view, and I love the POV -- getting to watch him angst in his low-key way about all these things, weird sexual situations and hangups and shame, is entirely wonderful. I also love how his senses are used in interesting ways in the smut. :)
The fic is established Audrey/Nathan leading into an Audrey/Duke/Nathan threesome, and while usually I'm more partial to the latter and the Duke/Nathan dynamic, I've seldom loved Audrey and Nathan's relationship more than the way it's presented here. They are so understanding of each other, and such good friends as well as lovers, who talk about all the knotty things and work through the changes that have happened to Nathan's body and how those effect their sexual relationship. And how they make the decision together when it comes to taking Duke on... they are so sweet and down to earth in this.
Anyway, this is just so hot and odd and interesting, with such a good POV, and the issues of gender and questioning sexuality I felt were nicely dealt with.

From the kmm prompt: Arthur has an anonymous blog/lj/twitter where he posts about his life, and Merlin follows it RELIGIOUSLY. Arthur starts posting about how he's stalking this amazingly hot guy...
Review: This story is adorable. When Merlin first meets Arthur it’s when he is insanely drunk so he doesn’t remember a thing. Only Arthur does remember it and want’s to get revenge on Merlin for throwing a drink in his face (even though he deserved it). So Arthur as presenter of a radio show host starts a thing up where he is going to stalk this guy to learn his weaknesses. Only the things he learns and announces gives away his true feelings for the guy.
Merlin however cannot remember ever throwing a drink in someones face and so even though he watches the show religiously, and however much the guy Arthur’s talking about sounds like him he obliviously believes it can never be him as he never did that.
There is a lot of weird behaviour in this and Merlin just accepts it all. The girls dress him up in a girly headband and skirt and he barely even protests so you end up believing how easily he forgives Arthur probably isn’t that hard.
The best thing about this fic is that it has all my favourite things. A secret identity plus lots of pining. Arthur pretends he hates Merlin at first but eventually has to admit what every ones been telling him about how he clearly likes Merlin a lot. Lots and lots of obliviousness on Merlin’s part. Like alot.

Review:
This fic is one of those you aren’t that sure where it will take you; that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good fic - it’s actually great - it just means it’s fic that keeps you on your toes. This fic is part of canon divergence, very clearly stated by the author’s initial notes: Boyd and Erica get back to Derek and the Alpha Pack doesn’t exist. The action starts in the first chapter and then takes us into a path that traces a very different Stiles from canon.
It’s not a fic that concentrates on Scott, Allison, Lydia or any of the other secondary characters. The fic cleary moves in between Stiles’ relationship with his father and his relationship with Derek, as well as a growing friendship with Danny. Scott and Stiles are falling out and it’s not a fic that shows Scott in favorable light, which is refreshing.
Another prominent character is Peter and as the author warns who starts reading, there are undertones and explicit Peter/Stiles, with a delivered Derek/Stiles endgame. I like this, I love Peter/Stiles, and I specially like when Peter encroaches in Derek’s territory to make him wake up. I also love the way Peter cannon and otherwise see the brilliance of Stiles, and this is a essential part of this fic.
This is a Derek/Stiles fic, so the most important part of the plot focus on them trying to be together and passing through the awkwardness of knowing each other, having had life and death situations together, and still not being sure if there are or not feeling, if they can or not trust each other. What makes this a great fic is the fact while Derek and Stiles are struggling to make each other see what they are and how they feel, Peter is trying to make Stiles his own and Stiles is discovering his sexuality.
It’s a good fic to read when you want a mixture of angst and sex, of teenage problems and real issues with the supernatural.

Review:
If you like Sherlock Holmes in literally any of its incarnations, you need to read this. Period. My favorite chapter is Honey and Onions, Both because of the sheer unbelievable hilarity and also the way in which aragonite has Lestrade and Watson recount their story. It's messy and haphazard and incredibly improbable, and yet aragonite shows in The Art of Reports that it's completely true, if heavily abridged. If you need more convincing, I leave you with this delightful snippet:
"It is illegal to perform obstruction in highways, bridges or rivers!" Lestrade paused again to spit filthy water out from the middle of his diatribe. If you feel the need to perform such an activity, you must first file for a permit at your public Police-station!"
For some unfathomable reason, it worked. The steersman blanched; he hurriedly stuffed his revolver into his coat and used both hands to wrench the cabin back to align with the current...

Review: This is a post-Advent Children, post-Dirge of Cerberus fic focused on Tifa and Vincent. Tifa is still running her bar in Edge and generally juggles life and it’s a very, very chaotic night for her when Vincent drops in for a visit and there is some general bonding over past and present and also a long term crush is revealed and leads to… other things. There is some action and implied misogyny and a bit of a revenge subplot that has more attempted violence, but for the most part this is focused on these two characters sharing a few relatively quiet moments, talking about the past and coming together. (And that part is hot.)
The fic sets Tifa’s current life situation and general badassery up by having her deal with a sleezy client in the first scene. She’s mostly just her own private person running a bar now, even if people know who she is and that she used to be part of Avalanche, but she still can hold herself in a fight. So basically this all starts with a fist brawl. The action is well set up and realistic.
The amazing parts of this story are actually the slow-build, and the characterisation. Through the bonding moments it becomes clear how the shared past affected both their lives and their present, even if they are moving into new territory now. There are wonderful characterisation moments when their affection and their character traits shine through in the way they treat each other and talk to each other, Tifa being frank and sometimes putting her foot in her mouth with her assumptions - and Vincent being his quiet self and trying to hide his feeling and not intrude.
The writing is very beautiful, but it’s really the characterisation in this one that makes it one of my favorites.
