One of my favorite alternate timeline story, Equally Cursed and Blessed is based shortly after the world-shattering revelations of 'Empire Strikes Back', wherein a battered and bruised Luke is called upon by the Rebel Alliance for a desperate rescue mission that plunges him into a world of revenge, pain, and desperation until the only person who can save him is his father.

The reason that I enjoy this story so much is fairly simple: it has an excellent father-son dynamic between Luke and Vader. It's not a perfect relationship (obviously) and it doesn't start out auspiciously in the story, despite the fact that Vader "rescues" his son, but it does plant a seed that most of us don't consider. Luke is, after all, still very much a product of his own destiny - well on his way to becoming a powerful Jedi but still young and floundering in the revelation of who his father is - and Vader is much the same (if not in a different way). Even so, they still manage to connect and build bridges, ones that they both desperately needed but didn't realize they wanted until Bespin. This story really does give us an interesting look a what might have been for father and son should one single mission change their destiny together.
