Because some days you just need a dollop of sap with your hurt.

The story begins with Xander being persuaded to join the gang over in England, where Buffy and Co. are united in an attempt to fight another Big Bad. The battle itself is in the background - the meat of the story concerns Xander and Spike (a souled and conscientious Spike) coming to terms with their failed relationship and trying to find a way to reconnect while dealing with their respective emotional wounds. There's quite a bit of dialogue in this one, and I like the way the exact reasons behind the demise of their relationship aren't simply laid bare, but revealed through musings from both characters and in the way they interact within each other's space. There's the inevitable baddie showdown (my main quibble being the fight, when it occurs, ends up almost *too* understated for the amount of build-up), but this is foremost a quiet character piece with a warming ending.
