Review:
Any fan of “Twin Peaks” will tell you it’s impossible to have a favorite character. Every single character is so sinfully well-written complete with neuroses; it’s impossible not to love each of them. But at the top of my list are Albert and Coop. Each of the characters alone is brilliantly written, full of oddities and foibles. Together, though, they are something of absolute beauty.
Generally I’m not a huge fan of pre-canon fic. One of the reasons for this is it generally falls into one of two categories: it’s either so generic it isn’t worth reading or it’s so inherently impossibly wrong it’s not worth reading. This, though, is a fandom where writers have a bit more leeway. Because “Twin Peaks” was such an ensemble piece and because each of the characters is so likely to prevaricate, almost every character’s back story is something of a blank slate.
Nemo_the_Everbeing makes good use of this in “And the Devil Makes Three,” writing a story that’s quite suspenseful and full of the slightly supernatural that the show so excelled at. Both Albert and Cooper are brilliantly in character. I was especially pleased with Albert; it was fantastic to see his stream-of-consciousness juxtaposed with his vitriolic voice.
The other two stories are equally good, falling sometime after the finale of the show. “If It had to Perish Twice” is probably the most suspenseful of the group, and “From What I’ve Tasted of Desire” finally has the boys on the same page. All three stories are a treasure to any Albert Rosenfield fan. Keep an eye out for a cameo by a couple more characters from the show.
