Author's Summary: It's Hikaru's job to make people cry. He doesn't mind, much, until he meets Pavel. Which is when everything changes.

Review:
Cry Baby Cry is more of a character-study rather than a plot-focused story. The storyline is quite simple: research scientist Hikaru meets Pavel during one of his studies and gets a lot more than he signed-up for.

The characters in this story could have been original characters, but I think Sulu and Chekov work very well here. For whatever reason, the Reboot movie has created a large Chekov/Sulu shipper fanbase with almost archetypal Sulu and Chekov characterizations. Sulu has a strong need to save and protect, but more gentle and hesitant than Kirk’s bravado. Chekov may seem young and weak physically, but he’s very intelligent with a hard exterior (due to some sort of childhood trauma) and a tender heart.

Please keep in mind Chekov is quite young in this story. He insists that he is over 18, but Sulu thinks he could be as young as 15. We never really find out, and it was perhaps meant to be that way, like the other horrible things that happened to him when was even younger. I took Chekov to be as old as he was at the beginning of the Reboot movie – if they are old enough to join the military, they are old enough to havesex.
