Summary:
After his mother "retires," Arthur finds himself in need of a new business partner. He gets a bit more than he bargained for with Eames. OR; in which Arthur becomes a real boy.
Review:
I really love this duo of stories, written by two separate authors. The original story, told from Arthur's perspective, shows an interesting version of his genesis. Raised in the business by a cold mother who treats him as a business partner rather than a son, Arthur finds himself at loose ends when his mother decides to move on in a bizarre and self-centered fashion. Deciding he'd rather train an apprentice than join up with another crew, he meticulously researches until he selects a thief and document forger as a "promising candidate." Soon, it becomes an equal partnership with them pulling jobs and living in an odd and companionable domesticity, then trotting the globe and before the story comes full circle.
The second story is a remix/companion piece told from Eames' perspective. It's a great complement to the first, filling out details and nuance from Eames' side, dovetailing perfectly with it's inspiration story; conversations and situations that are glossed over in one are shown in detail in the other, and we see some of Eames' youth to compliment those bits of Arthur's we saw in the first story. There are some gorgeous turns of phrase, like "...Eames wonders when he gave up being lonely and selfish for being happy."
Each story is a lovely character study, with a fascinating back-story laid out for both Arthur and Eames, and together they made an even better tail. There's a bit of humor, some action, slow-burning romance, drama and a touch of angst. Together, they're one of my favorites in the fandom.
