Summary:Today, they'd woken up and Gerard was King of Illyria. Frank hasn't really been a stable boy since he ended up in the archduke's bed, but now Gerard's exile is over and he's king. Frank has to survive court, politics, and scheming nobles to figure out exactly what he is now.

The story starts out when Gerard becomes king and follows the cast through the first rocky year of his rule. Particularly Frank's attempts to find a place for himself in the palace. He's a commoner, a man, the King's lover, and most importantly to the story, the love of Gerard's life. Which means the two of them get to muddle through the trials of finding a heir for Gerard without violating their commitment to each other.
Tabulaxrasa does a great job keeping everyone in character throughout the story. That, plus the humorous way that she presents the situation, and Frank's reaction to it, keeps this story light and fun. Which is a good thing when you're dealing with the issues of historical reactions to some rather uncomfortable situations. Nothing quite like having to knight your lover so that he can stay in the room when you're discussing business. Not to mention the whole national religion issue.
Even if you don't usually read Historical AUs, and have no idea where in the world Illyria was, you should still give this story a try. An introduction the the Kingdom of Illyria as imagined for this story is included as an introduction to the story.

When Steve went to get himself a cup of coffee, he was just trying to avoid doing paperwork for a minute or ten, not looking to change his whole life.
After the mad rush of the holidays and the exhausting transition back to what passes for normal in my life, I was truly delighted to stumble upon this series. Lighthearted and funny, the writing and characterization throughout it is equal parts grin-inducing and realistic to the show, with Steve and Danny playing off each other like the old married couple everyone keeps assuming they are. While I can’t claim this series will appeal to everyone – it might be a tad too fluffy for you die-hard angst fans – it is a great way to pass the time and warm the heart.
