Summary: "Are you the dude that's gonna help Ryan? You're early," the dude says, and then he scrunches his face up in what Spencer grudgingly admits is a fairly adorable smile. His biofeedback system, meanwhile, chirps deep in the extended processor devoted just to monitoring his biorhythms that he's, in this order: A. hungry; B. surprised; and C. in need of an attitude readjustment.
Spencer replies, "uh, yeah? I guess. I'm the maint, anyway," and makes a mental note to reprogram himself.
um, cyborgs and nanotech and revolution, and stuff. and basically no relationships whatsoever, uh.
The way this story came about: in August 2009, V, my girlfriend and I drove to Chicago to see Fall Out Boy and Panic open for Blink at their Chicago date. by the time we drove back we were all really punchy, and somehow V and I started talking about how awesome purple semi trucks were, and clearly how Brendon would be a purple transformer just like optimus prime, but like, a moped. *this* lead somehow into talking about various bands as robots etc., and then we drove past the most improbable strip club on all of I-90, with like, gears stuck to the outside as if they were advertising I don't even know what. then we started joking for several hundred miles what kind of strip club robot brendon would work at. I don't even know, but I'm not at all making that building up.
Review: In a world where people who die, get brought back as cyborgs (if they're lucky enough and atheists and have the right insurance) Spencer is a mantience drone who some how ends up getting hired to work full time at a strip joint for the broken and damaged cyborgs. Run by a still living human who's just a little crazy and wants nothing more than to be a cyborg.
Things just get crazier from their when Spencer ends up getting dragged into the new revolution. Meanwhile Pete is desperately searching for Patrick, whose been taken by the government for their insane experiments in how to make sure that people don't come back from the dead. Zach is trying to run a revolution, after half of the resistance was massacred. Ryan is broken in a way that not even Spencer can fix. And Mikey Way is searching for the brother that was stolen from him, when he's not performing major surgery to replace broken hearts and lungs.
This fic will drag you in, and not let go until the very end. While the plot could have been more organized, its linear enough to follow easily and the slightly dreamy style has its charms. Spencer's POV is solid, though he's much darker than he's usually portrayed that can easily be considered an effect of the world he's living in and the fact that he doesn't even come into the story until years after he died. The story is engaging enough that it's fairly easy to accept anyway.
Even if Bandom isn't one of your usual fandoms I'd recommend giving this story a chance. It could easily stand as an independent novel, since the characters histories are so deeply ingrained into the story itself.
