Review:
As Atlantis finds itself once more isolated in the Pegasus Galaxy, John and Rodney try to build a successful relationship, but fear and misunderstandings don't make this easy.
Despite the fact that there's a fair bit of action and plot, "In This Era of Liberty" is to me at heart a relationship-centric fic. A great part of the issues that crop up deal with Rodney's insecurities, but John's fears are also quite obvious at times. I really enjoyed the way the author dealt with these feelings: there's enough genuine confusion and misunderstandings as to generate a fair amount of angst, but it never feels OOC or contrived. The whole "breaking up for the greater good" trope is used, but rather than irritate me as it does in some stories (where it is used in as melodramatic a fashion as possible), it is written well enough as to become an important part of character development.
All in all, this is a cleverly written, character-driven fic that should please those who like a bit of an angsty road before the inevitable happy ending.
