Title: There’s Your Trouble; Rupert’s Angels
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pairing: various Spike/Xander (Xander/Jesse, Giles/Wesley, Willow/Tara, former Xander/Anya, former alt-Xander/Jesse)
Categories: angst, AU, body swap, humor, supernatural
Length: Long (~36,000 words)
Warnings: discussion of partner betrayal, discussion of homophobia, some Jesse bashing

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] savoytruffle
Author Website: A Master List of My almost exclusively S/X Fics

Review:
Xander wakes up in a different world. A world where he has his own apartment and Jesse’s alive. And Xander’s apparently gay. This means that when alt-Xander wakes up next to Anya in his parents’ basement he doesn’t take it very well.

I am a sucker for body swap fics, and this is the best one out there in the Buffy 'verse. It’s especially neat that SavoyTruffle uses both Xanders’ POVs instead of just restricting herself to the one side.

On the not so positive side, Jesse is made into a jerk in this, not that it’s exactly against canon, but it’s still a bit heavy handed.

It’s really interesting that SavoyTruffle chose not to reveal if their bodies were switched or if it was just their consciousness’s, especially considering the ending. Also, we never find out if alt-Spike is chipped or souled or more along the lines of Season Two Spike. It’s an intriguing choice to make, especially considering the extent to which different people like the different versions of Spike.

The most interesting aspect of this series is ‘the gang’ in the alt-Universe. Wesley and Giles are in a relationship and are Watchers for Buffy, Faith and Cordelia. Which is why the coda is so fantastic. Hilarious and very unique, ‘Rupert’s Angels’ may be the best short story in the Buffy fandom.

Title: The Anatomy of a Fall
Fandom: Bandom
Pairing: Frank/Gerard (pre-Bob/Ray)
Categories: action/adventure, angst, AU, creature, dark, drama, horror, mystery, supernatural
Length: Super Epic (~107,000 words)
Warnings: homophobia, discussion of character death, violence, one of the author’s warnings is a bit misleading, some possible chan (17-year-old Gerard with, depending on how you look at it, 27-year-old Frank)

Review:
When Gerard and his family move to Glen Fell so Mikey can get the medical care he needs, Gerard doesn’t expect to fit in. Of course, he also doesn’t expect to be beat up on his first day of school by a guy with antlers on his truck. In hopes of avoiding any further punching, Gerard decides to hide in the forest until the bullies have left. And that’s where he meets Frank.

Okay, I will admit that the writing in this monster is really fantastic. The characters are perfect. There’s a definite building of suspense. But, if this was the story the author wanted to tell, she could have done it in about half the words she used. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of things that usually are noticeably absent in fic are all present and accounted for in this. The school days are actually talked about. Long periods of time aren’t just skipped over.

The problem with that is I was expecting a far more drawn out ending. The boys’ relationship has some serious problems. And maybe in the perfect world they’d make out okay, but with the way the author left it, it feels a little more likely that Frank will kill Gerard in a homicidal rage than that the two of them will live happily ever after.

On the plus side, though, Gerard’s relationship with both Donna and Mikey is perfect. Ray and Bob are both really awesome as teenagers. Gabe and Pete are just the perfect comic relief. Frank is actually spot-on, considering his situation. This is definitely worth the read, just be prepared to not love the ending if you like the more realistic ones.
