Review:
I freely admit that this series is a guilty pleasure of mine. It's just that good or that “bad”, depending on your point of view, and brings me on a roller coaster ride of emotions every time I peruse it. Which is, if you didn't know, a good thing.
Based on the assumption that the Andromeda was never caught in the event horizon of the black hole but was instead captured by the Nietzscheans, this series features a Commonwealth is quite a bit different than the one it started out as. Harsher, bleaker, and firmly under the control of the Nietzscheans, who routinely fight each other for dominance it's not an easy place to live. Especially for someone like Seamus Harper, whose past is riddled with everything from being experimented on in a lab to being programmed as a pleasure slave for Nietzscheans.
Even so, and before you run away, this series is fascinating; the dynamics of the Nietzschean Commonwealth, the interactions between the characters, and the relationship that grows between Tyr and Harper (and others) is intriguing. I liked it even as much as I hated it, and for that mixture of emotions alone, I think its well worth the read, if not just so you can decide for yourself whether it works for you or not.
