When Rodney is made into the scapegoat at Dreamland Industries for a patent scandal, he does the only thing he can think of, packs everything up and moves into his Uncle Morty’s former cable television studio to have a nice quiet mid-life crisis. He’s getting along with the locals swimmingly when he picks up a distress signal over his giant dish.
This is an insidious little gem. It starts out with some of the best Rodney-babble you’ll see anywhere, establishing his former job as something completely plausible for another possible position Rodney might have had if things had been a bit different. The slow build-up to an out and out horror story is just thrilling.
Now let’s bring up a couple of other reasons why everyone should read this. The OCs in this fic (with the exception of Steve who I’ll mention later) are all taken from “Arsenic and Old Lace” which kicks some serious butt. The truly superb part of this is the fact that the whole 'Brewster' line was barking mad in the movie. Steve and some of the general plot of this fic are actually also a part of whizzy’s other fantastic work, the “Black Helicopters” ‘Verse. If you do happen to read them both you’ll catch quite a different take on the same initial plot. These are great reads that have all of the characters down.

Instead of a soldier, Xander decides to go as a vampire for Halloween. When Ethan’s spell kicks in, it doesn’t just turn Xander into any old vamp. It transforms him into a nine hundred year old vampire of Dracula’s line. When Spike stumbles upon him, Xander decides he’s going to take him as a pet.
The first time I read this was shortly after I’d discovered fanfiction and I found this unrelentingly dark. Now I simply adore the ambiguous morality of this, especially the second part. The dynamics between Xander and Angel are so utterly perfect. Lit-gal is really fantastic at writing Xander and Angel as friends. Also, the way Spike and Angel interact with each other is truly revelatory. The back-story of Xander the vampire is quite fascinating, and the use of Ethan in this could not be more appropriate.
Now we get to the less pretty aspects. Xander’s vamp accent is kind of annoying, more for the cutting in and out-ness of it than for the accent itself. Spike’s accent is really obnoxious, although it’s almost more common for it to be written in this way than not in fandom. Spike and Xander’s relationship is seriously messed up. The over-use of the words childe, sire, and, worst of all, childer, are the most irritating occurrence in fandom. Thank god all of this is combined with good writing and a stellar plot that is truly unique. Though not for the faint of heart, this is a great Halloween read.
