Title: Make The Devil Feel Surprise
Fandom: SGA
Pairing: John/Rodney
Categories: action, angst, AU, drama, romance
Length: epic (48,000)
Warnings: This is a mirror AU and therefore, the characters are dark and angry and, in some cases, more than a little psycho. There is also sex between a minor and an adult, as well as some consent issues and BDSM elements.

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] telesilla
Website: Chez Rozilla

Author's Summary: In a dark mirror universe of our own, sixteen year old Rodney McKay is brought to Atlantis by the Chief Science Officer, his older sister Jeannie, after their parents die. While Jeannie has no real use for Rodney, Colonel Sheppard does. Now Rodney has to come to terms with the fact that not only is he Sheppard's boy toy, but also that Sheppard is a moody, paranoid sadist.

For his part, John isn't quite sure what to make of Rodney, who is an almost too perfect match for him. Just as he and Rodney carefully start to settle into a complicated relationship, a conspiracy begins to surface, forcing Rodney to take a stand.

Review:
I have always wanted to read a good, satisfying mirror-‘verse story in the SGA fandom and this fic is my dream come true.

While John and Rodney in this universe are decidedly different from their canon counterparts, I believe the author was able to capture the essence of these characters and presented them as close to canon as possible given their circumstances. I was willing to overlook the warnings because I very quickly found out Sheppard is not really a “moody, paranoid sadist”. He’s still the same Sheppard who cares deeply about people close to him and believes in doing the “right thing”, albeit with mirror ‘verse standards. AU!Rodney is annoying at times but so is he in canon. My only concern with the story is Jeannie’s characterization. I may even go as far as saying she’s evil, but perhaps she, like all others in that universe, is simply a product of her upbringing and the society she’s in.

The verdict: highly recommended for those who appreciate dark mirror-‘verse stories but still want a happy ending.

So [livejournal.com profile] lothy was kind enough to post on my behalf yesterday, but I ended up sending her the wrong rec (which had already been posted on the 15th). Here's the right one. Sorry about the confusion and thanks to [livejournal.com profile] anikiro for catching the double post!

Title: An Ink-Stained Year.
Fandom: Pride and Prejudice.
Pairing: Colonel Fitzwilliam/Caroline Bingley.
Categories: Post-Canon, Romance, Epistolary.
Length: Long.
Warnings: Oblique references to a miscarriage; chronic illness as a result of a war wound.

Author on LJ: n/a [sixbeforelunch @ Dreamwidth]
Author Website: sixbeforelunch @ Archive of Our Own

Review:
For different reasons, both Caroline Bingley and Richard Fitzwilliam are obliged to remain in London during the summer. The lack of adequate company and entertainment during this time of the year makes them be frequently in each other's company, giving rise to a (in the author's own words) “decidedly un-epic courtship” which is told through a series of letters from the Colonel and Miss Bingley to their respective families.

The P&P fandom usually presents two versions of Miss Bingley: an absolute shrew that resents to the end of her days having lost Darcy to Elizabeth or a young lady victim of the society of her time that eventually comes to recognize the error of her ways and becomes a better, kinder person. While both characterizations can work well, one of the things I loved about "An Ink-Stained Year" is that Caroline is neither perfectly awful nor perfectly good. She has plenty of well documented faults, but also a number of qualities which may not be obvious at first. The same well rounded characterization is granted to Colonel Fitzwilliam, who is neither hero nor rake. Add to these intriguing characters the wonderful way the letters themselves are written (full of personal touches and historical details) and you have a fic which is quite different from what you usually find in the P&P fandom, but most definitely worth reading.
