Review:
After the war, Harry is in a coma. As a result, because there is no one to speak for him, Snape is sentenced to twenty years hard labor. After five years, someone buys him.
First, I have to say it -- slave fic that doesn't include rape! Or even sex! Yay! Honestly, I wish more folks would write slavery as it often is: a hard, brutal life where all focus is spent on survival and usually nothing is left for frivolities like sex.
Based on my previous paragraph, I doubt you'd be surprised to hear that the beginning of this story is very, very grim. I was able to read it twice (I re-read everything at least once before I rec it), however, so it's not as dark as it could have been.
Fortunately, the bulk of the story is not about the slavery, but about the recovery from slavery. Slavery isn't something you just get over in a day or two and Snape's recovery is long and hard and it's obvious he'll never be exactly the same as he once was. At the same time, there's a new life available to him, if he is willing to take the risk.
A thoughtful and thought-provoking story, full of three-dimensional characters who grow and change and learn to hope. A gem.
