A Kiss Before The War by Alara Rogers (PG-13)

  • Aug. 26th, 2009 at 12:13 AM
Title: A Kiss Before The War.
Fandom: Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Pairing: Picard/Q.
Categories: Romance, Post-Series.
Length: Medium.
Warnings: Mentions the events of the Voyager episode “Death Wish” (suicide) and its consequences.

Author on LJ: [profile] alara_works
Author Website: Alara's Happy-Happy Text-Only Site.

Review:
Humanity has passed all the necessary tests and is now free of the Continuum’s interference. When Q appears to give the good news, Picard confesses he would miss the entity if they never saw each other again and ends up saying more about his feelings than he had ever planned to. A surprised Q has a confession of his own to make, while the Civil War within the Continuum looms in the horizon.

A lot of Picard/Q fics tend to descend into mushiness and pages upon pages of declarations of, quite literally, eternal love after the romantic feelings are reciprocated. “A Kiss Before The War” is refreshingly different: there are no declarations of undying love or even too-perfect sex (or even any kind of sex at all). It focuses, instead, on two sentient beings realizing they have feelings for each other (feelings that are stronger than they’ve realized or wanted to admit), but also facing the fact that it’s not yet the right moment to act upon those feelings and that (due to events that they have no control over) that particular moment may never come.

A mixture of funny, poignant and endearing moments, “A Kiss Before The War” is a delightful Picard/Q fic.

Title: Accidental.
Fandom: Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Pairing: Picard/Q.
Categories: Romance.
Length: Short.
Warnings: Temporary character deaths (Q puts everything to rights by the end), implied established relationship.

Review:
Despite the fact that Q considers himself to be a highly evolved being, Picard still manages to surprise him. Of course, surprising a self-proclaimed omnipotent being might have some unintended consequences…

This is a very short snippet, but it’s hands down my absolute favorite Picard/Q fic. Funny, romantic, surprising and spot-on in characterization, it’s really worth reading.

Voice of a Generation by Vamphile (R)

Title: Voice of a Generation
Fandom: Supernatural RPS
Pairing: Jared/Jensen; Chad/Danneel
Categories: AU, angst, drama, humour, romance
Length: long (~30,000)
Warnings: geeky Chad

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] vamphile
Website: Vamphile's Fiction and stuff

Author's Summary: Jared's a recent college grad with a popular blog. Jensen hires him for a 24 hour news network. They like each other. A Lot.

Review:
Jared figures is not all that bad to sleep with his boss. Jensen's hot, and everything is fine as long as Jared reserves the right for sexual harassment lawsuits in case he get fired. Having a boyfriend who is your boss is different problem entirely. Also, while the blog is centred around himself and his views, Jared is not ready to blog about any of this.

Actually, although I can't find fault with this story nor its two main characters, Jared and Jensen, I'm really reccing this for Chad. The Chad in this story is funny, snarky, and gives the best advise ever. All in all, he's just absolutely awesome. I honestly don't know much about the real-life Chad (something about him sleeping with Paris Hilton while still married?), but I really enjoy reading the different version of fanon Chad, sometimes with his douchebag-ness, and other times with his perpetually-stoned wisdom.

Chad and Danneel make a great pair in this story and they together make this light romantic comedy absolutely worth reading.

Title: Souvenirs
Fandom: Star Trek XI
Pairing: Pike/Kirk
Categories: angst, character study, pre-canon, somewhat pwp
Length: medium (~3000)
Warnings: infidelity

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] emiime
Website: n/a

Author's Summary: Pike finds out how very like his father Jim Kirk is—and how he is different.

Review:
A very interesting look at Pike's relationship with the two Kirks, George and Jim, past and present.

Souvenirs is a fairly short piece and therefore does not have a fully developed plot, but what really intrigues me are the things that are not said. This is the sort of story that naturally invites readers to search between the lines, fill in some blanks, and freely explore all the possibilities. Personally, I would love to hear the stories about George Kirk that Pike tells Jim.

The ending is somewhat bittersweet, but I'm still hoping that the author (or someone else) will pick up the 'verse and expand it.
