Review: Smoker is forced by his superiors to hob-nob with the rich at a formal party. His long-suffering Sergeant-Major, who's had some experience with these parties before, goes along. Together, they fight crime and good manners alike.
This is one of those stories that I didn't know I needed to exist in this fandom until I read it. Grumpy, abrasive and common-born Smoker is a perfect foil for the rich OCs that Y St. Ace created. The OCs, while I'm on the subject, are perfect for the setting and for the One Piece series - and how they react to Smoker and Tashigi, both during the party itself and during the melee that ensues when some criminals attack the mansion, is spot-on. (Plus, I love that Tashigi was both practical enough and pessimistic enough to order a dress that would hide both wine and blood stains. She knows that Smoker can't go anywhere without causing a ruckus!) An excellent gen fic - even those unfamiliar with One Piece should be able to slip right into the story.

Title: Space Sickness
Fandom: Star Trek XI

Review: When Sulu gets lost on an alien planet, Chekov gets sick. But is it depression, or something worse?
This fic is Chekov POV only, but it certainly doesn't hold back from delving into the mindsets of the other characters, insofar as Chekov is able to observe them. I really like that this fic posits a Sulu who is reluctant to have sex with his underage boyfriend -- why do so many fanfics overlook this factor? -- but that Chekov's illness turns the ethical dilemma backwards; was it really better, after all, for Sulu to have denied his technically-jailbait but quite mature boyfriend a physical relationship, when they both live in dangerous conditions and one of them could die at any moment? Hollycomb takes her time and lets us wallow in painful regrets along with the separated lovers. There is a happy resolution, never fear, and Hollycomb's flair for beautiful language is at its best when Chekov and Sulu finally decide to take that next step in their relationship. Extra points for concerned!Spock and protective!Kirk.
