Time for another membership drive!

  • Aug. 5th, 2009 at 8:54 AM
I've finally figured out what we're going to do when we hit 1,000 members (yay!)  As most of you know, my middle name is 'Impatient' and so I really want to reach 1,000 members *right now*.  Thus: membership drive!

First, some really cool stats for the comm to date:  We have recced fic in 130 fandoms.  Length-wise, 40% of the fics we rec are over 40,000 words and 75% are over 15,000 words.  While we usually rec slash, 13% of our recs are gen and 9% of our recs are het.  And while we like angst (54%), we also are huge fans of romance (34%), and humor (25%).

Also? We tag for just about everything.  And our memories are sorted by pairing type, so no matter what you're looking for, it's easy to find.

Man, I love this comm:)

The Membership Drive

We've done this once before and had a great time, so I figured we'd use the same general format.  Let me know if you would have any ideas for improvement.

1.  The drive will run to either the end of this Friday or the end of next Friday (and if you have an opinion here, comment to this post -- I'll go with the more popular option).

2.  For every ten new people who follow the comm, I'll post a bonus rec in a new fandom.  The challenge is to make me run out of fandoms:)

3.  Participating is 100% optional -- if you feel inspired to pimp on your own journal or elsewhere, that's great, but do not feel at all pressured to do so.  This is about having fun, folks!

4.  If you do want to pitch in, but aren't feeling particularly eloquent (which is my own problem when trying to pimp), here's some suggested verbage:

Tired of short stories?  Looking for longer fic?  Check out [livejournal.com profile] epic_recs, a multifandom rec comm with a focus on long first-time stories with happy endings.

Current regular fandoms include The Sentinel, Stargate: Atlantis, Harry Potter, due South, Merlin and more, with over 130 fandoms recced in total.

Bent Justice by Kat B. (NC-17)

Title: Bent Justice
Fandom: Buffy
Pairing: Angel/Spike
Categories: AU, angst, drama, hurt/comfort
Length: epic
Warnings: violence, non-con (not the main pairing), dub-con, murder; it's a prison, I'm sure you get the idea

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] toobusy2write
Website: Penetrating Urges

Author's Summary: Spike is an undercover agent sent into prison to bust a corrupt warden, but when he takes on Angel—the convict that runs D Block through strength and fear—in order to prove himself, Spike uncovers more than he bargained for.

Review:
I don't normally go for prison stories because, frankly, prisons really scary me, but Spike is my favourite Buffy character and human!AUs of the Buffy/Angel 'verse simply rock.

There's so much sexual energy between Spike and Angel from the start that you'll probably want to strangle them (from frustration, naturally) or cuddle them (because, yeah, some guys are *dense* and just need to be loved) or perhaps both by the time they actually come around to having sex. Of course, the constant UST-induced bantering between the two doesn't help.

That being said, there's nothing fluffy about Bent Justice. Dude, the story happens prison. There are mentions of rape and extreme violence, but I suppose that's expected of prisons. Not too many people actually get hurt in the story, but do read the warnings before each chapter to make sure there's nothing you can't stomach.

The set-up of the story is fairly straightforward, yet the author does a fabulous job creating a supporting cast with complex but well-developed back-stories, personalities, emotions, and individual motives. Prison does funny things to one's psyche, but it also usually takes an unbalanced psyche for one to land in a maximum security prison. Welcome to Belle Glade Federal Correctional Complex -- the inmates are wonderfully interesting and also very, very dangerous.

A must read if you are a fan of the Buffy/Angel 'verse or have a fondness for prison fics. This is also one of the best undercover stories (including published novels) I've read. Highly recommended.

Pairing: Jim/Blair
Categories: creature, AU, drama, adventure
Length: Very Long (~30,000 words)
Warnings: n/a

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ladyra

Review:
Blair is an elf and his homeland is calling its citizens home. Only problem is, Blair doesn't want to go back. Unfortunately, he might not have a say in the matter.

First, I want to emphasize: this is *not* crack fic.

That said, this is a *great* story with a premise I had never thought of, but which I quite enjoyed. No matter his origins, Blair is still Blair, but now he's a unique individual, in much the same way that Jim is unique. It's an interesting dichotomy and one that made me think long after finishing the story. Mix in a suspensful plot, a gaggle of elves with various motivations, and Simon being exceedingly put upon and you have an engaging romp that is ideal for anyone who is a fan of sci-fi, fantasy, elves, and/or Blair.
