Author’s Summary: Gerard and Mikey have lost their parents, but they've found Brian. (Forever, Now summary)
Review:
This is, hands-down, the best kid!fic I’ve ever read (of the characters-as-kids not the characters-have-kids variety). At the very least, it is certainly my favorite.
The characterization of My Chemical Romance as kids (about junior high age) is amazingly well-done. They actually read like kids – they’re not baby-fied (not a word, I know, but I think you know what I’m getting) or dumb or unrealistically sweet, but they’re not like extra-mature mini-adults either. They’re smart kids, endearing but not idealized, and they still have immature thought processes. The other characters also get plenty of superb characterization as well. Watching Brian develop from fairly typical bachelor to best-dad-ever is absolutely heartwarming, and college-age Panic at the Disco, who get the spotlight in the second story, are also utterly captivating – in fact, this series served as my entry to PatD fanfic. All the characters are simply that endearing in their own right, even without prior knowledge, and considering how big the cast gets by the end of the series, that’s some remarkable writing.
There’s a lot of pairings featured, but in the end, what the series is really all about is family. It’s about making your own family and how it is ties of love not blood that actually bind people together. I know that sounds sappy, but that’s really the best way I can describe it. This is my feel-good fic that makes my smile and squee and even clap hands together in dorky glee every time I reread it.
