Author’s Summary: When one is the male princess of a magical kingdom, few things come as a surprise anymore. Princess Gerard Way of the kingdom of Belleville sets out on a quest to fulfill a prophecy and encounters dragons, climbs mountains, runs from volcanoes, banters with King Peter of Wilmette, and finds true love along the way.
Review:
I love when an author takes a crack-y premise and, instead of using the crack as an excuse for not-so-great writing, actually puts together a well-written story. And I Dream Of What I Need features Princess Gerard as well as some markedly anachronistic dialogue but when I think of the story, the first descriptor that comes to mind is “fairy tale” not “crack.” The writing is excellent, the narrative structure, from the meeting of our heroes to their four-part adventure, is well-planned, the characterization is top-notch, and the magic is lovely.
The author’s summary is a fairly good description of the story so I won’t rehash the details. Suffice it to say, the story is adorable, the fantasy elements read like my old favorite fairy tales, and Gerard and Frank together are simply too cute for words.
