Outcome by Lamardeuse (NC-17)

  • Feb. 12th, 2009 at 3:12 PM
Hello all! Well, since I missed doing bonus recs for the comm hitting 500 (Woohoo!), I've decided to post a few extra recs for our Harlequin theme week. Here's the first one:

Title: Outcome
Author: Lamardeuse
Fandom: Starsky and Hutch
Pairing: Starsky/Hutch
Categories: Post-series, Harlequin, Drama, Attempted Suicide (by OC)
Length: Epic
Warnings: Homophobia, non-physical domestic abuse
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] lamardeuse
Website: when the world is puddle-wonderful

Author’s Summary: After a surprising revelation from Kiko, Starsky and Hutch re-evaluate their relationship.

Review:
This story starts off with a wonderful Harlequin classic: Starsky and Hutch pretend to be a gay couple. It all starts off when Kiko, Hutch’s ‘little brother’ from the Big Brother program, comes out and what’s more, wants advice on how to handle it from Hutch who he assumes is in a relationship with Starsky. Starsky and Hutch end up playing along, not wanting to disrupt Kiko’s fragile acceptance of his own sexuality, and end up making a few realizations along the way.

The story starts out this way, but there’s a lot more to it and it quickly moves beyond that single premise. Set post-series, Starsky and Hutch are now private detectives and in the midst of the Kiko situation, we also get two investigations for plot: a teenage runaway and a famous singer with a verbally and emotionally abusive estranged husband. Add on a peek into Hutch’s unhappy childhood (always a favorite among authors) and you’d think from the description that there’s way too much going on for a single story. Lamardeuse handles all of these plot threads wonderfully though and never lets the reader get lost or confused.

It’s a great story with plenty of romance and plot plus a nice happy-ever-after for the guys who not only end up together, but also get a wonderful unofficial family and the prospect of a long life together in domestic bliss. ^_^

The Drunken Bet Affair by Lady Ra (R)

Title: The Drunken Bet Affair
Author: Lady Ra
Fandom: Man from U.N.C.L.E.
Pairing: Napoleon/Illya
Categories: Harlequin, Humor, Fluff
Length: Long
Warnings/Notes: The 'R' rating is author-given but it's for romance ^_~ It's really more of a PG maybe PG-13
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] ladyra
Website: Visions of Pretty Boys Doing Naughty Things

Author’s Summary: Illya gets very drunk and makes a bet.

Review:
I really was going to rec another MFU author next, but Lady Ra writes such good Harlequin-esque romances that I couldn’t resist. In this story, Illya makes a bet with an OFC (don’t run away! She’s not bad, I promise). Melody, said OFC, figures out that Illya is in (unrequited) love with Napoleon and makes a bet with him that she can get Napoleon for him.

It’s an unapologetic romance of the kind that gives you a warm, gooey, happy feeling. Plus, it features drunk!Illya – rather rare in fanfiction since he’s typically shown as holding his liquor well – and he’s just adorable as well as rather vulnerable (not wussy, though ^_^) In fact, the story is just all-around adorable.

Demarcation by Livia (NC-17)

  • Feb. 12th, 2009 at 3:21 PM
Title: Demarcation
Author: Livia
Fandom: Smallville
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Categories: AU, Future fic, Drama, Harlequin
Length: Long
Warnings: none
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn

Review:
This one pushes my personal definition of Harlequin a little but it does have Clark and Lex working together on a case as the catalyst for getting together… and oh never mind: I liked it, and it’s a romance, so it counts.

Demarcation is an AU wherein Lex never goes evil but he and Clark do drift apart. They haven’t spoken in years, not for lack of caring but simply by neglect, until the two of them end up investigating a case together, throwing them back into each other’s lives. BUT it’s as Lex and Superman. The story even features a gorgeous Superman/Lex sex scene – normally that’s a scenario that discomforts me (often because it feels wrong when the partner wouldn’t normally sleep with Clark-as-Clark), but Livia strikes just the right tone for the scene and it works perfectly.

Plainly put, it’s a happy futurefic where Clark and Lex come together easily (more or less) and naturally. If you’re used to buckets of angst with your Clex, it comes off as a little low-key, but in the best, put-a-little-smile-on-your-face way.

Three Tasks by Syllic (PG-13)

Title:
Three Tasks
Author: Syllic
Fandom: Merlin
Pairing: Merlin/Arthur
Categories: Harlequin, Humor, Fluff
Length: Long
Warnings: none unless you count extreme silliness
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] syllic

Author’s Summary: Arthur is the Royal Arbiter for Suitable Suitors' Disputes. He (and his trusty companion, the golden-dragon-tasselled hat) alone can determine who is fit to woo royal servants and other assorted courtiers in Uther's court.

Review:
The premise is utter crack (but in the very best way): Arthur is in charge of deciding who may court someone in Camelot when there is more than one suitor vying for the same person’s affections. This involves assigning three tasks, judging the competitors, and of course, wearing the official Arbiter’s robes that Arthur will never admit to liking as much as he does (they're lilac!).

I'm sure you can see where this is going from a mile away. Basically, Merlin, in his cluelessness, manages to become the object of four, yes, four suitors’ affections – and Arthur must arbitrate. Could you ask for a better recipe for a Harlequin set-up?

Now you may not believe me, but despite the absurdly crack-y set-up, the story is actually not as crack-y as it first appears. The premise is, true, but the execution is surprisingly thoughtful and sweet, and Arthur in particular is downright adorable.

Funny, fluffy (even Uther manages to not be a bastard), and just gosh-darned sweet. It’s how I like my Harlequin best.
