Second Fiddle by Madison (NC-17)

Not a bonus rec, just a regular one (Though just a heads up that today is the last day for potential bonus recs:)

Title: Second Fiddle
Fandom: Stargate: Atlantis
Pairing: John/Rodney
Categories: Angst, AU
Length: Long
Warnings: n/a

Review:
Quantum mirror fic! In this version of the genre, John comes from a slightly different universe than we're used to and stumbles on a very different Rodney. Quantum McKay has had a crappy life, what with all of his work being theoretical (no Stargate program) and with his caustic personality making it impossible for him to get tenure at the university where he teaches. Unsurprisingly, he wants to go back with John (if they can ever find a way to power the darn device), but how can he convince John?

Usually I'm not a huge fan of quantum-mirror fics, because either one of the universes is deeply unpleasant, or one of the versions of John or Rodney is a jerk, or Sumner is in charge (also a jerk, natch), or for any of a zillion other things that can go wrong when you're playing with two universes instead of one. The two universes in Second Fiddle are not perfect, but neither is either one horrifically awful, which I appreciate. You also have all sorts of lovely angst between John and Rodney and I have to say that I really quite like Quantum Rodney. All and all a good meat and potatoes fanfic.

Paradox by MacGeorge (PG-13)

  • Sep. 26th, 2008 at 9:38 PM
Last membership drive bonus rec! I've decided to end things with an old favorite and a new friend (all wrapped up in one lovely package:)

Title: Paradox
Fandom: Highlander/Torchwood
Pairing: Methos/Jack, Methos/Duncan (implied)
Categories: drama, crossover
Length: medium
Warnings: n/a

Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] macgeorge1
Website: http://www.wordsmiths.net/MacGeorge/

Review:
The Torchwood crew follow massive energy readings to an abandoned warehouse, where they find two dead bodies (one missing a head). Then one of the dead bodies wakes up.

There are a lot of things to like about this fic (especially the 'rescue' by Mac), but my favorite part is the whole issue of immortality. Jack is the only immortal he knows (aside from the Doctor, but that's a whole other mess) and his joy in finding others like him is so bittersweet, especially when he realized that he isn't really like them after all.

Sweet and a little sad, with spot-on characterizations, and a thoughtful, interesting premise. A lovely story.
