Review:
I recced Holding Out for a Hero a while ago, so now it's time to rec the remake (by the original author and her frequent collaborator). Much of Lex's backstory is the same: sexually assaulted by Senatori as a child, pulled from the river in Smallville by Jonathan Kent, decided to break from the Luthor family and become a CSI, and currently living alone and suffering from crippling anxiety, primarily because Lionel is an evil bastard and Lex no longer trusts anyone. However, in this version of the story, Clark is not a CSI. Instead, he's a reporter who happens to be interviewing the Metropolis CSIs for a fluff piece when the Senatori case breaks and much of the story is spent on the case and the resulting fallout.
Despite the fact that this is a much, much longer story than Hero, it's also much more focused. No Nick and Greg, no Whitney jealousy storyline (thank goodness), no other cases to deal with. Just Lex and Clark and a nightmarish past coming to light. Chloe, the Kents, and Lois help (or hinder as the case may be) in Lex's recovery, but the core of the story is Lex and Clark's relationship as it develops from strangers to friends to something more. Overall a fantastic remake that manages to be better than the original.

Length: epic
Warnings: obnoxious formatting means you either have to fiddle with the HTML (and there's a whole other warning there -- literally half of this fic's size comes from completely unnecessary HTML coding. I think she used Word's automated coding, which always results in the absolute worst possible HTML. Grr.) or read this fic in a really big font.

Fair warning, this fic takes a while to get started as our heros try to figure out what's wrong with Ray (and since we know up front that he's been turned into a vampire, it feels like it takes even longer for them to figure it out than it actually does), but once the plot gets going the story flies.
After an argument with Fraser, Ray goes to a bar to get drunk and hopefully laid. He manages both, but the woman who goes down on him in the alley turns right back around and bites the hell out of his neck. The next day, Ray finds himself choking at the smell of garlic, craving red meat, and, oh yeah, accused of biting Stella and then shooting her in the neck (whee!)
I was pleasantly surprised by the complexity of this fic's plot: usually vampire!fic is all about, well, being a vampire. That's a part of this story, of course, but you also have the mystery beind the vampire's identity, her motives, and what she's planning on doing next. The end result is more of a supsense/thriller piece than a horror story, and much the better for it. Couple that with great writing and you have a fantastic story just in time for Halloween.
