RR -- The Sentinel

  • Aug. 13th, 2007 at 12:53 PM
It's Sentinel Week here at Epic Recs, and you know what that means: melodramatic angst and mystical bondings (whee! -- there's a reason this is one of my top two fandoms:)  I'm always looking for good, long Sentinel fic, so if you know of any Sentinel stories I haven't read yet (especially if they aren't archived at 852 Prospect), please let me know.

Things to keep in mind:
-Recced stories can be any length, any fandom, and any pairing, as long as they fit the theme
-You don't need to write a review (unless you want to).  All that you need to include are title, author, and link to the story (all parts if there are more than one).

That said, have at it!

Today's Topic: The Sentinel

Previous Topics:
Genres:
-Marriage of Convenience
-Harleqin AUs
-Homeless!fic
-Humor

Fandoms:
-Long Due South AUs
-Crime Procedurals (anyone posting Bones (Boothe/Bones) or Monk (Stottlemeyer/Disher) fic gets a rec in any fandom of their choice, even if I have to acquaint myself with the fandom first)
-Due South fic (F/V would be a bonus, as I haven't read any before)

Tie a Yellow Ribbon by Gayle (NC-17)

Title: Tie a Yellow Ribbon
Fandom: The Sentinel
Pairing: Jim/Blair
Categories: Episode related, angst
Length: epic
Warnings: none

Author on LJ: n/a?

Review:
Lash is back, or so it seems, and he couldn't have come at a worse time, since Jim and Blair are still trying to trying to get over the whole 'Alex Barnes/Blair drowning/Jim acting like an asshat' fiasco. What I like most about this fic, aside from a lovely mystery (and all of that miscommunication that is the backbone of any angst-ridden fanfic), is that Gayle never forgets that Jim is a sentinel. Even when it would be easier or would help advance the plot to have Jim be oblivious about something he should be able to detect with his senses, Gayle doesn't take the easy way out. It makes for a longer, richer story and I really appreciate the fact that I never have to shout 'Jim! You idiot! Use your senses!' at the computer. Thanks, Gayle!

Just FYI: technically this story is a crossover with The Profiler, but I wouldn't have known that if the author didn't mention it in her notes and, frankly, there's nothing in this fic from the Profiler except a character with a pretty minor role. I think it's best for all involved if you just think of her as an OC and forget the Profiler connection.

Review:
You'll have to give this one a bit of patience, because the first bit is little melodramatic (even for Sentinel standards) and has a few irritating typos. It's worth it, however, because once Jim and Blair get together this story sucks you in and doesn't let you go.

A year or so after the end of the series, Blair is living on the streets (you'll have to read to find out why). One day he runs into Jim at an outdoor cafe, and learns for the first time that Jim's life hasn't gone so great after Blair's departure, what with the bone cancer, and the bombing of his apartment, and the loss of his job. Still, Jim's found a surprising new use for his sentinel talents and he and Blair always do best when they are together...

I really like Jim and Blair in this story. Jim is hanging on by his fingernails, but he's a stubborn bastard and that comes through with every word. Blair isn't doing as well, but every once in a while his exuberance bubbles up and it's delightful to read. Most of all, though, I love the way Jim's senses find a new outlet, one that is both highly original and yet totally plausible. An all-around fascinating premise and an engaging story.
