Review:
The Green Wing special left a lot of plot threads quite literally up in the air; Statham and Joanna were trying to commit suicide, and Mac had married Caroline but was probably dying. Sarren was not the only person to find this a less than satisfactory state of affairs, and here she has conclusively put matters right. Not only that, but she's done so with pitch-perfect character voices and situations that would not have been out of place in the series itself – if, that is, it could have hoped to get away with an explicit three-way sex scene.
Don't look for hearts and flowers – these are not, for the most part, nice people, although almost all of them have some redeeming features. Guy, for example, allows himself to be both honest and vulnerable; Mac admits that he might actually feel something for the man; Caroline owns up to her previous indecision and acknowledges a desire to have her cake and eat it, too …
Meanwhile, Boyce goes to the ends of the Earth to rescue Statham, and in the process is obliged to face up to feelings for the man that he had really hoped did not exist. He has no idea what to do with the knowledge, but at least he is no longer running away from it.
There is even a delightful wrapping-up of the loose ends concerning Queen of Insania Sue White and the perpetual loser Martin Deere, although whether one could honestly call it a happy ending must be open to conjecture.
This is the most satisfactory piece of Green Wing fiction I have found on the Net to date; it resolves all the unresolved storylines and leaves the characters happy – at least for a while – and looking at the future with something resembling optimism. That it does so without sacrificing canon and whilst having the characters act and talk exactly like themselves is an achievement of no small merit. In my opinion, this is the Green Wing fic against which all others will have to be measured in future. It is, as the song says, simply the best.
