Bonus rec!

Review: "Shields down, weapons depleted, enemy closing in – all Jim could do was surrender and pray." Just because things happened one way in one timeline doesn't mean they have to happen the same way the second time around.  This James Kirk has had a much different childhood, and it changed how he approaches relationships.

Anne Higgins has declared that she intends to make a series out of this fic.  That would be great, but this story stands quite well by itself.  In fact, if I were pressed I would have to say that this is my favorite story so far to come out of the Star Trek XI fandom, bar none.  Kirk/McCoy isn't unusual as pairings go, but it seems like Kirk/Spock gets all the attention... and while there are many K/S stories that I would like to recommend, they don't beat Anne's attention to movie canon in No-Win Scenario.  People *are* different than they were in the other timeline, and whether or not Kirk/McCoy is your cup of tea, their relationship makes sense as Anne explains it.  I don't think I should say much more about the plot, other than that it's a beautifully rendered exploration of the behavior of our main characters, both during their time at Starfleet Academy and directly post-movie.  Also, the title may appear to be a non-sequitor until near to the end of the story - and then understanding hits the reader like a hammer to the face.
